Rockstar's Neil Corbett on major differences between GTA4 versions *UPDATE* |
Ó
Neil Corbett, the lead QA for Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 4 (for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360), recently posted an interesting tidbit regarding the game on rllmukforum.com. He discussed the major differences between the two versions of the game as well as the exclusive content found on the Xbox 360 version. Here's a quote from Corbett explaining the fundamental differences between the two platform versions of the game:
Hello, as it stands the Xbox 360 version has the smoother framerate & far faster loading times (without any installing) but the PS3 version does have that warm feeling with bleached out sunsets & the like. The extra content of the 360 version is significant but nothing like an 'extra Island' at all- as the lead platform it is currently the superior version however. Just you wait until your first windscreen-flying experience.
It seems like the graphical difference between the two platforms is what sets the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game apart. However, we still have to see for ourselves exactly how the upcoming title will play itself out once it goes live.
Grand Theft Auto IV is slated to be released by the end of April and will feature good old Liberty City, which fans of the series are already more than familiar with. Keep coming back to this space for more updates.
Buy: [Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3)]
Buy: [Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360)]
*UPDATE* As pointed out by a couple of commenters (thanks, sickofitall and Thinker!), videogaming247.com has declared the whole rllmuk forum debacle as fake. According to videogaming247, a Rockstar spokesperson has confirmed that the Neil Corbett posting on the rllmuk forums is not Rockstar North's Neil Corbett.

qj are just asking people to start arguing which console is better with this.
I hate all these damn fights between which system is better etc. but I'm glad qj posted this, at least we know which is the better version to get your money's worth. I mean no conflict with the ps3ers, but as a consumer this information is crucial.
I hope they fix the framerate on PS3 before release or even with an after release patch. Its a powerful system.
Anyway QJ, thanks for posting the latest GTA IV news, thats what i like!
I'm thinking that Infinity Ward and naughty Dog are going to have to hold a boot camp to show other companies how to develop properly for the PS3. Honestly I think it's just sheer laziness and if I'm wrong about that, then it's lack of talent. either way they could do a better job cause we all know the PS3 can handle any game you throw at it if you know how to work with it.
Looks like I'm getting the XBOX 360 version.
I would have thought they could do better with the PS3 one than they did.
It's important to realize that they didn't say that the PS3 was capable of more, just that the 360 was the lead platform for the game.
This means that they are pooling more resources into the 360 version of the game. More $ = more programmers. If the PS3 were the leading platform for the game, it would be the other way around.
We all know that the CELL architecture isn't anything like typical CPU's. luckily though, we have companies like Insomniacs who are publishing dev tools to make ports easier for the CELL or anything for that matter.
If they can't release the games exactly the same, I'll have to buy an xbox 360 now? That's *****!! Code properly you lazy devs!
ps: It's not even official so nobody (including me) should really post on this.
why did he go out and say that. Does he not want anyone to buy it on PS3?
I wonder how it is possible that the PS3 load times are slower. How can a HDD be slower than a DVD drive?
Could somebody please explain me this?
It seems that a lot of the games on the PS3 require you to do this before you can even play the game. So if you have the 20GB PS3 you would only have room for about four games worth of preloaded data and couldnt put anything else on your harddrive. That is terrible.

Hey Yaz,
Continuing our discussion on Lazy-Devs, I think this is another argument in my favour. Surely, for Rockstar, this was their main franchise with guaranteed income. They felt that developing PROPERLY for the PS3 (the way InfinityWard did for COD4 and EA did for Burnout Paradise) would require more resources, both financial and manpower, than was worth for making a profit when they started developing. Apparently they didn't count on the PS3 gathering steam as it's doing currently, and so they decided to take the LAZY option of cutting corners. Tell me how that that's not lazy?
Regards,
Thinker
Ohh, just wanted to add:
Of course he will say that the X360 is better. He was paid by Microsoft after all...
I guess this topic doesn't count. Looks like some 360 fanboy started this fake post (probably part of his wet dream :) ). Here's the link:
http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/03/05/rockstar-confirms-that-superior-gta-iv-360-rllmuk-poster-is-fake/
As usual, in case QJ's shoddy interface decides to truncate this link, I've broken it up into 3 lines for you:
http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/03/05/
rockstar-confirms-that-superior-gta-iv-360-
rllmuk-poster-is-fake/
As usual, if you see any "+" signs in the URL (thanks for this cruddy glitch QJ), substitute with an "equals" sign.
The truth is revealed in its most naked form...PS3 version is identical to the 360 version other than having warmer colours and better AA.
I totally agree with Manny151. These developers need to get their acts together and figure out what they're doing wrong with the PS3. It's fully capable of doing anything and more than the 360. And what's with Rockstar favoring the 360 version anyways? Extra content, more of this, more of that....... yatta, yatta
Also, if you start and lead on the 360 it's hard to get quality on the PS3. It's like making addons for cars and starting with a civic and trying to port them same items over to a g'd Ferrari.
READ THE POSTS THIS HAS INDEED BEEN CONFIRMED FAKE, JUST SOME 360 FANBOY WANTING SOME ATTENTION - IGNORE IT.
nice car choice hush404.

