Reeves: PS3's future lies with full-game downloads, Sony to avoid piracy with massive DRM scheme |
Ó
Over in London, Sony reiterated its stance that it believes in the potential of downloadable content to eventually overtake disc-based games. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss David Reeves said a new age is coming within the next few years and that the PlayStation 3 will be in the middle of it.“The disc-based delivery system will fall as the power of the network base rises," he said as he pointed out that 40 percent of PlayStation 3 owners are actively using the PlayStation Network for various purposes. He also cited Gran Turismo HD as a bright example of what can be achieved using this delivery system.
Reeves also underscored user-generated content as a valuable synergy to the grander scheme of things. He earmarked Media Molecule's upcoming title LittleBigPlanet as "only the beginning" in their plans to encourage owners to participate more in growing the platform.
Matters regarding piracy were also tackled by Reeves. He vowed in behalf of Sony that the game industry will not make the same mistakes as the music industry in its transition to the new trends. “This requires a comprehensive DRM solution, which we are working on as a corporation within Sony,” he remarks.
Lastly, Reeves talked about what he thought of the PS3's market performance. Confidently, he stated "the PS3 install base is growing faster than PS2Â’s was at this point in its lifecycle," and added that he expects the console to surpass the 100 million worldwide sales mark churned out by its predecessor, the PlayStation 2.

Then i say good luck, and let's wait for the next DRM decrypter
do they want to develop DRM for the PS3/PS4 ? They PS3 currenty doesn't have DRM and there is no bootloader and no warez for it ...
Interesting that Sony would say this when they are pushing the Blu-Ray disc format.
There is no warez (just about) because of the sheer size of the games. 50 gigs is still too much for the general population to download. I know it's not too much for all, but I would think it is for the majority.
Then transferring that data to the PS3 would take a fair while too.
By having the games downloadable the size would obviously be reduced, makign warez more plausible.
I still don't understand why big companies think that full game downloads filled with DRM are going to work.
The reason that things like paid MP3 download services work is because of the freedom that is included (Also the fact that you can choose which songs you want an not have to buy an entire album). You can put them on multiple devices, make CDs, and back them up to pretty much any format/medium you want.
The infrastructure for huge game downloads is not there. The hard drive space, current average internet speeds, and the DRM that makes it impossible to move your downloads are all stopping points.
Things like Wiiware work because the downloads are small and they games are short and for the moment. If you delete a game, you can download it again for free quickly.
However, users are already complaining about space on the Wii. And what about the future? Can you come back to your Wii 5-10 years after the end of the Wii's software life-cycle and still download your purchased games from Nintendo's servers? I doubt it.
Now how's that going to work out for 10+ gig games?
... Because you could just download the game onto a PC, then use the PC as a proxy to install it on another system.
It would take me about a full week of continuous downloading to get something that size. Also all mechanical hard drives have a service life and a high possibility of failure at some point. I would hate to loose that much data just to have to download it again. Another thing is hard drive size limitations can be an issue. Maybe in the future Sony will allow external drives to download games to.
Yeah my thoughts exactly. Micro$lut said this too a while back when it refused to adopt /adapt the Blue Ray for the 360. Regardless, the future is download content.
I don't think sony is seriously considering this, because if you stop and think about it for 5 minutes, it would never work. You'd be asking everyone who owns a PS3 to run out and buy a big external hard drive to fit all the games they want.
Maybe the PS4 will come out in 6 years with a 10 terabyte hard drive that would make a plan like this feasible, but you can't ask your entire install base to upgrade their machines, nevermind the crazy bandwidth restrictions.
Sure, they'll probably offer more full games online, but the disc-based delivery system is not going to "fall". This is probably just the result of some execs sitting around saying "gee, wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to pay for production and distribution of discs, maybe this new-fangled internet thing can save us from it".
Keep dreaming.
the game stores go bust.
and what about the 40+ gig games?
Kind of an irony that the people that read these types of topics or news are the people who want to pirate the system some more instead of paying for something that might be worth paying for.
if Sony goes that way I hope they do an upgrade to PSN servers...at this speed downloading 30Gb p example would be almost impossible :s
PSP Rootkits! Thanks to the help of Sony Corp, Sony Corp has recently produced a new and improved rootkit aimed directly for the PSP! This means that your games will load faster (or not, we're not sure) and your PSP system memory will double (probably not though) with the added advantage of busting out those naughty pirates!
So get that Network Update ready kids! We'll release 20 or 30 new firmware versions between now and then so that you can have plenty of practice for PSP firmware 34+ Ultra DMA Edition!
You really missed the point
totally off topic and kinda stupid really ironic fail
It's no one's fault but your own that you don't get it. Doesn't make me or my comment any less funny to me or the people who get it. I guess one might say that you are the one who managed to achieve "kinda stupid really ironic fail".
