Rockstar support looking into GTA4 freeze issue - Image 1

A call to Rockstar's support service revealed that the company is investigating what could be behind the freezing issues exhibited by the company's newly launched Grand Theft Auto IV (Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360), but they've obviously been caught unawares.

As the Kotaku caller continued to probe the factors that could've led to the introductory sequence lockups, the support rep who attended the call mentioned that it wasn't limited to the PlayStation 3.

The rep was very apologetic about the issue (and relieved for not being yelled at for once) and claimed that the GTA4 also seemed to lock up on some Xbox 360s. Now this has made it very confusing for Rockstar, as they've previously noticed how most of the reports for PS3 lockups were attributed to the 60GB version of Sony's console.

What made them even more puzzled is that not all of the 60 GB versions exhibited this issue. Seems a bit familiar, doesn't it? Especially for an SKU that seems to be racking up erratic issues.

Anyways, this coupled with the complaints from Microsoft's side make for an unlikely chance that a solution for the problem would come out soon.

When a user-claimed solution (allegedly given by Rockstar's support representatives) was suggested, the representative said that such a solution has never been officially confirmed by support or tech to solve the issue. In fact, he said that cleaning out the PS3 hard drive of all GTA4 related data and re-installing was never heard to have helped a single complainant. But he hinted that it might not hurt to try.

The rep says that no deadline for a fix can be promised, but we'll be keeping our eyes peeled for more updates anyway.

» i'm worried about this

i imported my US version copy (don't have it yet)... but if ever they release a patch to totally fix this will i have problems with compatibility since i have an aussie ps3 but a US game? especially noting that aussies are supposed to have a different copy of the game...

the patch that they could release here in OZ might be custom made for that region... and if i download it and tried it on my game it might end up bricking my PS3... i don't know, i'm not really a techy guy.

» mine froze

I have a 60 gig version. Got it the day it came out. I made it just after the first date with Michele and then it froze up. I wasn't too mad because it had just auto-saved, but still annoying.

» You have the 60 GB version?

I'm not sure, Quixand, but all reports point to just a couple of 60 GB units having experienced faults - not the launch ones.

I'm guessing you have the launch one, so yeah, you shouldn't be worried. Or should you?

by platon - 2008-04-29 15:48
» errr

So it happens to x360 users and ps3 users as well, but in the two cases, it's really rare. Could it simply be the dvd/BD player of some that can't read fast enough (old or bricked a bit) ?

Anyway, I played all day long on ps3 80g and never had any kind of problems. The only problem I have is understanding what little jacob and his friends are trying to say in "rasta language" or something, lol.

Anyway, it's not a big problem, those "freezes". Assassin's creed had some too. It froze on me (assassin) 2-3 times before I finished the game, wich is nota lot of times. Still, I suppose it's not fun in a mission of GTA4. Anyway, I never had a problem on GTA4.

» yup i have a 60GB

Aussie launch version, no. 33 in the line at Myers Sydney City (got my ugly mug in a couple of newspaper clippings... you have to follow the cameras baby!!!!)...

as we all know the launch 60GB in the US is a lot different from our launch 60GB here down under...

the specs of our 60GBs are more similar to the 80GBs in N.A. right down to the backward compatibility and not to discount that it was released here a good six months after the release from Japan and America so for sure the batch of 60gbs we've got here are way different.

» Oh. Okay.

Well cross your fingers, bub. I don't know the odds, but neither does Rockstar.

I guess it's fair game for everyone. Wonder if my copy will work when it arrives?

by Someone_PR - 2008-04-29 16:08
» hey buddy...

it's been a while... anyway from what I read and hear yes, they have some issues in both sides but are separates problems.

In tecnical support in the ps3 side said that erasing the install game file and to installing again will solve some people and in the forums the same people posting the problems they said that that resolve it.

The 360 one from what some friends said is like the bully same problems with framerates and pop ins and that will solve with a patch I guess.

Just hope that a patch solve both problems but anyway is a minority.

» hey man!!

how are you!! i haven't been on PSN lately...

but last night i was and i saw Vsion playing GTA4... i don't know if you remember him but he's a QJ reg... the lucky bastard!!! mine is still on its way.

anyway, on topic... i don't know how true this is:

"Rockstar, in their very finite wisdom designed the game to have no loading times. That%u2019s great, except for the fact that GTA IV now overloads the cache and causes a lock-up (freeze). So now, instead of saving load times and providing a seamless experience, Rockstar has forced some machines to crash while attempting to load from the cache."

» I wish i wasnt affected!

I have this problem and it is real. (PAL 60Gb Launch Console)

Cannot watch any motion video without it freezing.

Skip the movies and you can play the game for 30 secs through to 10 minutes and then freeze.

Not even the PS button works, hard switch off to reset.

