PlayStation 3 - Image 1Neobara of the GT Forums has decided to throw them (and by offshoot, us) a bone in the form of some insider information pertaining to the details for PS3 Firmware 2.7. According to a friend of his who works in an R&D department at Sony, there are some heavy whoppers coming our way for FW 2.7.

Here are the bits:

Friends List:
  • Voice Messaging is now available as an alternative to text after selecting a user on the friends list. Voice message recordings are capped at 30 seconds.
  • Home Integration: Saved Playstation Home avatar photos can be selected as photo ID for Gamer Card/Friends List.
  • Trophy number and Gamer Level are listed under Friend names for quick reference.
Gamer Card & Trophies:
  • Gamer Card layout has been changed to more closely resemble the Playstation Store aesthetic.
  • Past Trophy information can be viewed in detail by selecting "Recent Trophy History" option.
  • Newly aquired trophies auto-sync in the background
  • Server infrastructure for Trophies has been optimized. Resulting in faster retrieval time for Gamer Card and Trophy information.
In-Game XMB:
  • Loading time for In-Game XMB has been drastically reduced, resulting in a more seemless in-game experience.
  • "Theme settings" options while in-game is now available, allowing custom themes to be applied to the In-Game XMB.
  • Internet Browser can now be accessed while in-game.
  • Voice messaging and voice chat options can be used while in-game.
  • Options that cannot be used in the XMB during game sessions are grayed out (but still selectable) to eliminate user accessibility confusion.
Misc:
  • Other slight UI tweaks and enhancements.
All in all, it's sounding pretty good, don't you think? If this list is as accurate as Neobara claims, then we're definitely in for a freakin' good time. He does, say however, that there are still some very crucial and heavily requested features that are missing. There's still no word on cross-game invites, for one.

Personally, I think the Voice Messaging feature is a good plus. The Internet Browser being accessible while in-game, while some might find it innovative, I don't find that necessary, though. But that's just me. What about you guys?

Oh, and I'll be tagging this as a rumor for now, until we get official word from Sony, or until FW 2.7 pops up on our PS3s. They say it's gonna land sometime Q2 of 2009. *Da-duuunnnn!!!*

» Wow

Sounds pretty sweet. It does sound really awesome but there's still no option to listen to music while in-game which is what I've been waiting for for a long time. =/

Either way though it's awesome!

» Good list: let's hope they're for real

I, for one, think being able to launch the browser while in-game is a great feature, unlike the QJ author. I've often wanted to reference perhaps a game cheat while in the game (especially if I'm having a party). Right now, I have either quit the game, or pull out my laptop to surf for the info.

Obviously, if they do accomplish just ONE of those items, then it HAS to be in-game voice chat/messaging. The rest is all just icing on an already-tasty cake.

» Sounds great

looking forward to this FW!

» hell yeah!!!

this is what im talking about this update is gonna be sweet we still dont have game invites but idc about that. when i had my 360 you could get an invite and when it loads up the game and stuff and takes u off the menu the person could already have joined a game.so all that was a waste....so idc about invites...........BUT HELL YEAH I CANT WAIT TILL THE UPDATE

that update is packed with a lot of stuff but sounds too good to be true.hope its the real deal.

» *Sigh*

You can play music during some games. Its up to the developers to implement it. Microsoft has a patent that prevents Sony from letting us listen to music while we game.

I was thinking the same thing. However, I am not going to be complaining if it's true.

The web-browser being accessed while in game sounds fishy. The option would be great, but as it is the webbrowser runs out of memory...without a game running in the background.

I guess we will see...

Are you serious. There isn't a patent out there that can encompass the scope of what you are saying. It is either a hardware or firmware limitation that limits the music playback.

"Voice messaging and voice chat options can be used while in-game"

I do see the "and voice chat" part, do you?

On all honesty though, I don't see this happening. It really is too good to be true.

» Ok.

"The custom soundtrack patent was submitted well before the release of the 360, presumably with the intention to lock down the feature for the next generation. It wasn%u2019t issued until mid-2006, luckily just before the US/Japan release of the Playstation 3.

The US patent named %u201CMethod and Apparatus for Creating and Playing Soundtracks in a Gaming System%u201D appears to cover any application that allows users to create soundtracks using their own audio tracks, such that they can be played during the execution of the game instead of the game%u2019s default soundtrack."

