Street Fighter III 3rd Strike
Justin Wong vs. Jimmy Tran
As one of the favorites to score big in Evo 2009, Justin Wong made a bold claim that he's going home with three Evo championships this year. No doubt he's got the skills and the creds to back that up, but the feat has never been done before in Evo. Will he make it? This is his first attempt at that self-set goal, and standing in his way is another big name in the scene - Jimmy Tran.
Champion: Justin Wong
Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion
Rip vs. ChetChetty
Now this beats any trailer or gameplay vid we've seen for Tekken 6 (PS3, Xbox 360, PSP) so far. This one's got real pros manning the controllers, and not just any pros - these are the guys who came out on top of their respective brackets. From the Evo Championship Series in Las Vegas, this is the final match for the event's Tekken 6 category - it's Rip with his favorite, Law, and ChetChetty once again goes with Paul Phoenix.
Champion: Rip
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Justin Wong vs. Sanford Kelly
Justin Wong was certainly firing at all cylinders as he showed his versatility in this year's Evo Championship Series. In his second final match of the event, the beast of fighting games got down on the floor and took on one of the tourney favorites, Sanford Kelly, who put him in the losers' bracket earlier during the tourney. The finals of the Evo 2009 Marvel vs. Capcom 2 tourney coming right up.
Champion: Sanford Kelly
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
John Choi vs. Afrolegends
After disposing of their high-profile opponents in the semis, John Choi and Afrolegends squared off in the final of Evo 2009's Super Street Fighter II HD Remix event. The finals saw another Ryu (Choi) vs. Balrog (Afrolegends) bout, but this match shows how two great masters play mind games as they try to outfake and outpredict each other's moves.
Champion: Afrolegends
Street Fighter IV
Daigo Umehara vs. Justin Wong
If you consider yourself a Street Fighter fan, then there's no way you should miss this one, especially if you already missed the live stream yesterday. It's the final match of the Evo 2009 Street Fighter IV (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360) event between two of the tourney's biggest names: Ryu master and SF legend Daigo Umehara, and the beast known as Justin Wong. The event saved the best for last - this fight was the best fight of the entire tourney.
Champion: Daigo Umehara
It looks like Justin Wong didn't manage to win three Evo 2009 championships like he said he would, although major props goes to him for coming close. He did get 3rd Strike, and he did manage to reach the finals of MvC2 and SF4. Unfortunately for him, Sanford and Daigo are just too good at what they do.
That wraps it up for Evo 2009, I'm sure we'll see familiar faces again next year, and here's to hoping it tops this year's stellar outcome.
