Ray Maguire - Image 1GamesIndustry.biz caught up with Ray Maguire to ask his views about the launch of the PS3 in the UK and Europe. Sony's UK Managing Director presents his opinion about the price of a PlayStation 3 unit, the obstacles faced by Sony on retail, media perception on the PS3, and the console competitors of Sony.

Maguire looks at PS3 as the real next-generation with it stepping over the current available so-called next-gen machines and rising as an encompassing entertainment medium. He admires the innovation it took the Sony people to produce the PS3. Maguire also believes that in terms of technical prowess, other consoles clearly don't compare to the PS3.

The PS3 is more expensive in the UK than the rest of Europe. This was because the cost of retail is vastly more in the UK than it is in the US. There are also other considerations, such as shipping costs, import duties, the economic and financial situation in each territory, that add up and make the PS3 more costly in the UK.

The launch of the PS3 is not exactly smooth sailing, but Ray Maguire points out that every launch has its issues, and the PS3 launch cannot be compared to the launch of its competitors. When you're the market leader, Maguire says, you're the biggest target to hit, which may probably be why the PS3 has been subject to a lot of negative happenings in the launch. Besides, he believes that innovation truly carries risk, and when you're not prepared to take risks, there won't be a crown in the end.

Maguire believes that the positive reception to the unveiling of Home and LittleBigPlanet is a turning point in the PlayStation brand being received more positively again. Sounds good, and we here at PS3.QJ.net agrees wholeheartedly, but how about you, what do you think?

"There are also other considerations, such as shipping costs, import duties, the economic and financial situation in each territory, that add up and make the PS3 more costly in the UK." - that may be the case, but im sorry because they dont count for most of the people who want a ps3 15-20 year olds or whatever

PS3 is not the market leader in the next gen console system. That title belongs to XBOX 360 or Wii, so that was a weak excuse for criticism. Secondly, Sony sold the PS3 for more in the UK because it could, not because it should have. Simply put, the PS3 costs more than it's perceived market value, thus people complain and sales are low.

they're obviously referring to being market leaders with respect to ps2, xbox and gcn... that's not too hard to figure out is it?

I'm 27 and have a PS3. Age isn't much of a factor in who's playing video games anymore, and will only continue to be less and less of a factor as gamers grow up and have children of their own.
