Rumor: Lair controls improved after PS3 1.92 FW update

Even after keeping an eye on the changes Sony's PS3 Firmware 1.92 brought about, we may have missed something. Rumor has it that recently launched game Lair by Factor 5 received tweaks in the control department that fixed most problems gamers had.

One of the biggest complaints about Lair is how making tight turns is close to impossible. Not only were gamers forced to use SIXAXIS, but they were also deprived of precision that a lot of gamers argue should be in a dragon-flight simulator. However, a video posted on YouTube shows Lair with tighter controls supposedly after the firmware update.

As you would see, the person playing is able to do small movements without the dragon making wide turns like it usually does. The controller used to play the game is on screen, making it clear that there's only a small delay between SIXAXIS movements and the dragon's.

As Kotaku, Joystiq and others are pointing out, we’ve released a minor firmware update (version 1.92) for the PS3. This update focuses on some PS3 compatibility and playability issues for select titles..............

So.. maybe this rumor is true for what the blog says... and after release of Lair is when the update comes.. I hope is true... maybe everyone need to re-review the scores...

Very nice game, I was surprised it was released early bec I wasn't planning on getting it at the time. When I went to EB for Warhawk they asked if I wanted Lair too. I thought he was kidding.

# Scores were not just based on the terrible controlsGuest 2007-09-04 21:52
The scores were also based on the gameplay and a Joypad tweak aint going to change their minds, and of course games are never rescored after updates or every game would have to be rescored every time an update was released.

Look at the Gears of war the new maps are outstanding but you cant expect the reviewers to re review Gears and up the score by another 1 or so because of that can you ?..

The controls are not terrible. You just need to get used to using the motion sensor. They made the game the way it is on purpose to be as real as possible. It controls just fine and for me it is already second nature just like how the analog sticks are after getting used to it.

I hated the game, but thats me. I rented it on game fly. Played it for a bout 3 hours, very frustrating indeed to make turns. But thats not why I hated it, its cause the actually gameplay is pretty boring. "destroy the ships that are shooting the city!". Maybe its cause I had super high hopes for this game and it turned out to be average in every area. Atleast Warhawk is freaken awesome!

I was never sure whether I wanted the game or not and after the review I really got turned off to it but if they really fixed the controls on it I might just give it a try.

I got this game the day it was released and that video shows exactly how it has always been. It controled fine from the start. To turn sharper, you have to use the brakes, it's called physics.

# Yeah, I dunno.Guest 2007-09-05 02:33
Having played Lair, I don't know if the above YouTube video showcases ANY tweaks at all to the controls. I was able to control the dragon to the same degree as the video, pre-1.92.

That being said, I still frigging hate the controls. I'd much rather go and replay Ikaruga then spend another minute with Lair.

# I havn't plyed it yet but for some reason I'm more incilned to believe the people that say that you just have to get used to the controlsGuest 2007-09-05 02:55
I mean it's something completely different from the way that we are used to playing games and I bet that after playing your whole life with an analog stick it would be difficult to play with the Sixaxis. It took me a while to change from using the digital pad to the analog stick for racing games, I would always over do it and hit a wall, I'm willing to bet it's the same way here people are either over doing it or under doing it. Anyhoot, I'll try to rent it and judge for myself before making my decision.

# everthing has to changeGuest 2007-09-05 04:49
Everything has to change sooner or later, why dont you say that for going from d-pad to analog sticks, or from joystick to d-pad. This is just the new way to play it, Lair might be the first game to use motion control in a different way, sooner or later more games will come out and ppl will start getting used to it and the bad reviews will stop. And you shouldn't base your self on what a website thinks.

# The bad reviews are not due to motion controlGuest 2007-09-05 05:28
Lair is getting bad reviews because of the game itself! But like all games, once reviewers (and us gamers) don't like it, we start listing all the things we don't like, even if it seems like nit-picking. For Lair, the control is one of the common things that people don't like, and so that's one of the issues that keeps being mentioned.

If Lair was an absolutely fantastic game, then many of those who don't like the controls would make more effort to master it, because they would WANT to do so to get the most out of the game. But if you just don't like a game, then you're not going to bother, and this is what has happened to Lair.