Like I said, Microsoft wont let Sony let me play my own music unless the developers give me the option to do it FROM the game.

by Twenty-Se7en - 2009-02-18 15:21
» Okay...

The United States sucks. I'm reading the real patent line by line, there is a lot to go through, but it seems ridiculous. What kind of country allows blatant monopolies?

Now when you are clueless at what to do next in the game you can browse for guides. This is one hell of an update no wonder why the other updates weren't that impressive.

by Darkshneider - 2009-02-18 15:28

Midnight Club, like some other games, let you play your music FROM within the game. The developers have to enable the option. I didnt say that you couldnt, all I said was that you could do it FROM the game itself.

Youve just been re-told.

So, I have skimmed most of the patent and is it so very specific, very console specific and not able to transcribe to the ps3. I am definitely going to read more about this. The patent is very much related to the 360 and really doesn't seem to apply to any other system whatsoever.

"The patent is very much related to the 360 and really doesn't seem to apply to any other system whatsoever. "

The concept of a patent seems to be eluding you. Of COURSE it's related to the 360. As a result, the design can't be copied for use in another system. That's what a patent *does*.

by jrsmaster411 - 2009-02-18 15:52

on the sony forums... the person who submitted it is just an attention hog... honestly do u think sony is gonna come out with all of the "dream features" at once? no... i really wish this was true.. but look at reality... all that is gonna happen is everybody that was hyped up for this firmware update is gonna be let down when firmware 2.7 adds video sorting options

If sony was this confident about a list this giant of amazing features all in one firmware they would have announced it already or given us a hint.

On my computer, I can open up Firefox while having a L4D running in the background, so I see no reason why my console can't do the same.

by NarooN - 2009-02-18 17:35
» why not?

The browser itself can run out of memory, but the XMB and Game are separate. I doubt the browser uses actual memory. You'll probably just be able to open less pages and whatnot at a time. Certain games already use the internet browser (like Metal Gear Online, it opens a tad bit slower, but it navigates to pages the same.)

As for the list, it seems likely. Very likely, and if it were a fan-typed wishlist of sorts, you can bet they would have added In-Game Music.

I think its a real list, but it was just re-typed by someone who wanted to save time, as evidenced by the last section "Misc.".

by Dr_Olaf - 2009-02-18 19:20
» Actually...

...people are having LAN- parties, so why shouldn't they have console- parties? There are a lot of multilayer games or even single player games that are fun to play while friends watch then pass the controller, not to mention the huge number of party games like Buzz, Singstar, Rayman raving rabbits, Mario party, the EyeToy series...

God, not everyone who plays video games is a nerd...

» @DVD Sandwich

"On my computer, I can open up Firefox while having a L4D running in the background, so I see no reason why my console can't do the same. "

That's because your PC has more RAM. PS3 games are built to use all the RAM PS3 has. They don't have any to spare for a web browser. G

@Naroon

That's because those games put RAM aside in certain places to use the browser. Note how they don't let you use it when you're actually in the game.

by NarooN - 2009-02-18 20:56
» ...

And like I said, Game and XMB are separate. The in-game XMB doesn't sap out the system's RAM. If you can't use the Browser while in-game, then you shouldn't be able to use in-game XMB period with all the crap it has to load. If voice chat and messaging are available, why not a web browser? All the browser does is simply display web pages, and it'd probably just run slower with a few limited options.

Those games that don't let you use the browser while in-game have it set that way because it'd be practically useless. Even before in-game XMB came, the in-game browser options for said games was still the XMB, not using the actual game's RAM. Same with pre-IGXMB Friends List and such.

As for the Left 4 Dead + Firefox thing, even the slowest computer can technically open both at the same time. By no means would it be

impossible" to run both, even smoothly on a bad rig. Everything would just run slower.

and it seems that, people guessing (not sure if it IS guessing) PS-updates usualy turn out to be partially right,,, unlike that guy who posted a huge list of xbox-updates where only a VERY few got included.... if any.

