The new Resident Evil video game depicts a white man in what appears to be Africa killing Black people. The Black people are supposed to be zombies and the white manÂ’s job is to destroy them and save humanity....
This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them youngÂ… fearing, hating, and destroying Black people.
Of course, there might be some problems with this complaint. For one thing, since the setting is in Africa, it stands to reason that most of the people in area affected by a viral zombie outbreak would be black. Furthermore, previous Resident Evil games had the protagonists shooting at Americans or Spanish folk, depending on the game's setting, so there shouldn't be an issue of race here: zombification chooses no race. Lastly, a game like this isn't supposed to be meant for "children and young adults;" it's meant for mature audiences.

It was ok for Clair and Jill to light up white zombies all throughout a city, but my god if Chris has to shoot a black zombie, all hell breaks loose.
In all seriousness, people are just looking for racial issues. No one cares about race anymore, black and white aren't even real colors on the color spectrum anyway. So in reality, black and white are the same, end of story.
I knew it would only be a matter of time before someone came with that conclusion.
Simple fact of the matter many times blacks aren't always portrayed in a LOT of games in a none steroetyped, or negative way. With that said...
Capcom in my eyes, is in the clear, because they have had many kinds of "people" in the past in previously RE games being shot at, inclusing white people.
At first given real world events, when i first saw the trailer I was a bit thrown off. It DID make me think of racist thoughts in my mind. But I quicly remembered "Hey this is a RE game set in Africa, and white people in RE4 in another setting were zombies too". And then I didnt care. I just hope a positive blk character pops up somewhere in this adventure. lol
But It's Capcom, and given previouslty RE games, I think this blogger is jumping the gun instead of thinking first. Maybe they havnt played previous RE games. I don't know. But it seems liek a conclusion someone unfamiliar with teh franchise would jump too.
THEN again, if more peopel of color were in games in the first place... then I doubt that we would even be here paying attention to that blog. It's all about counteracting the bad, with enough good. And sadly for most blk characters in games there more former then latter.
While I'll agree this blogger is just overreacting, I will say that if you think "no one cares about race" then you are either stupid, ignorant, living in a fantasy land, or all of the above.
This blogger may have a chip on their shoulders but, just because YOU want to ignore other real life race issues in the world, be my guest. However don't say stupid things that will make you look retarded.
I would also like to point out that many many many other blk people have already confronted the blogger on how silly she was being.

I actually agree (to some extent) with the comments. It may say more about me, (white, mid 20s) but it stood out like a sore thumb that looked like a white western soldier killing endless black savages.
Just add in a black soldier into the team and a couple of white natives then there's no wrong conclusion to be made.

Yes....I can definately see how it might appear to a someone not very familiar with video games. I was taken a bit too at first, but if the setting is in Africa, I would expect to see Africans in the game...zombies or not. I mean, there were Spanish people when it was set in Spain. It just immereses you deeper into the game.
Truth is, we haven't played through the game and can't really pass judgement on a trailer. Rockstar's "Bully", for example was protested to death because, based on the title and the trailer, it was thought to be about bullying. Yet it turned out to be way deeper than that.
Judge a book by it's E3 trailer??? I think I'll wait til all the content is in and I play it before I start bloging about it. Maybe she'll have a stronger argument if she can say she played the game and unlocked all the weapons and costumes, AND the "Jill Valentine Missions" (with no strategy guide).
Well duh, thats the reason why i'm buying the game. I wanna kill these "Africans" (|N|A|G|G|E|R|S |) so bad, that CAPCOM is forcing me to buy an 100" HDTV and an Xbox 360 ELite, hopefully I can get both of these items.... in ceramic white.

A) For every 1 White negative portrayal in media, you have 10+ positive ones. Therefore counteracting any negative thing becaus ethe majority of it is not negative. THEREFORE a negative one will NEVER stand out so much.

My thoughts on this is clearly that they were overreacting. While I recall someone mentioning that most black people in video games aren't portrayed in a positive image. For instance GTA: San Andreas where the main character is black and does everything possible that "society" is against. The thing is games are rarely developed by black people, aside from that these developers are going on the mainstream or current culture in there association of blacks, they're just following the rest of the media. In RE's case they're completely off since as mentioned they've killed every race of human possible. And if you ever played the outbreak series you had a black security guard who was one of the selectable characters. I also agree people do look for anything to pull the race card but I won't be ignorant and say that race isn't still an issue. And all this is coming from someone black.

