Box art for Grand Theft Auto 4 - Image 1History has a tendency to repeat itself, doesn't it? In this case, it's Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3, Xbox 360) and the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC). The situation: An edited version of GTA 4 will sell in The Land Down Under on April 29.

This time, the developer took the first step and applied the censor's scissors straight away, as the OFLC has no R18 rating in its system. When you have a game with masturbation and other explicit sexual references, a certain amount of care is especially needed.

Nevertheless, with all the run-ins that Rockstar has had with the OFLC in the past, it's understandable that the developer would do that. After all, the OFLC frowned upon GTA 3, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas after mature content was discovered in those titles. It took some editing on Rockstar's part before the OFLC allowed those games on store shelves.

Here's the clincher: Rockstar hasn't revealed exactly which material has been cut. Unless the company chooses to do otherwise, it looks like a little game of compare and contrast is in order.

» What the cheese.

These articles said that it wouldn't be censored!!!! http://www.gta4.tv/article/784525/australia-receive-uncensored-gtaiv/ http://xbox360.qj.net/Rumor-Australia-s-OFLC-won-t-censor-Grand-Theft-Auto-4-/pg/49/aid/112976 the latter was said to be a rumor, but anyway... DAMN IT, why do we get edited games? its craphole.

I don't think Rockstar really wanted to censor GTA 4. It's just that the developer has to comply with certain requirements of the country where the game will be released. :( In this case, it's Australia.

» Like Quixand said...

PS3 games aren't region locked, so i'll probably grab a foreign version of GTA4 off eBay or something. +)

» ehhh

this sucks, now ive wasted $10 on my pre-order, I just bought a US copy on Ebay so I'll have to wait a few days after release to play it... so now its double the price and censored compared to the US version -____- thats soo lame

by spicyhamster - 2008-04-04 04:20
» for the last time

its not double. it looks that way, but when you factor in conversion rates and cost of living, australians technically get paid twice as much as americans. minimum wage in arizona: $6.75 minimum wage in aus: 12.80AUS (as of 2006). converted to US$ is 11.79USD. that's why your ***** costs more. you get paid more.

» Region free FTW

Hey Quixand, give movietyme.com a look in as well, they take a bit longer to deliver than play-asia (~2 weeks), but don't charge for shipping.

» but

minimum wage isnt the only reason it cost more, it's our *****ty import tax too, but still the fact is it's double the price to me, cause I just bought it half the price on ebay.
