PS3's SIXAXIS vs Xbox 360's controller - battle of the cables

It's only a few more days before both the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 launch, and while we've already talked about all possible aspects to these competing consoles, from graphics power to gaming lineups, we thought we'd round out the discussions with a comparison of their hardware.

Gizmodo recently posted this video regarding the USB charge cables for the PS3's SIXAXIS and Xbox 360's standard controller, and they've pointed out that the PS3's cable's a scant five feet long - one foot short of the viewing distance most Optometrists recommend.

Remember that both controllers are designed to be wireless, so these cables are only to be used for playing with a drained battery - that goes without saying that we cringe at the thought of playing that close to an HDTV screen. On a side note, Jason says you can theoretically plug the PS3's USB cable into laptop's port, a USB hub, or an Xbox 360 - we liked the last idea best.

Longer wires

Luckally for us ps3 ppl the cable used for the ps3 controller is the standerdised cable used for many usb type items, such as; walkmans, ipods, psp, ect. And these cable cost around £5-£10 for a 3 metre cable

yes but...

Do they come with dildo attachment?

by skidz - 2006-11-12 03:44:32
Wii Wii

What do ya know eh, so obviously the guy isn't a fanboy like the rider of PS3s above. Looks like a friendly neutral party! Like Communism! By that I mean Communism being a party!

by - 2006-11-12 04:14:35

O.o

Um, yeah well who cares for the cables and all, i think i'd actually want to use the wireless from my bed, i get tired of untieing cables from the ps2 and gamecube. Meh, either way as long as they followed the charge by usb thats really all i care for about wires on the PS3. Does Wii-mote have a recharger with batteries or any coming out soon? If it doesn't then i'm just using the rechargable batteries i have left.

Surgeon General

You shouldn't sit close to a Hard Disc Drive screen, whenever you decide to invent one.
by Shatterdome - 2006-11-12 05:16:33
That's funny

Here I am still wanting a couple more feet out of my 360 cable :P Yeah it's a standard cable, but unless you look for it hard you wont find one over 6 ft. Next, wireless, great, what happens when you need to charge ? Buy another accesory ?
by - 2006-11-12 05:36:22
yeah but

for the ps3 cable it'll be a jap version, so it will be shorter. Seeing that space is very tight in japan all things are like this. They got a smaller controllers for most consoles too. cables for the ps2 controller are two feet shorter. This is simply done on a needs must basis. They dont need long cables so they dont make them like that.

hmm

well with a 30 hour battery life and a quick charge time, i dont think youll need an excess of cording for the SIXAXIS to charge. The 360 controller is a wireless controller as well but the charge cord isnt included out of the box so how bout showing the wired controllers length in comparison as well and not just the wireless 360 controller with the plug n charge kit
by - 2006-11-12 09:23:00
that wasnt a standard 360 controller

that wasnt a standard 360 controller it was a wirelss with a charge and play
by - 2006-11-12 09:26:16
small one

I will use my own USB cable small one 4'inch.. Why would you want to have a long cable like the one for the 360 :( its damn ugly.
by Vietone - 2006-11-12 09:52:31
Lets compare play time

With a 30 hour battery life, you should never have to play and charge a controller. Yes since the PS3 uses a standard USB connection, you can buy any USB extension cable or better yet, buy a USB hub and you wont have to connect it to the PS3 at all.
by Pyro - 2006-11-12 10:12:29
.

I'm pretty sure the play and charge and the normal wired controller are 9ft long.
by - 2006-11-12 11:41:02
both good controllers

im sure both of the systems controller will be good and awsome!
by - 2006-11-12 11:41:26
ummmm

"that wasnt a standard 360 controller that wasnt a standard 360 controller it was a wirelss with a charge and play " the wireless is standard... didn't you buy premium like everyone else with a sane mind? also, umm i only play with the play and charge kit when necessary, otherwise i plug it in my computer which is on all the time, so i charge it over night...so yeh
by senjutsu - 2006-11-12 12:19:41
what an imbecile topic

the ps3 have 30 hours of batterie, like I need to charge it while playing! this topic is useless! ( I suppose the xbox 360 have a LOT less batterie since It gave something longer with the controller lol )
by [BOT] Bob - 2006-11-12 12:59:26
What?

PS3 doesn't have any wired controllers, 100% of the controllers are the same, which is wireless. I find it funny that he didn't mention wireless play distance, I remember seeing a pic of the 1up guys like about 60 feet away from the PS3 without lag apparently. Thank god for bluetooth.
by - 2006-11-12 13:09:49
ouch

Learn how to spell hahaha
by - 2006-11-12 13:17:43
man

wow 360 cable is 2x longer and i still think the 360 cable is to short...sony must think people wont want to play while the controllers charge?
by - 2006-11-12 14:33:19
umm

Did you even read any of the above posts? You should never need to have the cable plugged in while playing. The play time on the controller is 30 hours so once or twice a week you plug the controller in before you go to bed and thats it. Again there should be no reason to have the charge cable plugged in while playing.
by - 2006-11-12 15:01:18
What are you talking about?

The 360's controller has a 25 hour battery life. That's -5 hours than the PS3's supposed battery life. I don't know about other 360 owners, but I do have to charge my controller while playing every once in a while. I forget to charge it, it dies, and I want to play a game and not have to wait for the thing to charge. I doubt that will happen with the PS3 though.. you know, cause it has 30 hours of battery life.

PWNED AGAIN

PWNED AGAIN SONY PWNED AGAIN!!!
by mannyman789 - 2006-11-12 20:22:22
it doesnt matter

who the hell cares if the *****in cable is longer so what?? you just play wireless, and when the battery is low charge it and go do something else other than be geeks and want to play FF all day get a life how cares and the cables are nothing but a mini usb port cable so a usb cable extender should do the trick. BUt who the fudge wants to play their system 10 feet away from the tv. people argue about all of these consoles they are all better in their own ways. like for example xbox360 cable is longer, but their wireless controller takes batteries. ps3 run on an internal battery, but the cable is shorter, and the wii runs on batteries also, but it has NO cables peroid and a nice ocntroller that adds a 4th demision to gaming so STFU people
by - 2006-11-13 06:43:46
remember

The PS3 pad has an extra 5 hours of charge probably because it doesn't have force feedback as its "impossible", funny how nintendo managed to have force feedback and full motion sensing, guess their guys worked on it that much bit harder to do the impossible lol
by - 2006-11-13 08:39:22
Anyone else notice....

Anyone lol when you see that guys foot and part of his leg (about 3/4 through the vid)? I love the PJ's!!!
by - 2006-11-14 16:57:22
he bought a longer cable

360 cords arent that long for controllers, I have both a 360 wireless and wired controller, both are same length and both are about 6 feet, the one there looks to be about 10 feet
