If you somehow thought Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption was going to be all about prairie dogs and campfire singalongs, think again. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser recently told IGN that blood will indeed flow in the sequel to Red Dead Revolver.

"We didn't want it to feel like those old Saturday afternoon TV shows, matinee movie Westerns where people kind of get shot and crumble and die very quickly, very carefully off-camera," he said.

Houser clarified though that it's not just gratuitous. The violence is there to "properly depict these kind of characters and this kind of world, the violence had to feel slightly raw and unpleasant."

To really dig deep down into the psyche of the late 19th century, Houser noted that Redemption also touches on some of the era's racial tensions, although these aren't fully represented as it was just "too unpleasant".

Along with the insights into the game's underlying theme, Houser confirmed that multiplayer is definitely supported, but it's not finalized yet so more details will have to wait. Red Dead Redemption is scheduled for a fall 2009 release on PS3 and Xbox 360.