» hmm...

can u name one ps3 update that people guessed right? i sure cant... every update people get pissed off cause it wasnt what they expected.... EXAMPLE.... in game xmb... after a year and so of asking for it everybody thought it was gonna come out in 2.0... 2.0 passes everybody was really pissed off at the lowzy update (that didnt have ingame)... and then 4 updates later it comes... i wouldnt call that partially right (the update was inevitable, it was just a matter of when)... there are many more examples of this repeating cycle with every update...example.. FW 2.6... if you define "partially right" as guessing what updates will come out by the end of ps3s life span, you would be correct.

im sorry if it sounds like hating, im not tryna... i just dont wanna have every person on the Internet when 2.7 comes out to be blabin at how much of a let down it was and how many systems it broke

not every news-stuff gets presented on QJ..

i think i read those rumoured updates on playstationfan( boy) , com... not sure if it was called that, but it was something with playstation fan...

but why does it matter if what im saiyg is right or wrong, it's not like it changes anything... unlike if i said "UPDATE OUT TOMMROW"... which i don't..

but search google for that playstation-fan-site..

» Sweet list

In-game Internet Browser? Yes please! I can't tell how many times I've wanted a walkthrough running (oh lol) in the background. Especially since I'm about to go Platinum hunting on both Resistance 2, GTA IV and Super Stardust HD.

In game voice chat? Yes please, although I usually don't have a problem with this since the games I want to play have this already. Though, for hooking up together it will be good.

What I want for this update is at least three things:

1. BR and foreign DVDs no longer work when playing them on a CRT TV. It worked swell before 2.60.

2. Ability to access the FULL music menu while internet browsing, playing games and watching photos. The tacky control panel for this on top of the music menu sucks, especially since I have to run through the whole list to get to the top. And mind you, I have A LOT of music on my PS3. I know you can access the control panel by clicking X on the song currently played, but what if I can't find it? Pressing PS will only get me back to the secondary activity - browsing, gaming or photos. I want the FULL menu. I can't even fast forward or reverse tracks for Christ's sakes!

2. And why can't we have a faster skipping function? Even the PSP has the ability to skip at 120x the speed, we have to settle with 4x while HOLDING the button. Imagine you stopped in the middle of a 2 hour podcast - what do you do? Hold the button for two minutes? No thanks.

3. In game XMB is good but not complete. What if I want to change audio settings while ingame? I have hooked up my PS3 to several audio equipments at the same time - I don't want to stop the game to change something.

by Addy771 - 2009-02-19 09:28
» .

Even if we can't directly access the music, if we have the web browser in game it will be possible to playback the music files from within the browser, perhaps with a small JS or flash app. I'm stoked.

good idea for ut3 mods and chating with people not on ps3 like on aim express or something im sure ill find a use for it

by SSJGoku786 - 2009-02-20 20:30
» You can

Pro Evo 2009 allows you to add a custom soundtrack. You create a playlist on your XMB under the music tab and then add your tracks and then you can add the songs to the in game soundtrack and replace the ones already there.

And, on the Sonic Unleashed demo, you can play music from the XMB. Press the PS button, go to the music tab and select your song.

Two different examples on being able to play custom music through the game and through the XMB.

So, doesn't this mean it is possible to do it?

by Darkshneider - 2009-02-22 07:00
» Whoah..

am I not being clear enough? The reason why you cant play your music in all games is because of the patent Microsoft has. There are some games that let you play your music, but the developers had to enable it for it to work. The reason why Midnight Club, Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD, Street Fighter 4 and a lot of other games let you do this is because developers enabled the feature on those games. The feature has been there for a long time its just that companies didnt use it.

by IIVIIOJICA - 2009-02-22 09:36

if that update is coming out in the 2 quarter then that means anywhere from April-June so I think the update is going to be 3.00 for a big update like that.

by SSJGoku786 - 2009-02-23 08:58
» Point of patent?

So, what would be the point of Microsoft's patent if developers could just turn on the feature to play music?

I thought you were stating that the patent blocks the ability to play music through the XMB. But, if it can be done anyway, then the patent is just useless, isn't it?

sony should fix the hdmi issues, the one that blinks and no sounds.

my benq wuxga lcd was perfect for ps3 until they updated the firmware and messed up my ps3/lcd combo. lots of people are affected, even Popular mechanics made a pathetic solution that makes us remove and reinsert the hdmi cable which will damage the hdmi port in the long run, not to mention the inconvenience.
