Rage's hindered development is Xbox 360's fault |

Fans eagerly awaiting id Software's Rage (PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360)will most likely be not very happy with Microsoft's Xbox 360. That's because lead designer Tim Willits has revealed in his Austin Games Developers Conference discussion that it is the console's fault why they had to cut back on Rage's content.According to him, the 6 to 8 GB data capacity of the Xbox 360 has significantly hindered the developing team from putting in content which they have originally intended. The plan was to feature several wastelands, but instead, because of the limitation on the unit's disc storage, they had to trim it down to a measly two. These then are split into multiple instances.
Says Willits,
The PC is limitless in the amount of data you can put on it. The PS3 has about 25GB. But the Xbox 360 roughly has 6 to 8 GB of data. We're hoping we can squeeze the game down to two discs for the 360 version.
Major suxors, right? But even worse is that although the PC and the PS3 are more than capable of handling all the wastelands they could want to include, they had to apply the cut across the board. He says further, "I wouldn't say the overall story was changed in any way in order to fit on the Xbox 360 version, but how the player experiences Rage's story has been altered."
That certainly explains why John Carmack has stated earlier that the Xbox 360 version of the game will be the worse among all platforms.
Looks like it's not just the price cuts that Microsoft should be busying themselves with now, but probably increased disc storage to accommodate development. Is this but a sign of things to come for the Xbox 360?

Multi-platform games, should be confined to those where the experience won't be dampened by one instance of the game.

so why dont these devs just wait for the fall update and make a 2 disc set for the 360 (installation disc and play disc)??

the ps3 and pc versions shouldn't suffer because of the 360 limitations.
if anything just add another disc, make the 360 user swap one more disc...
eh, i've questioned Id's moves since quake 3...

i think all games should be as good as they can on a given console.
i would much rather play a game on ps3 b/c it looks better or has more content, than just because it wasn't made for the 360.
i see exclusives as bad for the gamer. focusing on one console can make for a better game, however other consoles shouldn't be ignored, they all have their strong suits...

Wow, just wow.

Now, most games don't take even close to full advantage of the storage on a Blu-ray, so this won't be a problem in every instance. Still, it's going to become increasingly common.

I'll be passing on this game.
The game didn't even look good to begin with so that's probably why they did it cause they knew (like most other people) that their game is garbage.

Come christmas there are going to be lot's of people getting the super cheap 360 arcade....with no harddrive...

The 360 is at its peak right now, in terms of innovation and such. Microsoft should either adopt HD-DVD as its new proprietary format and continue selling the drives at a lower price, or get to work on Xbox 3.
If they want to avoid this problem in the future, their next console needs to be a modular, standardized PC running a variant of Vista or its successor.

That alone is what justifies the reason on why xbox needs leave. hddvd wudve been fine ms! then both 360 and ps3 owners wudnt have to fight.
neither of us were sure, but ps3 fans were right all along. We pretty much followed logic.

think hes Carmack. they said they needed at least 3 disc for it to match PS3 quality(texture res)

Sony may have wanted bluray to win but they also wanted devs to really expand on there games diversity for us gamers.
Might MS's cruel decision on DVD AAAAND no HDD just makes devs and gamers suffer last gen sized games.
