PSXLoader: experimental PS2 homebrew loader for the PS3 |

QJ.NET Forums member kompas has pointed us towards an experimental PS2 homebrew loader for the Sony PlayStation 3 developed by PS2 homebrew developer Hermes.
The app is called PSXLoader. It's still very much in the preliminary stages of development and can only be used to run Hermes' Guitarfun and PS2Reality Mediaplayer homebrew apps. The developer is already working on a new GUI, though, so we can probably expect more features in the coming days.
To run PSXLoader, you'll need PS3 firmware 1.90 and version 3.6 of the Swap Magic PS2 modchip. You'll also need a few files from the PS2 bios, but those haven't been included in the download for the usual law-based reasons.

...I suppose it'll take at least 1-2 years "from now" before the ps3 gets hacked.... bah, I suppose it's good. I mean, the ps2 was good since nobody had chips at the start. I hope the the ps3 won't get hacked till it's about half of it's time, so I would have bought enough games (I don't wanna feel too cheap, lol).
This seems pointless to me. For anyone that wants the newest features (such as HOME) these things will never work. The firmware requirements are so specific that they are easily thwarted.
This doesn't seem worth it. Getting PS2 bios files seems like a nightmare in itself. I remember going through hell to get that gba bios file for the PSP gba emulator. Then a modchip is also needed? Or just a disc? Yeah I'll pass.
I can't wait until it's fully exploitable so that the bgreat homebrews can fill up the PS3 scene!!
the PS3 was built with anti hombrew in mind, it will rake a very long time to get real hombrew running. if at all
What is so great about homebrew? I downgraded my psp to try out some of the fabled `great homebrew` and...what`s the point? It`s so amateurish.
I`ve got a next gen console, so I want next-gen games...not a homebrew version of tetris or emulators to run 10-15 year old games.

thats not all you can do with hombrew, you can also use it to make a gameshark style cheat device
why not just play the game? Why cheat? What`s the point?
I like playing classic games on my PSP. Many of them are better than the new ones and they're FREE.

I take it from `free` classic games you mean illegally downloaded roms?
Also, the PSP does not come with any built-in Sony games as far as I`m aware...had mine for 12 months and still not found one
Your comment is unfounded. As with every system it's completely legal to have a back up of games you own. Per say like those 100 NES games you bought on E-Bay for 20 bucks. Better yet is the fact that some games especially from companies who have since shut down are now considered freeware and are not illegal to download and use. But hey you may be right, maybe he doesn't own the game....Good thing it's still legal to download some roms and use it for up to 24 hours without breaking any laws.

Apps stands for applications, not games. Applications like the numerous music players that have better compatability than the sony option, which lacks the unique gui and ID tag idenification support that those homebrew applications provide.
It's legal to have backups of games you own but also ripped YOURSELF. Downloaded roms are still illegal, even if you own the game.
