Rage won't work well on three DVDs but Doom 4 will, says Carmack

Rage - Image 1

Last year, id Software generated some... rage for the shooter/racer hybrid Rage when the issue of the Xbox 360 version being gimped due to the lack of disk space cropped up. id has since clarified that the decision to split Rage's 360 version over two discs hasn't gimped it in any way.

But why only two? They would have been able to fit in more textures if they went with three DVDs, right? Perhaps, but id co-founder John Carmack says that the nature of the game doesn't allow for it to be spread across three DVDs.

We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVDs, which is about the right mix, but the game justÂ…we canÂ’t cut it into a third like that. We can cut it into two pieces. WeÂ’ve got two large wastelands on there. We just couldnÂ’t make an arbitrary cut.

Although the two large wastelands featured in Rage requires a two-disc split, Doom 4, on the other hand, will not have the same restrictions.

Doom 4 is being set up so that itÂ’s almost certainly going to be cut up to 3 DVDs versus one Blu-ray. At least theyÂ’ve got the ability because of the way itÂ’s structured.

Rage is currently scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 next year. No target launch has yet been announced for Doom 4.

Actually I'm not a fanboy, I just hate Microsoft with a passion and like getting the message out there whenever possible.

Actually this is good thing for xbox if it has 2 disks=more content. This will ELIMINATE the disk storage problem for xbox.and it might even make rockstar make agent for xbox too (wishfull thinking). I just hope that we can install the 2nd disk. kind of like pc where you install the 2nd disk and play with the first disk inside

And the guy above me thinks its a bad thing LOL

If you read, 2 disc will suck(graphicall y) for the 360. A 500GB HDD will be worth as much as the system alone.

Seriously I would understand disc swapping for RPGs but it's kind of dumb for racing games(Forza will have 2 discs) and FPS. This would have been okay if the 360 could use SATA HDD. Oh well, times like these it's good to have both systems.

I couldn't care less how many discs the X360 version uses unless it starts to gimp the other platforms.

Since we install our games and softwares and don't require the inserting of disks, it really doesn't matter to us PC users either way. We even have blu-ray drives for cheap, though nobody buys them cept for storage.

» You're just as bad

It doesn't matter whether it's obsessive love for one company, or obsessive hate, you're no better than fanboys.

Not saying to love them all, I loathe Sony, it'd be hypocritical. You don't need to say it every time they're mentioned though, it just gets irritating.

I bet you don't remember who invented the disk swapping game console in the first place?

Why it was the same company that brought you the disk console in the first place - The Sony Playstation 1!

Who really cares about how many discs it takes. I for one do not because I rarely make it to the second one. But I will make it threw doom cause that will be the stuff right there.

xbox is hindering the full potential of great games because of its storage problem...i just pray to got the new metal gear doesnt get caught in the drift...hell, if its half as good as mgs4 it will be a good game. i still cant believe mgs4 wasnt GOTY it should have been game of the decade if u ask me

You make it sound like you presume I'm gonna defend MS about this. No, I don't like this either, how can an open world game be on 2 discs? I don't get how Forza 3 will work on 2 discs either. Hopefully you can install the second disc and never actually need to put it in the tray or something. I really don't mind disc swapping in games where it doesn't interfere with the flow, but I can't figure how they're gonna make this work with an open-world shooter/racer like Rage

Your pointless MS hate still makes you look like an idiot tho lol

» a 500GB laptop hard drive from

newegg.com costs about $99 which is what the 360 uses in a proprietary enclosure and what most PS3 users use to replace their Hard Drive. Now $99 for the actual harddrive translates to somewhere above $500 for Microsoft to put it in their special enclosure.

by phiyuku - 2009-07-21 09:17
» It started way before then

doesn't anyone remember that people had to change floppys during installation. One game could take up to 100 floppys. What sucks is you have to sit there changing it every second or so due to the crappy storage space of floppys.

The company hasn't mattered since Quake III.

Don't get me wrong. I loved Doom III, Quake IV, Quake Wars (really not an id, thing, I know), etc., but these games have had so little impact on modern gaming that it's ridiculous to pay attention to anything id says.

Give us a video showing AWESOME gameplay and not advertisements for your engine, and maybe I'll change my tune.

» 1 Blu-ray + More content than 5 Dual-layer DVD's

And even if they used only a 25gb Blu-ray, it would be nearly as much as 3 full dual-layer DVD's. So maybe you'll have to enlighten me about how 2 disks (DVD's) + more content.

Once the game was installed you didn't have to look at the floppies again though.

I think this guy meant the first CD based system that made you change discs......

This is also why Sony was smart and used DVD's for their next system, you know, upgrade to the newest and biggest storage medium for your new system.....unlike some companies.

Well even though ID software isn't making huge hits, you cannot dismiss what John Carmack says.

He is a legendary programmer and is not afraid to call things as he see's it. He was the lead programmer on all the games that DID change the course of video games (wolfenstein and doom mainly then quake later on) and hasn't stopped programming since.

I'd say his word is basically video game programming gospel....

and have you seen what the RAGE engine can do ? It looks amazing, but yes, looks aren't everything.

However, they are to a programmer as it's their job to get things running as best as possible on the machines at hand...not worry about gameplay mechanics. That is what the game designers do.

The install times for each mission of MGS4 take longer then swapping out a disk. :sax:

All the fanboy rage is nuts. I've got both systems and I get any game I don't plan on playing online for PS3 except for a few exceptions (like fighters) but now it seems like games will start taking advantage of the storage size of Blu-ray discs which is bound to become a deciding factor for me.

If you ask me, there would be no reason to buy a 360 if the PS3 had a price drop since the two systems have little differences (for now) and most games are available for both. Apparently Sony doesn't know that though and is satisfied with sub par sales. Whatever, let the videogame companies compete, the gamers win. But the internet loses when some chump falls in love or hate with one company or another and then posts about that love/hate any and everywhere possible.

True

We should be happy that the companies are competing it give US more quality. but the fanboys are the problem.

With the comment about MGS4 taking longer for the install to happen, than disc swapping in games...

If the 360 would've gotten MGS4, it would've been after the new Xbox Experience went into effect. My point being a game of that size would've been on mulitple discs AND the 360 would've had an install time on top of it too. MEANING, you'd have to go back to your dashboard when you're ready for the second disc if it's installed already, which presumably it wouldn't be, cause it'd waste space having a second disc that you don't know when you're gonna need it. So if you're going to bring MGS4 into it, remember where you're coming from. Not to mention the fact that if you only have to install MGS4 once and its 8 mins. then it's 4 mins 3 more times. SO, that only adds up to about half an hour, and then the game is over. The amount of time it would take you to swap the discs, cause there'd be about 3-4, would be almost agonizing cause you'd have to install entire DVD-9's individually. I hope everybody followed that.

» Gotcha...

I was able to follow what you said after a few reads, and I can understand what you are saying. I personally own both, and would like it if the 360 could have larger disc storage so that the games could do and have more, seeing as to how most developers seem to be developing for 360, then both systems would benefit. Right?
