Resistance: fall of Man

A seemingly inconspicuous note seems to have caught the eye of most Resistance: Fall of Man fans:

Has the graphics improved over the E3 demo? If so how much?

Over the E3 demo? Hah! I'm incredibly impressed with how much the graphics have improved in the past two weeks. I almost didn't recognize a couple of levels now that the lighting has gone in.

Insomniac Games

Based from this note, it seems that Resistance will be one-heck-of-a-game-with-oh-so-awesome-graphics. And that would be something to really look forward to when it launches in November. However, as of the moment, there are no screens or trailers to verify this, so you might want to check our site regularly for updates.

Not familiar with the game? Resistance: Fall of Man is an FPS-slash-RPG with an interesting story to boot. Basically, the plot revolves on an alternate reality where Britain and the US join arms against the Chimera-horrible aliens that have an appetite for human beings. As U.S. Army Ranger, Sgt. Nathan Hale, it's your job to make sure this Chimera creatures are laid to waste. Insomniac made sure there are loads of cool ammo to keep the Chimera at bay, so that's something you might want to watch out for that as well. This game is expected to released by November of this year, along with the PS3 console.

Finally, some positive news for PS3. I'ts been very rough months for PS3 with all these negative feedback from various media on it's price.

Well, this is still can be taken as a rumor...but if it is true and i hope it is... then this game is one hack of a HALO killer on PS3... sony needs a game like this for the North American boyz.

"then this game is one hack of a HALO killer on PS3..."

It is no more a Halo killer than Saint's Row is a GTA killer or Forza a GT killer, but it does looks like being a solid FPS for the PS3, which is great. :)

What? RPG? It's not an RPG it's a fully fledged FPS isn't it?

THis game's gonna rock, will be my first PS3 title. 40 Multiplayer FTW!

#3- Forza a GT killer? LMAO. Also, lots of games (True Crime series, Driver etc) have tried to steal GTA's power but all have failed.

I hope this one turns good, it's one of the very few reasons to get a PS3 on launch, so the reviews better be good.

In no way will this be a Halo killer however, at most a good Sci-Fi Call of Duty substitute, but I'd love to be corrected.

CS:S > Halo freaking easily, and I think Insomniacs upcoming title is the kind of title that can proove that console games can easily surpase Halo. (i have faith in Insomniac as a developer, and i think this game is gona be freaking awesome.)

hell, even doom 1 and the hl1 were better than both halo's combined. the only reason people even consider halo good is because consoles don't have many options when it comes to fps's. but all that changes this gen.

Well words are cheap, time will tell, though personally I'm sure it won't be nearly as good, this reminds me of Killzone being hyped so much as the Halo killer for PS2, and we know how bad it was, and here it goes all over again.

Maybe it will be better, I hope it will be, but right now there's nothing that tells this is going to be better than the best console FPS franchise ever.

And Doom 1 better than Halo? Please.

# Well first let me say that I love Halo 1 and 2TheProfessor 2006-08-21 07:12
But I can't help agree that the reason it was so overrated and hyped was because it was the first Console FPS done right (and you can't discount MS big marketing campaign) and quite frankly it has little to no competition yet.

Even without that though, both halo games are fantastic, and multiplayer is fun and addicting. I still play Halo 2 on my 360 (the controller is so much better for it) but unfortunately it freezes once a day =( and I think is due to it being an xbox title.

Some common questions about Resistance:

* Does this game look better than Halo 2? Yes it does but that's because is a next gen title.

* Will it play better than Halo 2? Who knows, but the weapon strategy for the game sounds extremely promising.

* Will multiplayer be better than Halo2? Hard to say but things are pointing at a yes.

* Will this be better than Gears of War (which is it's real competition and even more crucial to MS than Halo3)? The hype around Gears is much larger right now. Gears just feels cooler and MS has already hyped and marketed it to no end. This is great for Epic becuse MS has no other big production title coming this fall to worry about.

* Will this be another Killzone (a failed attempt at a AAA console FPS)? Definitely not. This is a AAA developer we are talking about here. The team working on Resistance is the size of all the Epic (Gears of War/Unreal) company. With the multimillion dollar budget Sony is going to invest in this title's marketing, expect it to be an instant hit. I wouldn't be surprise if it's average score was 9.5+ when it is released.

