Rumor: PS3 Slim to cost UK£ 40 lower than cheapest current PS3, will come in 2 models

PS3 Slim? - Image 1

A Telegraph report has claimed that the long-rumored PS3 Slim is "expected" to cost less than the cheapest current PS3s by around UK£ 40 (about US$ 68) when it hits retail. The same reports also says that the Slim is "likely" to be available in two configurations.

The statements above are unsourced and should be taken with a heap of salt, but for info's sake here's what the Telegraph has to say about the PS3 Slim:

The new console, dubbed the PS3 Slim, is expected to cost less than the current generation of PlayStation 3 consoles, which start at around UK£ 300 (US$ 508) for the 40GB version. The Slim is likely to come in two models, one with a 40GB hard drive, another with an 80GB hard drive, with prices expected to start at around UK£ 260 (US$ 440).

Keep in mind that even if those UK prices turn out to be true, North America will likely have totally different price points -- quite possibly way lower -- owing to the sometimes nonsensical differences in the nature of game and console pricing in the two territories.

The Telegraph also reports that according to DigiTimes, Sony has ordered enough parts to make a million Slims in the third quarter of 2009. This could be further evidence that backs up the existence of the PS3 Slim.

Still, treat this as pure rumor as of now, folks. Lets hope Sony does indeed have something official to say about it at GamesCom later this month.

In the US it will be $50 or $100 off, so 300 or 350. But if it is 40# then it might me $50 off which is not cool. I check this site since they have a lot of rumors, otherwise back to gamestop with $.

Hey, if they drop the price by 50 or 60 dollars, that's enough to buy a new game.

looks like the slim (or whatever its name will be) is really coming but WHY SHOULD SONY MAKE A 40GB SLIM WHEN THEY STOPPED THE 40GB FAT LONG TIME AGO ???

As much as I expect a Slim and a cheaper price point to be coming... I highly doubt Sony will be trimming the HD size. They've constantly added more space cuz of the amount needed for dlc and installs. It'd be foolish to go back to 40gb. 80/160 are good base points. I enjoy my 250gb but thats completely an option.

Am I the only one that's amazed at the fact that telegraphs still exist? Also interesting that the rumored telegraph sources third parties for information, digitimes.

Why not? I would much rather buy the 40gb for $50 or $100 cheaper and spend that money on a 320 or 500GB drive to swap. Unless of course they pull some stuff like add PS2 backwards compatibility to the 80GB or something. But to me bringing back the 40GB to reboot PS3 in the Slim format makes good sense.

I like my fat overpriced PlayStation 3 just the way it is.

Giving it liposuction and a moderate price point just wouldn't be the same... It loses all of it's luster and looks so depressed and flat. Instead of sitting around eating an endless supply of pizza and playing TMNT Turtles in Time Re-Shelled on XBLA, it would be inclined to get up out of it's seat and use Wii Fit on a regular basis and play Wii Sports Resort every few hours after walking the dog outside...

No... I can't bear to watch what Sony will do to it's chubby little console. Sure, it's jealous of it's 2 older brothers and it's cousin who all got makeovers, but not like this, they weren't like this...

Seriously though, if that's really the design, they need to go back to the drawing board. Looks like a black Wii Balance Board. I really have the urge to step on it for some reason...

1. It looks like *****, the package looks like *****, overall, it's *****.

2. Being a computer programmer and hardware junkie for more than these kids around here, this will have a heat issue no matter what they do. PPC CPUs get very hot and this isn't what would let air flow well. The fat does everything, just like my original PS2 fat. No issues, no flimsy construction.
