The PS3 homebrew scene has another reason to celebrate today as famed Spanish coder Hermes releases a modified payload version of the infamous PSGroove, which now allow users to run backups without a disc.

Developer's note:

This code is the result to disassemble port1_config_descriptor and to get some things from AerialX code.

It have some features news:

  • You can launch an EBOOT.BIN (unencrypted) from /dev_usb000 using the menu option "/app_home/PS3_GAME".

You must copy in the root folder of the USB device a PS3_GAME folder with the next content.

PS3GAME
|------- USRDIR ---->EBOOT.BIN
|------- ICON0.PNG
|------- PARAM.SFO

  • You can also launch backups using a manager. The original manager needs a blu-ray disc to exit and run games, but I have added a new feature to create a shortcut between "/app_home/PS3_GAME" and /dev_bdvd. So, it is possible to launch games without a blu-ray disc in the tray, using this path (but you need other manager or you needs eject the disc after leaving the original manager).

I have tested some games, as Uncharted 2, Heavently Sword and others, mounting it directly (in payload the code) and it works without any disc.

Aditional notes:

Te syscall 36 is used to indicate the game path and it is used to create the shortcut detecting a pointer in the payload . I have relocated "memory_patch_table" because the dedicated area is full and it hang if you copy more code.

To compile the PPU code you needs the compilers created by the ps3toolchain and fix the path in PS3_COMPILERS from Makefile.payload. You needs also the AVR compilers (i use an AT90USBKEY) and maybe gcc compiler (for raw2payload utility in others system)

If you are using a PIC or other method, use port1_config_descriptor.h to replace the same thing.

I am buying PS3 games (Demon's Souls, The Chronicles of the White Knights, Lost Planet 2, and a few others) and I haven't even a PS3 yet, only a pair of controllers and the HDMI cable. I -do- plan on getting a PS3 with a broken BLUray drive, but haven't bought the replacement part as I haven't the unit yet, and might go out for my own console if the delay keeps up.

My disk drive stopped accepting disks so now all I can do is just stare at my Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Super Street Fighter 4 cases. However I would not like to see rampant piracy hit the PS3 like it did on the PSP. (PS3 is being sent to Sony for repairs)

See, that's the thing. When the BRD on my original 60GB PS3 broke (out of warranty), I ended up buying a slim. My 60GB is in my shed right now, but I plan on buying a Jailbreak and downloading this to give it a breath of new life, and I seriously doubt I'm the only person who can say that.

my brother's old ps3 blue-ray drive broke and a replacement lens still didn't do the trick. So thanks to this, I can rip a game on his system to transfer to mine, making an otherwise completely useless ps3 into more than a paper weight for me :D.

Anywho, I would think the number of people who have a broken drive would far outweigh pirates waiting for this ability, because who has a ps3 and doesn't have at least one legitimate game disk? Worst case they'd have to pull a game from the bargain bin for $10 and use that to spoof with..

You're ridiculous. So let's say I didn't ever buy another ps3 game, because I'm not buying new ones I can't play any of the 40 that I already own? Think before you post.

you missed the point completly.
jailbreaking to save lens is fair enough, backup manager only needed a disc in the drive for mounting and verification purposes.
this no disc mod is useless, it means someone could buy a PS3 and buy NO games yet still enjoy all the games PS3 has to offer.
at least with the disc needed option you knew the person using it had at least one game.

true. not that the "disc in the tray" version was any better as a deterrent though.

I like homebrew, but this kind of apps are the reason a lot of people hate the homebrew community and label them as pirates. I'm not against running backups if you own the disc, but this is not the right way to do it.

Don't PS3's come with a little dumb disk anyhow? And spending a few dollars on GameInformer or something where they give away free disks with them isn't a problem... or does GameInformer promote piracy now?

I do stand corrected, it didn't come with one, had to ask a friend. However, they gave him a free GameInformer that did indeed come with a disk for free when he purchased it, and nearly any PS3 on eBay has games with them, and I am sure someone would pay you to take their sports games away.

# I disagreeUltimaXIX 2010-09-27 19:12
He hit the nail on the head. If I were to visit CEX right now, I could pick up a copy of FIFA 08 for £2. The developers would be receiving absolutely no money from that because the game is out of circulation, and I would have been all set for piracy anyway. This "no disc" fix doesn't make the situation ANY worse. It's exactly the same as it was before... seriously, do you think that Sony took comfort thinking, "oh well at least they all bought ONE game"?

Even people with broken lasers could get that fixed so they could buy games/movies again.

PS3 homebrew isn't about piracy but people still bash homebrew for the wrong reasons.

The fix is about $70 or more, voiding your warranty, learning how to open your console, chancing ruining something else, etc.

I have a launch PS3. If the disc drive were to break, I would have to send it in and get a new Slim model. I would lose features like playing PS1/PS2 games that I own. Not to mention the cost of having it repaired.

So I'd use this to backup games, ease my fears.

If you have a broken lazer, this IS for you, yes, you can still buy legitimate games, and then download them so that it's legal for you to own the download. TA-DA! Its basically like going out and spending $60 on a license for the download. I GUARANTEE you, someone will do it, maybe dozens, maybe hundreds, maybe everyone. I am a pirate, but I believe in others more than myself.

It is NEVER legal to own a copy of a game off of its original format.

Never, ever, ever. Dont be delusional. The hackneyed bit of law pirates like to cling to is specifically aimed as personal computer software from floppy friggin discs.