* Will it be better than Halo 3? Can't say but one thing is for certain people will tire of Halo. Unless they come out with some really awesome new ideas I see this game being a blockbuster but selling much less than Halo 1&2 did. For example Halo 1 sold 9.3 Million, Halo 2 sold 7 million and I predict Halo 3 will sell 3-5 million unless they introduce something much different especially due to the overwhelming amount of good FPSes coming to consoles.

and i think Microsoft knows this, which is why they are pushing Gears of War like nobodies business.

the decline of Halo sales have shown that at least some people have grown tired of the franchise, and have maybe moved on to new things (maybe those 2 million people that bought Halo 1, but didn't buy Halo 2 bought a decent computer and got F.E.A.R, or CoD2 instead?). me, i'm of the camp that Halo is incredibly overrated, and i really, really hate that game. oh, i owned it, because my friend wouldn't shut up about it. i bought it, played it single player once. played it multiplayer once (had a blast), but after that, it got put on the shelf and never touched again. the game truly shines when playing with a bud (in co-op mode), and battling it out with a group of friends (when i worked at Activision back on Spider-Man 2, the guys would stay after work and hook up the X Boxes, and we'd have 6-16 player team deathmatches and capture the flag. that was friggin sweet).

but as a single player title, i think Halo shows a glaring weakness in it's just not as fun (not to say it's not fun, just not as fun as playing with people). Halo 2....i really didn't like that one. i don't know why, as, fundamentally, it was the same as the first, but there were some changes made that really felt off to me somehow, so my enjoyment of that title was even greatly diminished than with that of the first. again, multiplayer was the only thing i really enjoyed with Halo 2, but not enough to warrant a purchase.

so basically, Gears of War is trying to be built up as the new Halo, and for the audience that loves that type of game, they are going to eat it up. but for those that don't like FPSes (and as hard as it is for some to believe, a lot of people don't like FPSes; like, oh, the *JAPANESE*, there's only 129 million of them in Japan), i think Mass Effect may turn some heads, as that game just looks phenomenal (though i have a sinking feeling that it will feel just like KOTOR, but then again, is that really a *bad* thing? lol).

so far the 360 hasn't proven it's worth to me yet, but it's really working on it with titles like Mass Effect, Crackdown, and Dead Rising. once a few more killer exclusives come out for the console (and *NOT* available on the PC also), i'll pick one up. until then, however, my first Next Gen console choice will be the PS3.

Interesting points 12 and 13.

Size of team, investment on marketing or budget doesn't assure a great game, examples are endless, Tomb Raider games, Driver 3, Sims Online, etc. Best example is killzone, marketing was everywhere, the budget was huge, but still it was a bad game.

Insomniac is a great developer but their experience with fps is thin. I'm sure Halo 3 will be a great game because Bungie know the genre well, but Resistance has yet to prove Insomniac can do it.

Besides, you think 7 million sales is bad news? I see it more as the beginning of the decline of current gen consoles not being as mindblowing as the release of Halo 1 was, which by then was the best graphics on any platform, but still Halo 2 was great sucess in any case.

Previews are positive but not mindblowing, graphics are great but not better than what Gears of War can offer, the tilt controller is not getting much use, as a launch game there's a big risk that the game could be rushed, so though I wish it's a great game (I'll get a PS3 if only to play PS2 games in HD), I can't assure right now that it'll get 9.5 rating by any means, as far as we know.

# Yeah Figboy, I wouldnt suggest a 360 right now.TheProfessor 2006-08-21 10:16
I mostly just play Halo 2 with mine =) ( the 360 controller is much better for Halo). I bought prey recently and played it for two days =(. Prey online has extreme lag and I just can't handle it so that was that.

The machine is pretty sweet though I can't deny it. I do feel like I got my money's worth on the hardware at least. But as for games there is just a great lack of titles to play right now. Don't bother with Dead Rising, it is quite frustrating. Is one of those games you either like (not love) or hate with all of your being. Is fun but just frustrating. Until Gears of Wars hits there really isn't anything to get exited about.

