The long wait is over folks as homebrew coder extraordinaire Mathieulh and his team releases PSGroove, "an open source reimplementation of the PS JailBreak exploit for AT90USB and related microcontrollers."

But before you proceed folks, make sure you know what you are doing as this is totally a do-it-yourself method. You'll also need to purchase a small board, either the Teensy++ USB Development Board or AT90USBKEY, to jailbreak your console although some reports now claim that the code can also be ported to the PSP and TI-84 Plus Calculator.

Developer's note:

This is the PSGroove, an open-source reimplementation of the psjailbreak exploit for AT90USB and related microcontrollers.

It should work on:

AT90USB162
AT90USB646
AT90USB647
AT90USB1286
AT90USB1287
ATMEGA32U4
… and maybe more.

This software is not intended to enable piracy, and such features have been disabled. This software is intended to allow the execution of unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3.

Cloning
The repository uses the LUFA library as a submodule. To clone, use something like:

git clone git://github.com/psgroove/psgroove.git
cd psgroove
git submodule init
git submodule update

Configuring
Chip and board selection can usually be handled in the Makefile. In particular, update the MCU, BOARD, and F_CPU lines. Suggested values:

Teensy 1.0:
MCU = at90usb162
BOARD = TEENSY
F_CLOCK = 16000000

Teensy++ 1.0:
MCU = at90usb646
BOARD = TEENSY
F_CLOCK = 16000000

Teensy 2.0:
MCU = atmega32u4
BOARD = TEENSY
F_CLOCK = 16000000

Teensy++ 2.0:
MCU = at90usb1286
BOARD = TEENSY
F_CLOCK = 16000000

AT90USBKEY / AT90USBKEY2:
MCU = at90usb1287
BOARD = USBKEY
F_CLOCK = 8000000

Board-specific notes
Teensy boards only have one LED, so it will turn off when the exploit succeeds rather than turn green. Older Teensy 1.0 boards also have the polarity inverted. In general, a LED should do something when the board is powered, and do something different when theexploit works.

Building
On Linux, use the AVR GCC toolchain (Debian/Ubuntu package: gcc-avr). On Windows, WinAVR should do the trick.

make clean
make

Programming
Now program psgroove.hex into your board and you're ready to go. For the AT90USBKEY and other chips with a DFU bootloader preinstalled, you can get the dfu-programmer tool, put your board in programming mode, and run

make dfu

For the Teensy boards, you probably have to use the Teensy Loader software.

Using
To use this exploit:

• Hard power cycle your PS3 (using the switch in back, or unplug it)
• Plug the dongle into your PS3.
• Press the PS3 power button, followed quickly by the eject button.

After a few seconds, the first LED on your dongle should light up. After about 5 seconds, the second LED will light up (or the LED will just go off, if you only have one). This means theexploit worked! You can see the new "Install Package Files" menu option in the game menu.

Notes
A programmed dongle won't enumerate properly on a PC, so don't worry about that.

This software is not intended to enable piracy, and such features have been disabled. This software is intended to allow the execution of unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3.

For more info about the release, please visit the PSGroove Git Repository below.

Big thanks to andrew and arranon for the head's up!

You still need to by the right type of dongle and that can cost you about the same as if you get the x3jailbreak clone.

Maybe a emulated version of this can be placed on the PSP :D

That and a pre-built binary rather then un-compiled Code.

to my understanding it would be illegal to distribute the binary, but not the source code like you see in this release. (i may be wrong, though)

Is a usb Micro Controller. its not really something you install on a ps3 you plug it in a usb slot. the only thing you install is the code onto the programmer from a pc using a program you get with it.

ok shouldn't really judge a person by typos. a depressed fat guy would rather sit and use a remote instead of getting up to to change the channel. (see how it relates changeing the iso being loaded instead of getting up to change discs.)

He has a point. 99% of pirates are over weight due to lazyness, inactivity. Also studies have shown that people that pirate or prefer digital content over physical content. Something I may add does anyone know how a blu-re is made? And did anyone know that the disc is perfected with a special anti-scratch film? Something to keep in mind when you throw out a reason as to why you would prefer using a back up of a disc. Same goes with the un-noticable speed increase of load times.

well im sorry to break that dudes study but i know quite a few ppl who pirate games, ...they actually go to the same gym as me and you will never guess what they must be part of your 1% coz they certainly arnt overweight, far from it infact truth is quite a few gamers are overweight same as quite a few human's are overweight but your guesstimates are way off

Dang. If I had known this I would have started to develop some homebrew since I don't care about piracy.

the free ps3sdk is barely usable yet.

backup manager was done with official sony ps3 sdk, which is a bit illegal, and might justify sony's lawsuit.

but, since there is finally a way to explore the xmb, i think we can see ps3sdk development speed up, and then we can hope for some initial homebrew.

Thats what i'm talkin about and THats what i like to hear. (or read) 2 things on my list that i want to see 9might work with trying to implement) a sega emulator (with kick butt filters ya know give it the hd kinda look no pixely look) and a ps2 emulator yes for people that don't have the classic release model ps3 with the emotion chip installed.

The PS3 was capable of emulating the ps2 at more than 30 fps do you not think Sony would have jumped on that marketing opportunity? They would be rereleasing ps2 games like hotcakes.

