Rumor: PS3 getting the slim treatment? |

Let's have a bit of a walk down memory lane. The PlayStation, released in 1994, got a redesign in 2000. Likewise, the PlayStation 2, which came out in 1999, got a redesign in 2004. The PSP, first released in Japan in late 2004, got redesigned last year.
That little trip brings us to the PlayStation 3, Sony's newest home video game console. Gadget website T3 has reported that according to "a particularly well-informed insider," Sony is supposedly readying an all-new slimmer and lighter PS3. Rumored release date? This Autumn.
It's not that surprising really. Come on, you expected it to happen. What is interesting though is that this PS3 redesign and the rumored 160GB PS3 could turn out to be one and the same. Of course, Sony's still keeping their "no comment" policy on the whole 160GB PS3 deal, but then they pretty much do that for everything.

Had the author been INFORMED about technology he would have seen that smaller more compact units came about when technology itself shrunk. The PS3 can now be manufactured at 65nm but that's not small enough to make any major design changes.
Once BOTH the cell procs and GPU are 45nm then and only then would a smaller unit be considered.
Another fact which proves it's a fake:
"according to a particularly well-informed insider"
That always spells BS!

for one, i just personally think that sony should first come out with a stable PS3 SKU with solid hardware specs and not phase it out for another version.
the way i see it, there's been an awful lot of changing of specs since the ps3 came out a year ago. kind of makes me feel that maybe sony's doing this whole "testing the waters" thing with the market.
which makes me think, wait, they've had decent sales and all, so why test the waters even further? so maybe that's not it...
unless, of course, this new slimmer model WILL be the solid and stable SKU that sony will continuously manufacture and back up. or as Seoulfood said below, an SKU that could give "that uber-sales peak that all console redesigns seem to bring about."
oh and by the time autumn hits, the ps3 would then have been around 2 years old already. which is about the same timespan that sony released a redesigned psp slim.
yes, there are hardware considerations, but already, sony's made progress with the blu-ray laser. reduced down to 3mm, baby! (which also poses some possibility of cut downs in manufacturing costs) so who's to say that they can't reduce the size of other hardware chips and pieces down to slimmer components in a matter of months?
in that sense, i also have to agree with Eclipze_: "I dont think it'll happen anytime soon but eventually it'll happen."
so... yeah... just my two cents here. whacha think tho? ^_^ but yeah, this slimmer model does pose some pros and cons. and all we can ever do is speculate. for now, at least.

If they actually DO make the slim ps3 I dont think that their going to take away features, if anything they'll add features like they did with the PSP slim. Although since this is a console I think they'll keep the features and just drop the price and add a dual shock 3 and a game or somthing in the mix. All in all I actually think this will be the better bundled up version like the PSP slim.
But really.. I dont care what they do from this point on lol, I already have my 60gb ps3 so thats all I need. I'm just waiting for Mgs4/Mgo ^_^.

One point: If they were parrots they would say it was real, because obviously the "well informed" guy thinks its real (I think it is too because those pictures look pretty real to me).

If you believe that garbage then that's your problem. For the past two weeks anything relating to Sony speculation has been from a "well informed insider". Sony either has a guy on the inside that knows EVERYONE or they have a TON of leaky employees. Neither can possibly be true.

As for my 2 cent - According to the pattern of redesign(exclud ing handhelds), we'll see a slim PS3 after FOUR yrs of original release. (if my algrebra or wotevr is right)

Error - The PS2 didn't come out in 1999. The earliest release was in Japan, which was on March 4th, 2000.

take this instance for example: before, the phasing out of the 20GB model was simply rumor, and then it carried over to EB Games supposedly shutting down their stocks for that certain SKU.

i really like it and if just stinks of quality, i dont like the slimline ps2, coz its too slim and i think the original ps2 and ps3 look nice under the telly, but the slimline ps2 looks a bit tacky!
just my opinion, and speaking of opinion, maybe you guys should lay off ISOHAVEN a bit, as thats what this site is about, at least hes not a 360 troll!!

@Stealth! - I understand news just fine. I take part in MANY news sites and QJ is the absolute worst when it comes to spreading rumors. Most sites look at the FACTS and report as such. QJ just parrots all the BS.