PS has never overheated and all other games play fine, even Folding@Home which uses lots of power and produces lots of heat runs perfectly.

Seems to be a major bug!

» as long

as it doesn't brick my PS3... that's the thing that scares me...

by Ceasar S. - 2008-04-29 16:50
» Psst, Quixand.

Where'd ya get that juicy piece of info?

by Quixand - 2008-04-29 16:53
» i hate to say this

cause i'm a Sony Fanboy but i got that from xboxfamily.net... yah i know... i know... SCREW YOU ALL!

anyway here's the link:

by Someone_PR - 2008-04-29 16:55
» me neither...

anyway if the info it's true that will explain the erase and reinstall of the game install I guess...

by Quixand - 2008-04-29 17:02
» anyway

i'm not sure about this info, i mean if the game does "overload the cache" as they say then it should happen to everybody and not just to a minor few... cause it should be pretty much be the same with everybody right?

i repeat i'm not a techy, i'm just working from logic here.

if it is true the the non-hdd xbox 360s should have no problems at all... and since for the 360 the hdd install is optional then it would seem better (if this is true) to not install the game at all and just play from the disk to avoid the freezing thing.

by Ceasar S. - 2008-04-29 17:11
» Yeah, it does look iffy.

But we'll still look into it. Just wish my copy was here to do some trials with and without install.

by LostLogic - 2008-04-29 17:18
» 60 gig

I have the European version of the game and the first generation 60 gig version of the PS3.

I've yet to experience any problems. A quick note though: I've partitioned the playstation so that it has a 10 gig partition for linux and the rest for the PS3 system. If this is the reason, I do not know. But it might be a tip for those who have tried "everything". :)

» Locking is caused by the PS3 overheating

If you have a launch machine in the vertical it is much more likely to lockup after about 3 or 4 hours.

If you put it flat (known to run cooler than vertical) it should be ok.

by RexNox - 2008-04-30 01:43
» my 60..

works just fine.

But, maybe it's because my 60 isn't a 60 anymore. It's a 160 (I upgraded my HDD).

Don`t post video of ps3 Gta iv freezing issues on youtube.

They deleted my Youtube account for posting video of the freezing issue ingame. I was not flaming take two over the glitch either. Just wanted people to see the glitch for themselves.

To say I am annoyed is being mild After take two requested my account deleted. I had over a million and a half views on my channel.

They don`t want the public to see this glitch.

I feel like flaming Take Two over this but the game is just too good.

» The Xbox 360 freezing issue is real, my brother had it!

Ok so me and my brother both got GTAIV on xbox 360.

It plays fine on my Xbox 360 (had it switched 2 times by microsoft since release...latest being last march)

But it froze 12 times on his console. In one day. His console was bought in October of 2006. But I doubt it's console issue, I don't know why but I think it might be faulty disk since the problem seems spread out on many console model and on both ps3 and xbox 360...

by Someone_PR - 2008-04-30 05:37
» be carefull

with the xbox freezing in a game, that's all I have to say lol... that's when my xbox give signs that will come the RROD. The same happens when I was playing Rockband :(.

by TheDude - 2008-04-30 08:13
» na 60g launch console here...

Mine froze 5 times in the first hour. I deleted some demos and reinstalled and haven't had a single freeze yet in ten hours of play. Hopefully this works for others.

by jackstraw419 - 2008-04-30 08:48
» Mine froze

Up twice so far. I have a 60gb version bought the ps3 about 2 months ago. Mine froze up twice now. I just waited about 30 sec to a minute and it came back. I hope it doesn't freeze any more

by Justingraziano - 2008-04-30 08:50
» 80GB has the same issue

My 80GB is freezing every few seconds for a few seconds too and NOT just in the first cutscene, everywhere.

by DisposableDweeb - 2008-04-30 09:52
» Im struck, too

My game froze once, but there was alot going on onscreen, though. It also froze up while in a cutscene (the first one with Mikhail) and it wouldnt come back on. so yeah. this sucks. i hoep it doesnt happen again

by Thinker - 2008-04-30 13:22
» No problems here

I have a 60 GB PS3 (US). Got my copy of GTA4 today (ordered from Amazon). Haven't played much yet, but hasn't frozen or anything like that.

I hope they fix the problem soon though, so those PS3 and 360 owners who are having issues can enjoy the game without the hassle of having the game conk out on them.

by Master Chef - 2008-04-30 14:30
» Mine just froze on 360

And unfortunately, I lost about 3 hours of work :(

by kevin_eleven - 2008-04-30 16:29
» try this

the first time i play it freeze for 1 min than after a while it freeze completely. i restart my ps3 and it works, i think it freeze because after the game is installed it didn't tell you to quit game and go back in. other games that have to be install to your ps3 always tell you to restart, so maybe that is the issue. another way is to turn off the internet.