The ps3 is worse at ps2 emulation than most dual core pc's, without the emotion engune's hardware acceleration it is frankly nearly impossible without some serious programming talent, even on a Devkit

thats true but the emulator they have for the older ps3's was removed and sucks sitting here w/o ps2 support with ps2 games (i have no place to talk i have the release 60GB with the emotion engine running full hdmi output 1080p upgraded hard drive from 60>160>300gb because i have alot of media videos music and dlc.)

I got the money burning a hole in my pocket to buy a Ps3 but i'm not buying one if this only works for backups or very basic emulators, i mean my 360 can play backups but it's just sitting there gathering dust most days. This has to at minimum emulate N64 before i'll throw 250 of my hard earned £'s at it.

you got a point right there the ps3 should be fully capable of emulating an n64, but with that being said two hardest emulators to get to work are the ps2 and the n64. damn emotion enging and reality simulation processors

# mmmemcp66 2010-09-01 15:28
actually

the saturn and dreamcast is usually considered more difficult to emulate (it really depends on the difference of hardware, and i believe saturn had pretty unusual hardware)

also if you want something which can play n64

http://openpandora.org/

it can currently run psx and n64 pretty well, although it was more a direct port, and alot of optimisation is needed

so we should get some pretty good results

mines is finally in the post after 2 years of waiting, second batch is starting in october

also a JB IPOD/IPHONE
may beable to play N64, and for controls

That's why i said minimum of N64 emulation, because my Xbox 1 can emulate everything upto that and my 360 can run the new games, so for me to justify the purchase of Ps3 it has to take up where the Xbox 1 emulation left off then things like Dreamcast emulation is just something extra to look forward to.

well there is a DC emulator made for the wii but never released(the dev is picky i don't blame em) but for the ps3 that would be epic. and seeings the n64 emulation is at 95% full speed on the psp porting it to it's mother system would make things literally wake up.

the ps3 is now a ps3, the early models had ps2 hardware, then it was replaced with software

so someone is going to have to create a decent emulator, which hasnt been done on the pc for years soooooooo

there is technicly the alt method. and thats the swap magic trick with ps2 data on the ps3. installing the iso loader and all and running it that way. but one implemented into the ps3 as an emulation for people w/o the emotion engine would be nice watch ps3 sales skyrocket.

Don't forget that great developers like DA and others have been driven off because some idiots do nothing but whine and complain about "you didn't add this, you didn't make it how I wanted!" show some appreciation instead of endlessly complaining please, for the sake of the community.

Tell them you were having problems with the website and they will transfer you(office order minimum is $100). They are only $2.65 a piece, ground shipping to my house was $8.00. They said they had about 500 left at that time so jump on it now!

You understand thats just for the processor? You will need to assemble it into a USB key, its surface mount so you will need quite a lot of PCB making skills and equipment, plus all the addition parts such as the USB connector, resistor, capacitors diodes.

Excellent work Mathieulh! I admire his morals, no piracy, open source, ect.. Glad to see the PSP scene is bleeding over to PS3 (in the best way possible!)

Sony can be preparing their very first PS3 ban wave, ouch, I don't want to loose my free online gaming for anything.

Still I wish I could use homebrew without the fear of getting banned. :sigh:

so um, disable the internet connection while you have the NON-PERMANENT modchip/USBkey inserted to play homebrew, then UNPLUG IT and re-enable the internet connection, go back online and play!

what are people crying about bans for, only pirates are going to get banned. If you actually own the game you dont need this key inserted to play, so dont steal games and you wont get banned. play your homebrew OFFLINE, and you also wont get banned. It almost seems like this very simple thought was harder to come up with than the ps3jailbreak itself was.

# Compressionsymbal 2010-09-03 19:57
Just thinking, does anyone know what sort of percentage you can compress an average Ps3 game? I don't want to keep buying HDD's to store them all, so i want to compress and split to archive on dvd and only keep the main used games on HDD, but would for example a 12gb game compress down to fit a dual layer dvd.

Can I uninstall PS Jailbreak? or can I just boot my PS3 without the USB modchip so I can play online multiplayer with no worries of getting banned?. I'm thinking of playing a backup-ed(?) singleplayer game using PS Jailbreak and playing multiplayer games using my original disc without the jailbreak. I hope you understand what I'm saying.

unplug jailbreak and your PS3 is a stock PS3 again. that is all, NO PERMANENT INSTALLS.

plugged in = installed.
unplugged = not installed.

thats what im getting out of all of this.

There have been ports to phones, the backup features enabled, all SORTS of good things this site is not telling you about. They have decided to succumb to the fear of lawsuit, ps3hax.net go there instead for more updates on this stuff.

People, do not update your firmware to 3.42. If you do, your PS3 wont be hacked anymore. All you have to do is just type in 67.202.81.137 in your primary DNS. This will let you log in without updating.

Really though, should piracy even be our focus? Imagine the RAW HOMEBREW POWER this machine yields!!! n64 emulation would be a walk in the park with ice cream!
And don't knock on fat people, there are a lot of fat people coding the homebrew that we often take for granted. ;)

BTW I'm plenty lazy, but not fat yet. ^_^

I've disconnected the PS3 from the network so I can wait and see how this unfolds. I don't have to update to play FF13, at least I hope not. :P
