Rumor: PS2, Dreamcast, Japanese import titles on PSN; bundles for Valkyria Chronicles 2, Phantasy Star Portable 2

Sony PlayStation 2 - Image 1

Imagine having the whole PS2 catalog available for download over PSN. Here's another: Imagine Dreamcast originals available alongside it.

There's a supposedly leaked document going around that contains the minutes of an August 5 meeting between Sega and Sony. The two things mention above were just two of the most interesting topics covered in the meeting.

Another thing that sounds very promising is a special Japanese Import Section that would feature Japanese games. The price points for these are still tentative but the notes mention something in the range of US$ 9.99 to US$ 39.99 for full games.

Speaking of imports, the Yakuza series was also talked about during the meeting. The notes seem a bit fishy on this one instance, however, as it mentions that Sony is interested in helping to market the game "if they can have period of exclusivity." Why would Sony still ask for exclusivity when the whole series has only been on PlayStations?

A possible PSP bundle for something called "Valkyria 1937" was also mentioned. An internal name for Valkyria Chronicles 2, maybe? What seems more concrete is that Phantasy Star Portable 2 will be getting a US release, as the minutes mention a GameStop bundle that could be done for the UMD release and the PSP Go.

Anyway. The notes were spotted on Sega of America's FTP site but have been subsequently pulled. You can check out the NeoGAF thread sourced below for the full minutes.

Damn i'd happily kill for the entire Dreamcast back catalogue on my Psp, i don't own a Ps3 and already have a pc Dreamcast emulator so really don't care about that, but port Sonic Adventure, Ikaruga, Jet set radio etc to Psp and it would make my decade.

Man. If this rumor turns out to be everything but a lie. Sony has me sold for ages. If that's the case it looks like Sony's learning what would interest the gamers. I mean a Dreamcast downloadble section? Epicly awesome. Probably has to relate to something about the fact that the Playstation was the one to take the Dreamcast's place. If anyone saw the videos on Gametrailers you'll know what I'm talking about.

Put Street Fighter III (for completions sake if nothing else since the PS3 has versions of most other SF games) and Bangai-O onto the PS3/PSP and that'll be me set. Only games I really enjoyed on that console.

Don't mean to burst your bubble or anythang, but the DC games wouldn't work on the psp. The psp would need to be a least 10 times stronger in order to run DC games at full speed and the psp isn't even stronger than 1 DC. Interesting news to say the least. Lets hope its true.

I'm not talking about emulating the games mate, that's why i said i wish they'd port them over and with Psp's reduced resolution and less need for textures etc it might just about manage it, if by some miracle the Psp go is successful Sega hopefully would port some of them.

One problem, though: PS2 controllers have more buttons. Adding PS2 games wouldn't be very easy unless they change it to work for the PSP.

Very excited if the Dreamcast rumor is true. I'd love to play Cannon Spike, Power Stone 1+2 (And yes, i have the PSP version), Shenmue, Project Justice, the list goes on !! :D As for the PS2 thing, i'd rather see "universal" BC first before any DLC. Grant it, i have a 60 gig unit; however, i want to play my legally purchased PS1 and PS2 imports on it.

The PS2 is slightly more powerful than the PSP so I don't think they would go that route. PS2 on the PS3 however, is probably what they intend. Dreamcast games on the PS3 is an awesome idea! I hope the games can be upscaled in 1080p. I hope Sega also considers doing the same with the Genesis and Master System. Also I would like to see Turbo Grafx 16, and arcade games too just like the Wii has.

Upscalable. That was the whole problem with the Emotion Engine in the older PS2s. If Sony really wants this to work, make "emulated" PS2 playback with universal options that actually work. The simple options that the PS3 gives us are okay but maybe a bit more would be better and the upscaler just has to be efficient. No more jaggedy games. Lol. This would give everyone PS2 playback also which would be awesome. I tried out a PS2 emulator for PC and it does a great job at upscaling to HD resolutions. I'm sure the PS3 can do the same.
