Rawr! Sony smash PS3 Rumors!

Sony have dismissed rumours about their cheaper 20GB PS3 today. Previous rumours about the 20GB version included not having Bluetooth support, and the 20GB hard drive not being upgradeable. Sony have came at the rumor mill with all guns blazing, with a Sony spokesperson telling GamesIndustry.biz that "Both configurations will support bluetooth PS3 controllers. The only non-upgradeable feature of the 20GB configuration will be the HDMI output."

This confirms comments made by Sony's Phil Harrison in a recent interview, where he stated: "You can upgrade to whatever size of drive you like. You can put in any drive that you like - it is a computer, after all." The Sony spokesperson also went on to reveal that Sony plans to release accessories for the PS3 that will bring it up to the spec of the 60GB version. Plans for a Wi-Fi adaptor, and a separate adaptor that will allow the use of memory sticks, SD cards and compact flash cards with the machine are in the pipeline.

Sony still haven't commented on whether or not the 20GB PS3 will be coming to the UK. Personally, I don't mind whether it does or not. For me, the 60GB version is the only choice.

» #2 (sorry bout previous post)

At the moment it is not known what distro it is, but I am guessing they will derive it from one of the main ones, such as Debian, Slackware or Ubuntu.

It is not possible to install x86 games on it (i.e. WOW) but the possibility for the release of MMOs that are already on PCs is there and perhaps the two worlds can be integrated....Although hopefully it won't get filled with "PC is better than PS3" and viceversa. THe architecture i.e. the codes that are used to run the programs are different to each other. PCs use x86 (64-bit is x86-64). You can't run Mac games on a PC, because the technology is different. Now that Macs use x86 though you will be able to do so soon on that front.

To run PC games you will most likely need DirectX which is an M$ thing, so obviously Sony won't be using that. Games that use the Id engine (eg. Quake IV) and the UTs are playable in Linux, but the architecture of the PS3 (i.e. the Cell) means that PC games and PS3 games will remain separate.

What he referred to was the size HDD you can have. If you could buy a 160Gb 2.5" HDD then you could stick it in and it would work happily.

I think Sony need to tell everything out straight and stop allowing a number of rumours to build up and then debink it.

Most likely it is an IDE HDD. ATM Sata does not actually give any advantages over IDE (the speed improvement is there, but the HDD technology is not any faster, even the latest raptors!)

This is a 2.5" HDD. Your PC uses a 3.5" HDD. The PS3 is basically using a laptop HDD. Not sure why, perhaps just to fit it on, but Laptop HDDs aren't as fast as normal ones.

» what about usb support

"The Sony spokesperson also went on to reveal that Sony plans to release accessories for the PS3 that will bring it up to the spec of the 60GB version."

I wonder if you can use existing usb devices to read in Sony Memory sticks, or if we will have to buy the special Sony PS3 accessory.

Kaz Hirai stated that you can use any usb card readers. Hopefully they wont chnage that.

» Well once again these rumors are dispelled, thanks for trying MS but your still the least popular

FreakShow not all PC games use DirectX there are many that User OpenGL which Sony is using (well a modified version of it). Games like Quake, WOW and Unreal can be easily ported as long as there is little dependency on the Windows Os and PC architecture as their graphics library is the open one OpenGL.

What you have to remember is that as long as you program to Middleware and not to a specific architecture then it's a lot easier to port or you could even just compile them on another architecture (as long as the required middleware has been written for that system).

It will be possible to run games and applications from Linux only if those applications are not dependent on the architecture (I don't know of any since they are programmed using abstractions languages like C/C++ which hide this). you will however need to recompile them. I have no doubt that many people will compile them on their PS3s and make them available online in no time (I know I'll help out) as binaries for you to simply run. Ohh just imagine all the Linux tools now on your PS3 and part of the network, I cant wait.

With Linux support and Java also making its way to the PS3, mark my words homebrew is going to be huge on the PS3. This is MS biggest fear! I say you boycott games on MS proprietary DirectX library and support OpenGL opened standard.

