Rumble pack lawsuits cost Sony more than $152 million |
Ó

Immersion recently announced to the press that its operating income for the first quarter of this year was US$ 131 million. Immersion notes that this was driven largely by "profit" from litigation conclusions in their recent patent litigations with Sony Computer Entertainment in the amount of US$ 134.6 million.
Immersion's regular business revenues amounted to a comparatively small, US$ 6.0 million.
Immersion announced that so far, it has received from Sony Computer Entertainment US$ 119.9 million as a result of the conclusion of the patent infringement suit, and is expecting to gain an addition US$ 29.9 million as revenue and US$ 2.3 million as interest income. (All that, related to the litigation.)
Ultimately Immersion sees that they will receive at least US$ 152.2 million from Sony.
While Sony currently does not offer the "rumble" feature in the SIXAXIS controller that comes with the PS3, it has been reported that they may be working with Immersion to bring back the "rumble" in upcoming controllers for their PlayStation 3 console.

Good without rumble it feels empty..
Not good at all, they, I guess there wont be a trade in for your old pad but will be forced to buy a whole new One.
$152 million loss they are in the poo.
Wow! I understand now why they didn't want to include it in the PS3. But they would of had to cough up dosh for using the tech in the PS2 controllers anyway. So they probably should of bit the bullet a long time ago. The exclusion of rumble was a mistake, it will be interesting to see if they release a rumble-pak or release brand new controllers instead.
Rumble and motion technology! Perfect :)
It should also add some weight to the controller too! :)
Compared to the money Sony brings in $152 Million is a drop in the bucket. They will offset that penalty in no time. I know I will go buy at least 4 of the new controllers with the rumble for my Ps3.
I wonder how much of that will be made back by selling the "new and improved" controller with rumble in it. Heck, the current price of the controllers are pretty high, in my opinion. I can see them tacking on another $10 - $15 for the "new" version.
I wonder how much Microsoft paid to settle their lawsuit with Immersion out of court and to buy Immersion shares. I know sony really got screwed by trying to fight their lawsuit though! 152 Million ouch for that much I would hope Immersion would let them use rumble in the suxaxis.
Sony and the company made up, SONY bought the rights to the technology!
Lol only $152,000,000 they will make that abck easy. Most PS3 owners own 2 or more pads anyway and many will purchase the new rumble pads as well.
You know you're doing something wrong when 95% (I calculate) of your business income is from a lawsuit. If I were Sony I'd drop them and find another rumble provider, as I'm sure Immersion is now used to leeching off of them. Hell, it'd be cheaper for them to make their own tech from the ground up at this point, I'm sure.
"If I were Sony I'd drop them and find another rumble provider"
LOL, such as who? No really, name the other companies offering the kind of rumble technology offered by Immersion.
Use some common sense please. If it was so easy, Sony and perhaps some of the other game companies would have taken that options YEARS AGO.
I thought Sony said they didnt need rumble? I thought they called rumble old technology? Once again, Sony will say anything just to sell their product. Oh well, at least now it wont feel like Im holding a cheap TV remote in my hands when I play...when I play...uh, well, when Im watching a BluRay movie.
Was it really necessary to post something we all already knew just to try get some reactions from the guys who like it?
If NO other company makes rumble features for the dozens of game controllers, joy sticks, control wheels, ect. that are on the market, I guess your argument has merit, but I don't see how there isn't a single company that creates these rumble features in all these products from all these different brands.
I guess if you can prove to me that there is only one company responsible for force-feedback devices the world over, what you said is true. Otherwise you're just saying "lol ur a lair." If you have information about the rumble industry I'm missing, please share it.
