Could it be? Well according to reports from a certain Japanese tech site, it looks like Sony has already nailed down the release date of the highly anticipated PS3 firmware update that will support 3D gaming.

As spotted by the guys at NeoGAF, Sony is reportedly looking for a June 10 release of the said firmware that will also include game re-releases to support the 3D update. Games such as LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2 and Super Stardust HD are expected to be included in the list,  with many more titles to come.

Nice. I also hear that this week, a couple 3D televisions are being released. I wonder if they are all going to use the same standard for compatibility.

and your tinfoil hat stops the government from reading your thoughts.

I cant wait for this but Im guessing Im gonna have to..No money.

I did read earlier that sony unveiled and priced some 3d tvs in India. I googled the conversion from indian rupees and the cheapest came in around the 700 euro mark and the most expensive one was about 1,550 euro. The article gave no info on the sizes and I have no idea wether the info was accurate or if sony would charge the same over here as they would over there.

Just though I'd mention it

Do you have to have the 3D TV to make it work? I thought the TV was just turn 2D images into 3D, and the PS3 firmware was to do the same, but for games. I didn't know you needed both for the 3D to work.

I'm hoping that this FW (or which ever one is next) includes a patch to prevent any more LeapYear bugs (like in 2 years forgetting that it is a leap year). Not sure where the bug was (accidentally being every 2 years instead of 4, or somehow shifted 2 years out of sync).

About the 3D... gotta wait to save money for a 3D capable TV (and hopefully at the same time prices to come down).

A little off topic, but I'm wondering if the way the TV talks to the glasses to keep them in sync is standardized. If so I can see a viable 3rd party market for "Designer" 3D glasses.

Did I miss something? I thought the PS3 3D thing had the red/blue glasses support (or whatever color), so you could at least use it that way.

I know that's not ideal and screws a quite a bit with colors, but I'm pretty sure it's just as easy to implement and can be used on any TV anywhere.

the 3D that works on even the standard televisions is called anaglyph, which is blue/red glasses. todays 3D is enhanced and it isnt red/blue colours, its more like 2 pictures instead of 1, but runs at the speed of 100hz. thats why the new 3D televisions are above 100hz, the ones we have now are just 60hz. so yea u do need the 3D tv for all this to work.

# Still didn't answer my question.ShinseiTom 2010-03-11 12:30
I thought this was originally shown off with anaglyph glasses. I'm pretty sure I watched a video where the games was cut into two red/blue images. So have they said it isn't going to be available at all, or is everyone just going 3D TV crazy?

And it's not really "enhanced" an any way other than color. That's pretty much the only thing that gets better between the two. I'd rather have anaglyph now that doesn't cost ANYTHING than have to pay loads of money or wait a long time for prices to come down to get this new "enhanced" 3D.

If your confused about how the 3D TV thing is gonna work its like this. Instead of read and blue they use Vertical and Horizontal so the colors aren't skewed. And the TV needed is to support displaying 2 different images(vertical /horizontal) simultaneously at 60 fps which is no small feat especially when its in HD

well i recently got a replacement samsung Plasma Screen.. series 4 so the cheapest model they have.42 in Hd . all the usual stuff. However in the menu there is a 3D option but it is greyed out. maybe you need a 3D device installed?, PS3 i hope.anyway. the screen is 100Hz. which is apparently that is u need just depends if they open the option up or not. i wonder if sony will let the tech work on any screens too. not just Bravia X series/ hrmm..

anyway way I'm excited this tech should be awesome with GT5! hope it work with my screen , cant afford another one

# this is nonsenseGuest 2010-03-11 01:09
This is nonsense, read about 3d tv and 3d bluray players and you will learn they require the NEW HDMI 1.4

Unless Sony pulls some firmware miracle plus couples the ethernet jack to compensate for the less than adequate bandwidth HDMI 1.3 entails, the 3D they are talking about is not the same as the new tv, projectors you've been hearing about.

Go to HDMI.ORG for more info.

Yeh, But having said all that. Not any standard TVs (CRT, LCDs or Plasmas) will work. All have to be upgraded to the 120Hz range. So, its all going to cost a little more money for each and every consumer.

They need to impliment anaglyph 3d also. Yes it is easy to do and only requires slight modification to work. So the people saying you must have 3d tv talk rubbish. Working in 3d for years means I know how easy it is for anaglyph to work on ps3 or any console. Nvidia do 3d in anaglyph or any other 3d output like field sequential or polorized. If you have nvidia card just download the 3d drivers to see yourself. It works great in anaglyph with red blue glasses. So it is bull they can`t use anaglyph in ps3. If they don't then that is just sony trying to rip lots of people off. But even if 3d is not released with anaglyph from the start it will be added in later firmware updates.