You think they're going to install the entire game on the HDD? The PS3's blu ray drive on average is slightly slower than the XBOX 360's. The unified RAM of the 360 may also contribute to better load times.
I guess you play 10 different games in a timespan of 2 days then eh ?
People, stop *****ing on the 5GB installs, there is nothing wrong with them. If you run out of space, buy yourself a 200GB harddrive for all I care.
50M means you become their puppet until the product comes out.
/* cue Dave Chappelle */
It's sad a 360 fanboy would post something like this. How pathetic.
The source post was faked.
I just read it and have calmed my self down some lol
That's why...they know the 360 is not as capable as the PS3 so they bribed Rockstar just to make their version seem more superior...frankly, it won't be.
Why do you talk about loading TIMES when we all know that there will be ONE AND ONLY ONE loading screen, in the startup of the game? We have heard this in interviews, previews and fan sites many times now. When you enter a "Job-cone" we've seen in previous titles, we will see the cutscene without any loading times whatsoever. A fade to black and then a cutscene. NO loading time.
So what does it matter that we will have to wait a maximum of 30 seconds more in the beginning of our X hours of gameplay? It's nothing more than a needless discussion about what console "totally beats the cr4p out of the other".
IGN said the ps3 version had better framerate while the x360 version had more "punchy" colors. X360 always have more "punchy" colors since they never put the "RBG full" and "real white" in the ps3 options since they have to test with consoles defaults settings (same when they test mp3 players). And for the framerate, it's normal the ps3 can get "a bit" better since it has 8 processor (ps: the ps3 is faster for processing while the x360 have a little bit better GPU and tons more RAM (the biggest flaw of the ps3 is it's RAM for devs)).
Still, the two versions will be GREAT! So stop thinking about it!
we all want our choice of formats to do well, but when you get idiots like this, that put on that they are spokesmen for r*, or other game devs, it just causes unneeded friction between console owners!! the fact is that the two formats will probably be similar to each other, but with a small difference between the two graphically!!! i'll be happy with GTA if its a good game on my console and couldn't care less what it plays like on a 360, as i would expect a 360 owner would feel the same way!!!
The 360 runs games without installing anything just fine.
hmmmm..... I never heard of videogaming247? I'll think I'll get the 360 version instead I want the DLC anyway so it's not a big deal.I'll have to wait for actual comparisons b4 I make judgment.Because AC on 360 looked much better than the ps3 version even though the devs. said they look the same.
Is with two games DMC 4, and Lost Planet, the reason the 360 doesn't have to do this is because their games are all crammed to fit on a 9GB with a blu-ray disc you get 50GB thus to help shorten the load time because they use uncompressed sound ect they have you install data, I own a 360 and a PS3, both are great, people need to move on and end the stupid fanboy war, besides any company could have the better of the two multi games if they paid 50m for exclusive content.
so the extra content is something microsoft paid them to do?
Maybe they'll release thay same content on PS3 through PlayStation Network.
if you have a 20 gb hdd then upgrade. my mp3 player has more space than that.
I'm still getting the 360 version for downloadable content.
ms paid for DLC exclusivity
i think wont benefit and increase sales of 360, since GTA's first day release will be equal on both consoles. GTA name sells itself well enough now.
the ps2 however had that timed exclusivity which REALLY helped PS2 increase market. later release of GTA on xbox wasnt as noticable to the public.
If MS paid for timed exclusivity, it wud hav DEFINETLY helped.
100 hours of gameplay, who cud want more? Only some unless its free
If the 360 had this problem all you would hear from PS3 lovers is ****talking about this problem. Even though a blu-ray disk can hold 50GB of data the blu-ray drive on the PS3 is only 2x speed and cant get the data out of the disk fast enough to play certain games properly and that is the reason why some games need to have data preloaded on your harddrive. You shouldn't have to buy an extra harddrive for your system just so you can play games. Your harddrive should be for downloads.
Looks like a 360 fan wanted to freak out us PS3'ers.
Well, it honestly worked, so woot.
Once again, only 2 games require a true install, and actually most games don't require an install, and blu-ray allows uncompressed sound, if 360 use a media format which allowed up to 50GB of data per disc you can bet your arse there'd be installs on your HDD.
Which is better, which is better PS3 Xbox 360 who cares which ever you play GTA i still going to be the same old drive here pick this up up take it there kill him go there get board spend hours driving around doing hit and runs seeing how many stars you can get before your killed.