BTW the reason Game Devs say 360 is easier to develop for is because of DirectX. DirectX is more mature than OpenGL because it is a commercial proprietary library that is highly supported by Microsoft. Now that Sony has embrace OpenGL we should see this great open graphics library flourish. This also means that the PS3 is a lot easier to program for than the PS2 (PS2 used assembly function calls ekk).

» BULL3TPR00F any usb card readers can be used

USB card readers use the same interface and act as a mini external drive. The PS3 like a computer can easily recognize it and be able to browse the drive.

It should be no problem.

This isnt really anything to get excited about and say that xbox got pwnd over it........This is exactly what I thought Sony would do. I didn't like MS releasing the cheaper 360 and I don't like Sony releasing a cheaper PS3. Sony and MS will make more money by doing this, because in the long run it will cost you more to upgrade then it would have been to spend that extra $100.00 and at that price I don't get why peeps wouldn't spend the extra money.

» WHOooaaa

still.. its nice to know that you could put any 2.5" HDD in there and it work

by comedy - 2006-05-16 11:56
» cable

there won't be any cables, laptop (2.5 inch) drives don't connect to cables, they pretty much slot into a plastic thing. looking at the way drives are going i'm pretty confident it'll be sata2.. although 2.5" hdds only really run at 5400 rpm, or 7000rpm if you're paying a lot, i imagine the slot in the ps3 will be compatible with sata2 so that higher speed drives will be compatible in the future. to go for ide would be daft.

still no word on whether i'll be able to use my ps2 mem cards in ps3?

by Mr.Fatman - 2006-05-16 12:23
» HDD

Whats the max memory the ps3 can hold?

PSP is 4gb but what is PS3?

why does everyone believe Microsoft is spreading these rumors? It's probably just Xbox fanboys making up these things.

by Vietone - 2006-05-16 12:57
» Hard Drive Limits?

The PS3 will most likely support any size hard drive as long as its a laptop drive. So 100GB+ would be assumed.

the PSP can support higher sizes but only in a future firmware update. Sony announced 8GB duos that will be released sometime in the future. Probably gonna switch from a FAT16 to FAT32 partition.

by yepsz - 2006-05-16 13:44
» even if the hdd is limmited

even if ps3 is limmited on hdd size, sony can just release a new ps3 firmware raising the max hdd size.

» Can someone help me? I'm confused about some things...

So like, would you be able to run MS word, powerpoint, computer games, etc. on the PS3?

by ... - 2006-05-16 14:39
» NO

^^^ NO you wont. Those would require a windows OS. The PS3 will have a linux OS.

by Vietone - 2006-05-16 14:58
» But

But you would be able to run the linux equivalence if they can be installed.

by The Unbiased One - 2006-05-16 16:21
» Hurray

Some good news coming from Sony, my faith has been restored in them. Not that I wasn't going to get a PS3, but I feel much more comfortable now that I can get the 20 gig one.

by soapinmouth - 2006-05-16 16:31
» um...

i dont think it means an computor hard drive, i think they mean any size ps3 hard drive.

by comedy - 2006-05-17 01:30
» ps3 hdd is 2.5inch hdd

that is a laptop drive. which are now pushing 200gigs plus.

yeah, directx is microsoft's and so you can't use it on anything but windows. if a game supports opengl then you can use it on linux etc... but good luck finding many of them.

» #1's post it my favorite

first of all: pwnd!!!!! ? oh man youre l33tz0r. put your headset back on and get back to your twentieth game of counter strike today, only taking a break to rub one to anime and bash xbox/wii on qj.

second of all: setting rumors straight isnt doing anything. sell the console! lets look at this in another light:

lets imagine that you say "i totally slept with your mom last night" but as you say it to me, im nailing YOUR mom that very moment! actions buddy... actions speak (and sometimes moan) louder than words.

by Gaming Expert - 2006-05-17 07:59
» Unfortunate

I understand most of your's enthusiasm, but it wasn't M$ that started the rumors, it was news blogs sites such as this.

So can I take it from this that any rumour Sony hasn't squashed is true? Multiplayer = $$$?

I would also question the timing of when these "assessories" will be released. It's easy to debunk a question, its harder to make good on it.