On the halo comment, yeah Multiplayer is where Halo shines. I remember playing co-op with my cousin and having one of the best times ever playing a game. Come to think of it I only played that game on Co-op and never alone. On Halo 2, I sort of had to since my cousin moved away and wouldn't spend money on an Xbox and a live account just to play one game.

Now on to the PS3. I am extremely exited about this machine. Seems like a steal to me and if people can't afford it, I pity them. Resistance, Warhawk and Motorstorm are offering a great and very diverse experience right on Launch. Free online play means more adoption and the fact Linux comes out of the box makes the nerd in me jump with joy. I have also been waiting for more HD content and Blu-Ray will be a extremely nice addition to my beautiful 42 inch HDTV. That's what makes Playstation platforms so great, is their game and multimedia versatility.

I am not really looking forward to the Wii. I think it will be great for kids and I will probably end up buying one for my nephew but I am just not exited at all about it. I will buy it if there are great party titles but will have to wait and see. People are claiming "Is cheaper to create a game on the Wii" but they fail to realize that the reason it's cheaper is because it prevents developers from making amazing looking games. PS3/360 games can be low budget but no one would give them a second look unless they appear in the PSN (PlayStation Network Platform)/live marketplaces. Another claim is, "More and more third party developers are announcing Wii games", sure but that was true of N64 and Gamecube at the start. I'm actually seeing less support for the Wii this time around. Just look at every new multiplatform game announced, It's 360/PS3 and sometimes also PC. As more and more of these companies invest in new tech for the next gen I doubt they will show much love for the Wii. Nonetheless, Nintendo can single-handedly make it a success. Just look at the DS, Nintendo games are the only ones that shine on that front.

"Size of team, investment on marketing or budget doesn't assure a great game, examples are endless,

True but it does help. Great examples are Halo, Final Fantasy games, MSG games. BTW the killzone team was much smaller than the Resistance team.

"Best example is killzone, marketing was everywhere, the budget was huge, but still it was a bad game."

I wouldn't call it a bad game, it was actually a pretty good attempt, expectations were just too high and many were disappointed. Just look at some of the scores:

PSM: 9.5 out of 10

1UP: 8 out of 10

G4: 4 out of 5

GameBiz: 76 out of 100

Game Informer: 7.5 out of 10

IGN: 7.5 out of 10

Commercially however it was a big success thanks to the marketing behind it.

"Insomniac is a great developer but their experience with fps is thin."

Well one true FPS game under their belt. But have you played the Rachet and Clank games? You can play the games in FPS mode. Everything about the game screams FPS. Of course it has platform elements but make no doubt about it, the game is heavily influenced by the FPS genre.

"I'm sure Halo 3 will be a great game because Bungie know the genre well, but Resistance has yet to prove Insomniac can do it."

Halo 3 will be great no doubt. However Resistance has impressed many already and it's only getting better. Have you seen the 13 page behind the scenes cover story on PSM? Is mouth watering.

"Besides, you think 7 million sales is bad news? I see it more as the beginning of the decline of current gen consoles not being as mind-blowing as the release of Halo 1 was, which by then was the best graphics on any platform, but still Halo 2 was great success in any case."

Can't argue there. But Halo sales was not as mind-blowing as you may think. Look at the PS2 games that have beat Halo 1/2 for example. And lets not even get to Nintendo which has titles with double these numbers (mostly cause they bundled their games).

# Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (14.36 million)

# Grand Theft Auto: Vice City PS2( 13.63 million)

# Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas PS2 (13.44 million)

# Grand Theft Auto III PS2(11.42 million)

-- these only beat Halo 2

# Final Fantasy X (7.93 million) ( Final Fantasy VII got (PS1 - >9.8 million))

# Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (7.01 million)

"The tilt controller is not getting much use, as a launch game there's a big risk that the game could be rushed"

I am also afraid of them rushing the game. They do have a proven track record of delivering quality games as a rapid development pace though. Given that they have been developing this game for more than a year and a half already makes me relax a bit. Also, It has been said by many teams (fullauto, warhawk, resistance, and even the darkness team) already that implementing the tilt controller has been extremely easy. I don't think we have anything to worry about come launch for use of the tilt.
