Wipeout for the PlayStation One, developed by Psygnosis - Image 1Owners of a Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PlayStation Portable (PSP) may want to keep both on hand for this news bit, which announces the original Wipeout racing video game for the PSOne has now been made available for download at the PlayStation Store, accessible via PlayStation Network.

In case you're wondering why this game's worth it, it's interesting to note that this game was the first Wipeout title by Psygnosis, and was also part of the September 29, 1995 launch of the PlayStation 1 in Europe. On that note, this was also the first non-Japanese game for the PSOne - guys may remember this game from their (PSOne) demo disc which comes with the console.

The game itself puts players behind the controls of an anti-gravity craft in the F3600 racing league. Here, players can pilot multiple ships with varying characteristics (top speed, acceleration, turn radius, etc.) as they combat other racers on the game's high-G tracks. There's also the noted collection of power-ups like shields and missiles, which may remind some of Mario Kart - although Wipeout is definitely set for a significantly older gamer age range (despite its E rating).

The classic racer will cost US$ 5.99 on download, and should complement your copy of Wipeout Pure nicely.

» Who's the genius at Sony

Wipeout is already available on UMD. As are:

-Tekken

-Medevil

-Hot Shots Golf

I may even be missing a few. Why don't they make games that aren't already available as PSP games?

» You the genius

In case you didn't know, those games you mentioned are not direct ports. They are additions to the series, but not direct ports.

That's like saying Super Mario Bros. is the exact same as New Super Mario Bros. Haha... no.

» Frustration

The first WipEout was a pretty frustrating, unforgiving experience, as far as I can remember. Only in 2097 did they let you touch the walls without immediately grinding to a halt.
