Real or Fake: Game Boy emulation on the PS3

DUAL SHOCK or SIXAXIS? - Image 1Real or fake? That's the question we're asking you today as our magical research hamsters found something interesting over at the Digital Battle website. It's claiming to be a video showcasing a Game Boy game running on the PS3. The question is: Is it bogus or not?

Here's what gets us about this video. During the opening, you see a short shot of the controller being dangled in front of the screen while playing. The only problem is, the SIXAXIS looks almost like the PS2 controller, and the lighting obscures the actual color of the controller. It could simply have been a PS2 controller dangled in front of the screen. On another note, you can see Linux running in the backlground, but it could just have easily been a computer running Linux to play the game.

Sigh... so, watch the vid and let us know your verdict and why. Is it real or fake?

This could easily be a PS3 running Linux, though I doubt the games were played with a six axis controller. The only problem I have is that the screen looks like it's a 4:3 monitor, or maybe the person just has a dodgy TV. But for me the very quick showing of the PS something controller made me doubt it.

Don't think it was YDL nor Fedora Core 5, It looks like KDE-3.5 but unsure.

Kinda agree with the 4:3 ratio. Kinda big...

Yah, what kind of person would actually just dangle a controller. Cmon, if you're gonna show that GBA Emu is running, your gonna show some proof that 1) you're playing, 2) Show us some footage with you ACTUALLY playing it.

It's possible to play EMU games right now on linux, so I don't see why IT would be THAT far of an idea, but well see...I have gentoo/KDE 3.5 and I haven't experimented with any Emulation as of it...

Hmm, for all we know, it could be just video of a PC running the damn thing as a AVC movie on the Ps3 lol.

Who knows...

Maybe it's VGB http://fms.komkon.org/VGB/

It can run on just about anything these days. As for the controller, it could be just a normal PS2 controller with a USB plug.

# HelloGuest 2007-03-18 01:04
it could easily be ran under linux although the quality of this video and the dangling controller leads you to think its fake

plus that was a game boy color game not gameboy advance!!!!

it can be done under linux i guess but the controller is clearly a ps2 controler not even cloe to looking like a SIXAXIS and does it really even count if it was done under linux?

Wow some of you need to get real. With Linux, you can use a PS2 to USB adapter and use PS2 controllers for emulators.

Thats what Im doing right now with SNEX9X, I can play SNES Games with the PS3 controllers I have.

If they can get a GB emulator to work on Linux, then this is indeed real.

# yea...Guest 2007-03-18 04:20
was just gonna say that, thats how i found out, except i just kept clicking paly/pause repeatedly to move a few frames at a time and noticed the lack of the glass circle thing on the ps3 controller.

# I disagreeGuest 2007-03-18 04:23
I'm not disagreeing with what you say, but if that was the case there would be no point showing the ps2 controller at all. If its for real he cood've went and held up the ps3, and showed the av cables clearly going in the back, reset it watch it boot, then start the game.

I have my GB emulator on YDL since January.

I made a post in the QJ.net forum (ps3 linux) on how to install it.

You can also run mame on PS3 Linux and all capcom arcade games. where were you guys!

And QJ please read your forums sometimes... This is really old news.

this is real. The reason i know that is because i have yellow dog linux on my computer and it has emulators just like this.

it can be easily be done on linux. as for the controller, its probably a psone controller hook up to the usb, and yes you can hook up controllers to the ps3 if you have an usb adapter for it

USB Adapter, there are plenty of them...

So, why do people keep doubting these ?

This is why linux is almost useless on PS3, because 90% of the people who have PS3's have no clue how to use linux.

Here it goes....90% if not all programs that run under linux will run on you PS3, if you know how to "make/install" them...no sorry, no easy little .pbp's to put in a directory....it takes a TINY bit of manual work....but pretty much every emulator should work...

He held it up to show he's playing with a controller I suppose....

Vietone, you seem to know how to "install" something in linux, you should grab some GB emu's and see if they work....

normally i don't flame qj for posting crappy news but this simply is not news at all. GB emulators have been on linux forever. And its obviously running on linux as seen in the tv. and that controller was white so it very well might have even been a psone controller!

As for the shell it has a top menu so it might be GNOME but im not sure. KDE can have its menu on top too.

If you pause the video at a very specific time when he flashes the controller,it doesnt have a ps button, and has the analog button from a ps2 controller.

# why?Guest 2007-03-18 16:24

# It's definitely not a PS3 controller because....Guest 2007-03-18 17:14
There's a wire connected to the controller. But you might be saying it could be a PS3 controller with a USB cable connected to it. Just to make sure, I looked at my PS3 controller and connected the USB cord for it. In the video, it's just a wire, but the USB cord isn't just a wire. There's that silver thing that goes in the controller then there's this rectangular thing with the USB icon and a wire is behind the rectangular thing. So it's either a PS1 or PS2 controller. It probably is a PS1 controller considering it's white. But then there's the aspect that it was the light on the controller. But it'd have to be a really bright light to make it that colour.

# Fake obviously, would be nice thoughGuest 2007-03-18 17:50
This is a fake. Here's why.

If you pause the video when the controller is in front of the camera, you will see no thick plastic dongle that the actual metal USB male adaptor's connectors are housed inside (the one that has the USB icon etched into it on your PS3 USB-mini cord). Furthermore, if you held a PS3 controller up to light you would notice that it is not opaque like normal PS2 controllers; some light actually passes through it, to where you can see the edges of the circuit boards near the corners of the controllers. Being that it was held up between some sort of camera light source AND the television, this would have been plainly visible.

You can test my theory by recording yourself doing the same thing with your PS3 controller (use a flashlight if you have to) and tell me if I'm full of crap, go ahead.

# its linuxxche78x 2007-03-19 02:22
and this news has no wow whatsoever.

since the ps3 can run linux, it can also emulators that linux can run, albeit softmode.

i am not this low as to make a video of something crappy. i would rather wait and see P-A-R-A-D-O-X which will blow any wannabe's dreams of a minute of fame.

# They should doGuest 2007-03-19 05:19
The should coz it comes with it, so you'd need to be really hard up for cash to sell that part of it when you've just spent about $600 (I don't know the US prices btw) on the console.

thats def a dual shock but like people were saying it doesnt matter because it can be used on a ps3 with the right adaptor and stuff. he may have even shown it in the first place to prove two things at once: 1) that he can play gb/gbc games on his ps3 and 2) that he can do it with a ps1/ps2 controler

# That's a DUALSHOCK 2 controller...MrDaBucket 2007-03-19 10:25
Also, if the person wanted people to know that it was real, then they wouldn't quickly dangle a controller in front of a camera as to pass it off as a SIXAXIS.

Anyways, it's either completely fake or just an emulator on Linux.

# Pretty dumbGuest 2007-03-19 11:45
Since the ps3 runs linnux shouldn't be able to run emulators, as long as the ps3 meets the needed specs. This is one reason eveyone wanted linnux, right. By the way I have a usb devise that lets me use my ps2 controller on my cpu, if he had the drivers, and got them to work on linnux he could just plug it to the usb, again n far from impossible.

# 4:3???? its a GAMEBOY EMU!Guest 2007-03-24 21:45
sorry if this has already been said but its only the GAME that is running in 4:3, cos funny enuff, a game boy only has a 4:3 screen, when the linux comes on it is in full screen! y is everyone so quick to judge these things anyway. my only doubt is the controller, not being a SIXAXIS. anyway, i dont care. lmfao!