Hey, check this out, most stereotypes are based on the fact that a majority of the people fitting that stereotype do/are that way. The only problem with stereotyping is that you shouldn't apply it to people right off the bat.
Example; Most inner city schools have a HIGH dropout rate. Most of the people in inner cities are minorities. If you have a large concentration of minorities in an inner city, and over half of them don't graduate high school they may be ignorant/jobless people. Someone visiting said city who interacts with all of these uneducated minorities may come away with a bad impression of said minority group. The problem would be if that person applies what he has learned from a very small population to ALL members of that minority and then spouts out things like, "ALL Yellow people are jobless idiots."
They want to complain about racism in games so damn much so they can hear themselves talk. I say we give them a game with a level of racism never seen before so that they will focus on it instead. calll it negro hunter. that should keep jessie jackson and al sharpton busy for a few days... if they dont kill eachother diving for an open microphone....groups like this make racism worse..most kids today arent racist at all its just these damn groups with political and financial insentives that keep it going.
No one complained when the white protagonist was shooting at spanish zombies in RE4! I'm spanish, but didn't find it offensive, it's just fiction. Maybe it's time we get a different race protagonist....either way people it's just a game!
I could see if an unlockable costume was a white Klan robe and hood, but since its just probably going to be some goofy costume's and maybe Chris' classic RE1 costume, I dont see what the big deal is. We add black people in, some complain, we don't add black people, some complain. I have never complained about a game people I killed white people, I have never seen asian people complain when asians got killed in a game. The Spanish never complained about getting killed in a game.
To be honest, if anything, that women should be happy this game is set in Africa, I would not mind a game being set in Scotland, killing zombies.

You're still missing the point about my reply to him. Its not about whether stereotypes are true or not. Sure some stereotypes are based on truth of the "few". The problem with stereotypes is that ppl begin to take them as facts and thus apply them to the majority. After that it becomes a "Self fufilling prophecy". And Im sure you know what that term means?
Anyways, my point was that in media, for all teh negative stereotypes for whites, there are 10 positive portrayals to counter act any bad ones that come up. That is the key difference. Though RE5 is not one of them, you're foolish to say that it's not likely jp would do it. If you do some research you'd see how some characters in games as late as the PS2 had blk characters edited because JP devs portrayed them in ridiculous ways. ONe game that comes to mind is that Dance game "Bust a Move" , and Heats ending in Bust a Move 2.

Hispanic is not a race. If you look beside Hispanic on that application it says (mark Hispanic regardless of ethnicity). That's why people like David Ortiz are Hispanic and not Black in the US. But in his country he's black. The term Hispanic basically means "Spanish speaking person from North or South America" regardless of their race White, black, brown, whatever. I know Hispanics of 3 different races myself.

If Chris wasn't used in the game and it was like some new black character it wouldn't be a big deal. I didn't see them fight when Kenneth got killed in the beginning of RE1. how is this even a story? who in the hell on this site goes and reads blogs about black women. i would say he/she is not doing their job of looking for gaming news. racism is still around because of people like this. my kids will hear about racism because people like this look for it in every single aspect of their miserable lives, and cry it whenever something does not go exactly how they think it should. it's a truly sad state of affairs. if we left racism to the stupid half wits that still believe in it, it would die out in a generation or so. unfortunately well educated people of some significance continue to make it their sole mission in life to find some unfairness, and then blame it on the color of someone's skin. what a complete waste of time. somehow they don't realize that by making racism a public issue, they are perpetuating it far better than some backwater moron that is truly racist ever could.

This topic comes from a blog of a black women who clearly knows nothing about video games, therefore she has taken what she's seen of RE5 on face value, with no research at all into the previous versions.
If she had seen RE4 and earlier, THEN she would have been able to put version 5 into context. Instead, all she demonstrates is her own ignorance.

And by the way, the whole "zombie" conept is originary from the mithology of a black tribe (I'm sorry i don't know which one, but I know it's black), and then it became popular amongst the white after they enslaved them, thus incorporating to the white mithology an idea that was originary of Africa. Then, if zombies are originally african, then why can't Resident Evil, the best-known zombie vieogame saga, make a release based on this? Shall we put prejudices before both history and enjoyment? Has anyone ever seen the original Night of the Living Dead? Great zombie movie. And guess who is the only survivor? That's right, a black guy. As a white kid from the suburbs, i am ashamed of my race when i hear all those awful comments online... I'd like to think that people are not as racist, as they were back then, but i jmay be wrong. I also agree that little kids should not use the N word or any other similar racist comment, but then u turn on mtv (or BET) and see 2 black guys saying it to each other... If that word is to disappear, no one should say it (doesn't matter what ur race is - just dont use it)

As a Black American I can see the point of why there is such a fuss over Resident Evil 5. I feel this is due to the lack of African American characters in video games. I have been a gamer for the last 20 years and I can't think of 10 game with a primary African American as the main character (I'll give you five Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Vice City Stories, Street of New York, Crackdown, and Suffering.) I am not talking about the back up or friend of the main guy and I am not talking about sport titles or movie titles. When you look at all resident evil games you have a white character killing white characters. Have you ever see a black character kill only white characters (If you can , please name the game?) I feel that if you had more black characters in video games that were postive it would help the game industry. Think about all the hate that has been posted on the board about racism in RE5 (42 pages) now why is their no discussion about african americans role in video games. Even the games that we do star in we are either gangsters (GTA, Saint Row), Criminals (Sufferings) Hip hop artist (Bulletproof, Def Jam) or Athletes (Madden, NBA games). Where are the real hereos for African American? One of my favorite games is Red Dead Revolver, in the game I was so excited that an African American character was in the game. Then they stated his name, it was Buffalo Solidier. He did not even have a name. That is the bull crap that African Americans have to deal with in video games.
