Rage's hindered development is Xbox 360's fault |
Ó
Fans eagerly awaiting id Software's Rage (PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360)will most likely be not very happy with Microsoft's Xbox 360. That's because lead designer Tim Willits has revealed in his Austin Games Developers Conference discussion that it is the console's fault why they had to cut back on Rage's content.According to him, the 6 to 8 GB data capacity of the Xbox 360 has significantly hindered the developing team from putting in content which they have originally intended. The plan was to feature several wastelands, but instead, because of the limitation on the unit's disc storage, they had to trim it down to a measly two. These then are split into multiple instances.
Says Willits,
The PC is limitless in the amount of data you can put on it. The PS3 has about 25GB. But the Xbox 360 roughly has 6 to 8 GB of data. We're hoping we can squeeze the game down to two discs for the 360 version.
Major suxors, right? But even worse is that although the PC and the PS3 are more than capable of handling all the wastelands they could want to include, they had to apply the cut across the board. He says further, "I wouldn't say the overall story was changed in any way in order to fit on the Xbox 360 version, but how the player experiences Rage's story has been altered."
That certainly explains why John Carmack has stated earlier that the Xbox 360 version of the game will be the worse among all platforms.
Looks like it's not just the price cuts that Microsoft should be busying themselves with now, but probably increased disc storage to accommodate development. Is this but a sign of things to come for the Xbox 360?

I think that yes, this is a sign of things to come for the 360. It's inevitable that as the life cycles of the systems increase, developers will continue to push the envelope with larger and larger games. As everything is now going multi-platform, developers will inevitably be forced to make cuts to fit on the tiny 360 storage medium.
That's why exclusives are still important, and that's why MGS4 is as good as it is. If a company has a vision of a game they want to make, they should work out what resources are going to be necessary, and, as such, select the appropriate format.
Multi-platform games, should be confined to those where the experience won't be dampened by one instance of the game.
the new 360 fall update is gonna allow some contents of the games to be stored inside the harddrive so it doesnt have to read everything from the disc.. this will lead to faster load times and bigger games for the 360 and storage wont be a problem anymore (unless you run out of harddrive space.. yikes)..
so why dont these devs just wait for the fall update and make a 2 disc set for the 360 (installation disc and play disc)??
so what is wrong with 3 discs?
the ps3 and pc versions shouldn't suffer because of the 360 limitations.
if anything just add another disc, make the 360 user swap one more disc...
eh, i've questioned Id's moves since quake 3...
i don't agree...
i think all games should be as good as they can on a given console.
i would much rather play a game on ps3 b/c it looks better or has more content, than just because it wasn't made for the 360.
i see exclusives as bad for the gamer. focusing on one console can make for a better game, however other consoles shouldn't be ignored, they all have their strong suits...
I thought they were going to figure out something for the 360 version instead of effing the other version! GRRR
I thought disc-swaping was a thing of the past! I'm not flaming, I seriously thought it was gone to console gaming!
Wow, just wow.
Still, a 360 DVD holds only 1/4-1/3 of what a Blu-ray can hold. Installing 2 or 3 GB on a 360 HD will not come close to closing the gap in storage on the two mediums.
Now, most games don't take even close to full advantage of the storage on a Blu-ray, so this won't be a problem in every instance. Still, it's going to become increasingly common.
Looks like fans won't be eagerly waiting this mediocre game now. I guess the devs wanted this to be a bargain bin game that people still wouldn't pick up after it dropped in price.
I'll be passing on this game.
The game didn't even look good to begin with so that's probably why they did it cause they knew (like most other people) that their game is garbage.
developers cannot do this is because not everyone that owns a 360 has a Harddrive, this is a big problem for lots of devs...
Come christmas there are going to be lot's of people getting the super cheap 360 arcade....with no harddrive...
...Blue Dragon was 3 disks...
The 360 is at its peak right now, in terms of innovation and such. Microsoft should either adopt HD-DVD as its new proprietary format and continue selling the drives at a lower price, or get to work on Xbox 3.
If they want to avoid this problem in the future, their next console needs to be a modular, standardized PC running a variant of Vista or its successor.
im pretty sure these devs are going to use up all 25gb, probly 17-19gb.. if this game is going to be that good they would go dual layer and use 50gbs.. haha
So true... truely true true
All of a sudden it's mediocre because the 360 version is the worst? Cry me a river. Obviously you and other must not realize this is a game being created by some FPS Legends. Any chance of sucking at all is between slim and nill. Nice job bashing it when you have barely seen anything of it as well.
MS was after your money, wanted to make a quick buck by not integrating a higher storeage disc which equaled cheap price.
That alone is what justifies the reason on why xbox needs leave. hddvd wudve been fine ms! then both 360 and ps3 owners wudnt have to fight.
neither of us were sure, but ps3 fans were right all along. We pretty much followed logic.
complained about storage after realising MS charge fees for the 3rd DISC.
think hes Carmack. they said they needed at least 3 disc for it to match PS3 quality(texture res)
nuff said
MS was ever interested in the increasing expansion of games. Did they really say to themselves, "f*ck it, so what?"
Sony may have wanted bluray to win but they also wanted devs to really expand on there games diversity for us gamers.
Might MS's cruel decision on DVD AAAAND no HDD just makes devs and gamers suffer last gen sized games.
Ah well other gamers must suffer cutback,s setback, delays (im looking at you ff13 delayed due to crapbox) and this problem i can only see escalating and is m$ own problem going dvd. Just dont understand why other consoles , pc,s have to wait and suffer dumbed down - delayed games a load of b.s if u ask me.
HD-DVD is dead, why would M$ would pick it up??
And the fact that they still have to get it to you, which means it still has to go on the disc! And those of us (most of us) with a 20 gig hard drive are pretty much full by now and refuse to pay 220 bucks for a stupid 120 gig HDD when i can get a regular 120 gig HDD without the plastic for less then 50 bucks.
@nyr2k2: Actually, a Blu-Ray can hold up to 50GBs, so 5 Times the size given the fact that you use Dual-layer. You also used a DL-DVD as example, so let's be fair.
Must have missed several news-updates lately,
Where did that innovation thing take place with MS ?
I don't really see any innovation from them...
and give hard drive options to the people who have it. more and more games need hd storage, especially for big games like rage. they already cut the texture res for 360 version, and now they are making the ps3 and pc versions smaller to match the 360 version? this is a poor deal for anyone without a 360, or even people with a 360 elite that have a decent hard drive.
you know what M$ SHOULD really do, make it so that a completely normal sata drive could upgrade the smaller harddrive consoles like ps3