Read the law. Cripes.

Do in fact read the law. Section 117 of the US Copyright Act does in fact allow the legal owner of a computer program to make an archival copy from any media onto any media the owner should choose. Whether or not you consider games computer programs doesn't matter, the law does classify them as so.

However the license agreement you agreed to when you purchased the software may limit these rights.

To address the last bit, license agreements never take precedence over law. The worst that should happen is you get taken to the US equivilent of what we call "county court", which is how breaches of contracts are dealt with. It wouldn't be a criminal matter.

There was one thing I wanted to add, however; the same section you mentioned also has a clause limiting the number of homemade copies of software you've legally obtained to just one copy.

It will have all of the functionality that I paid for, and more. If Sony had had more respect for their consumers, I might feel differently. At this point, however, Sony can lick my ass.

calm down, a very small percent of ps3 owners are using this. Most people have already upgraded to 3.42 or 3.50 firmware. And most pirates wouldn't buy the games they pirate so the amount of sales being lost by the developers is very very small. I'm not saying it's a good thing, but to say that this is going to kill the ps3 is a little far fetched.

PSP isn't dead, its like 6yrs old, but not dead. Sony is ruining the PSP more than 'pirates'. I have CFW on my PSP. Why? Underclocking the processor for just music, make the battery last so much longer. Put my games onto my memory stick, no collection of disks with me, just a case of some memory sticks (And yes, I buy official Sony brands of them, so Sony is making extra money off them from me as well, as I never trusted third party brand-names). They also load faster. I own the originals, and hell, I bought a game recently to play with my friends, got an official game, box, instruction booklet, and code to play online, yet Sony still denies my console from going online to play with my friends. Now I have to find hacks and other ways to get my console to play with my friends without using Sony's network.

All of you need to stop complaining weather its about piracy or dead lasers.

He is a legitimate use from a legit JB'er.

I have over 100 movies which I have kept and do not plan to sell but have converted all of them to DIVX. No piracy, just practical. Sony has been trying to sell digital copies for years. Well guess what? I love digital copies. I have a PSP GO and have purchased every title I own. My entire DIVX collection is plugged into my PS3 and disc are out of site not taking up any space and I can pick from my movies that I own on demand.

Now,I have over 30 REAL hard copy games that take up space in my living room which my wife considers an eye sore. Guess what, all of those disc have not made it to Craigslist but are now in the basement with my movie collection. All games, with the exception of 5 titles were successfully playable and backed up as DIGITAL COPIES. I have not pirated a single game and love the fact that I do not have to have a disc in the PS3 and I can now keep my Netflix disc in the drive without having to eject it continuously.

SO LONG STUPID DVD BOXES AND GAMES! I AM GOING THE SONY WAY! DIGITAL!

Every game I have on my memory sticks, I have the UMDs for.

I just prefer not to have to carry discs around with me. I have 15 games on my card at the moment and it's convenient.

Not everyone is a pirate so stop thinking that they are.

And look at this way, if they actually listened to consumers and implemented things we ask for (seeing as WE are the paying customers), piracy might not be so rampant.

they are sticking it to the restrictive overpriced games system makers.
pay no mind to the nay sayers, they are just mad because its too complicated for them to make a hack, or because they are too housebroken(nan cyboys) to dare do something daring.
They are kind of bigots that want everybody to pay overpriced prices like they did so that they dont feel like a bunch of fracking idiots for paying top dollar for something they could have gotten for free.
Guys dont be idiots, dont pay top dollars for something you can get for free, you are supporting mediocrity.
if a game is good, it will sell, somebody will buy it.
if a game is good and cheap, I will buy it, every pirate will buy it.
A blank bluray disc is $1
A bluray movie at wallmart is ~$10

Piracy is probably going to never stop anyway, and I am just fie with tat. I love piracy, its the most effective way to spread the game around... Most pirates i know, including myself, download games... and if they really really like them... they usually buy them. Thats what I do. With the PSP, thats exactly what I did. I pirated God of war, and I loved it soo much, that I now have a UMD that i purchased and play almost everyday.

Look, even if you all oppose piracy soo much, its not going to change. There will always be pirates, and they will always find ways to pirate, even with all the protection nowadays... Like that DRM SecuROM bullshit that came with Chronicles of riddick, assault on dark athena, and many others. They think that this so called "Protection" will stop piracy... instead, it caused alot of people to instead pirate the game because the stupid protection did not let you even own the damn game, all it did was let u download it a certain amount of times...

All Im saying is... Piracy wont stop, and no matter what these companies do, piracy is not going to stop, all of us will find our ways around. So stop the complaining, because either way it was probably bound to happen anyway, every system can be hacked, and will be hacked. And piracy is usually the main reason why. Who the hell uses homebrew for stuff other then piracy? I dont. Most of it is crap unless its like IRShell for PSP or Emulators. Most homebrew is used for piracy.

I am probably guna get alot of -1's but i dont give a damn. Piracy wont stop. and I support it.

# RE: PSGROOVE Payload Custom released, plays PS3 backups without a discbubblez 2010-09-26 00:20
this may promote piracy but their are definite legit uses. I have a large UMD collection for my psp and custom firmware saves me carrying the UMDs im playing with me, same would go for my ps3 if I hadnt updated the firmware :P

I love how everyone who makes a good point gets voted down by the people who know they're wrong.