# ReviewsGuest 2007-09-05 06:12
I refuse to believe everyone shares the opinions of the whiners that played it for an hour or the reviewers. A quick look on IGN's reader reviews shows the game getting about 3 full points (of ten) higher than the review; all written by people that have gotten quite far or beaten the game.

This isn't the first time a PS3 game's gotten much worse reviews than actual players think it deserves, however.

Rub-a-dub, also based on otion controls, only got a 3; I think many reviews just don't have the passion to learn a new control scheme, since they've playe 400 games that use analog.

It's no different than gamers giving a lower score to a high scoring game.

If a hyped game get's fantastic reviews, it will attract gamers who think it's overhyped and they will score the game lower. If a hyped game get's a low score, then it's going to attract gamers who disagree and will therefore score it higher. Also, if the game is highly anticipated, it will attract fanboys on both sides, where those supporting the game will give it higher marks than it deserves and those against it giving it lower marks than it deserves. Therefore you can never trust user scores under these circumstances.

Note: Lair got 6.7 on average from IGN readers, compared to 4.9 in the review, which is 1.8 points higher, not about 3 as you claim.

As for Rub-a-dub, come on, surely you're not seriously saying this game deserves a high score? :)

# That article is bias against PS3Guest 2007-09-05 08:53
why is QJ posting these ***** articles that are directly aimed at telling the gamers that the PS3 controler sucks...

I bet they haven't even tested the control let alone tried to play a few hours to actually learn the ins in outs of it ...but just Jumps out to attack the PS3 saying that people are force to use the sixaxis.. THAT IS STRAIGHT UP BULL*****.

since when do you hear any unbias articles ever ranting anything about how gamers were force to use the xbot and the Wii controller given how bow bad some of the gameplay were or if even made any sense.

heck the first time i played the DS and had to (or according the author was force to) use the stylus to draw pictures or or to click a button or pick something up

yeah I hated switching back to the d pad and so on but I realize that's the new thing that was part of the game and over time just got used to it and it worked fine.. so stop your complaining...

for you retards out there that's what it suppose to be about.

If you have a problem with that go buy a NDS or a Wii you'll see what mean.

Is there something wrong with changing the rules every once in a while? Give them credit for trying out something new, even though their try seems to have fallen flat on its face precisely because of what they changed.

And I do think that if you were to master the controls, the game is probably enjoyable. But, until I put my money where my mouth is and try out the game myself, I can't guarantee that the game is really good. I'll probably be trying out this game sometime late in this month (probably month-end) and will post what I think of it, although I suspect this game might be old news at that time.

Why is it every time the PS3 games get a bad review there is always someone who claims bias against the PS3, and when they dont say that they say - yer but MS have used their money to buy off this or that review site etc LOL its just so stupid I have no further comment..

That's na2rul's approach. That way when the PS3 pulls out a decent game it's kick ass. 600 bucks is kind of a big deal even if I had no expectations.

It always seems to be flamed for it's control scheme. Here is a motion controlled game for PS3 and people are more inclined to forgive it than burn it.

To all the diehard PS3 fans, sorry but the excuse that 'you need to get use to it, its a new way of playing the game!' is not the problem here. Infact, moving a controller left and right, back and forward is not anything new in the department of flight simulation games (which is what Lair is more or less). This game infact does not at all offer anything new except for the fact that you are a dragon instead of a war plane and such. This game is very linear, granted the graphics are great but that does not make a game great. Its like saying the new 3 star wars movie were superior to the old triology because they are graphicly superior. The problem here is with substance. So much to say even if the controls were perfected and they allowed people to use analog sticks instead of the six axis, the game still falls on its face because simply put, it is not fun. Consider this everyone: if this game were released with the first batch of games when the PS3 launched and was not a PS3 exclusive and lets say was released by a third party game developer.. people would've been much more eager to take a shiet on the game. The only thing making this game worthy of critisism to critisism is the fact that it was suppose to raise the bar but instead it quite literally flew to low.

The video for dis game says it all. Its real boring and da controls dont make the game exciting. All you do is try your best to make the dragon go where you want it to go plus the way you hold the controler makes it hard to use the buttons and triggers. Try again.
