PS3's power will be untapped for years, says Dave Perry |

Former Shiny boss David Perry describes Sony's next gen PS3 console as "the best piece of hardware, without question," but believes that it will take videogame developers years before they can hope to tap the console's full powers. In an exclusive interview with GamesIndustry.biz at GDC 07, Perry said that he hasn't seen a single game so far that shows him what the PS3 is truly capable of.
"I haven't seen anything even close to what the machine's capable of doing," he claimed. "So that's the sad part for Sony - I feel really bad for them that somebody hasn't really stepped up to show us the hardware all singing, all dancing."
Perry attributed this under-utilization to a common cycle in the console market. Perry used the PS2 title God of War as an example of a game that finally tapped a console's power after it had been out on the market for a few years. "The point is," said Perry, "you're not going to get to see the PlayStation 3 for probably a couple of years, and then you're going to go, 'Wow, that's incredible.'"
Perry also lays blame on the door of the hardware designers themselves. "This is how sad the industry is right now," he said. "If Sony thought of a way that their architecture designers could somehow add even more power for less money, but made programming a misery - actually made you just want to kill yourself - they would do it."
What Perry sees as a solution is adding more input from top developers into the design of a console system. Perry claims that this move would help to "focus on what's important" rather than building in secondary features at the cost of affordability and game functionality.

Developers aren't having nearly as many complaints developing for Microsoft. I guess sony never had to worry about making a console easy to develop for in the past. Shouldn't have underestimated the competition, sony.
All he said about the untapped power etc could just as well apply to any console or even indeed the latest PCs.

Remember when the ps2 came out and they were babling on and on about the emotion engine and how it would make hair and clothing move realistically? Well none of the promises came true then so im not holding my breath now. If you compare the gamecube version of resident evil side by side with the ps2 version you will notice how crappy the ps2 version is...i mean even nintendo had better graphics last time.... and for a machine that has nothing going for it other than supposed better graphics the games look pretty *****ty. Motorstorm sucks resistance is average and the rest are forgetable at best. hopefully ps3 will get some great games...or they can not release anything like the psp and spend more time on firmware upgrades than getting great exclusive games for the system.
at least go play the games before you diss them, and don't say you have, nobody believes your stupid little lies. Why can't you just go away, go play in the xbox forums?? seriously, you just lie, and get on everyones nerves.
nobody complains about developing for the xbox because it's a cheap POS. maybe if they make one with any sort of future, people will have to try harder. Oh, and who is making any great games for the xbox? Gears is crap, halo is weak. Is that all you have? lame fps games? Get a life! Is it just me or are you people being too critical. First off, RESISTANCE IS NOT AVERAGE!!! Resistance is one of themost fun experiences I have had in a long time. You can put that game on and before you know it hours have passed. Sure it does not have GEars of War's graphics (though the environments in Resistance is better). But people are extremely ignorant. Gears is BASICALLY JUST GRAPHICS. I like the game and have had fun with it but come on lets be serious. Its a half azz multi player and a single player that is over in a few hours. TALK ABOUT REPETITIVE.
And yes gamecube did have better graphics than PS2. Thats because it came out a year later (PS3 vs 360 anyone?).
Stop being so critical. Why cant everyone be like me and just own all 3. That was you can TRULY be objective. If you ONLY have a 360 then you will favor it, and the same goes for people who only have a PS3. Buy em all then judge.

Sony has sold over 200 million PS1/PS2 consoles. There hasn't been competition until just recently. The PS3 is ahead of it's time, now Microsoft is playing catch up. I wonder if we will see a cell machine from them?
Motorstorm sucks??? I wonder if you are refering to the japanese version of the game. It scored very high here in the states. The critics claim it looks and plays better for the U.S. release which comes out today by the way. So maybe you should play the finished product before you judge. Or maybe you just don't like off road games with spectacular crashes and HD visuals and road rash gameplay!!!
For this same reason, the Saturn was a pain to develop for, thus started the decline for them.
Ps2 was a hard to develop for but it had followers so they dealt with it, but it was a first step in the wrong direction for sony.
Ps3 is taking the same route again but now developers are starting to say, why bother, this is overly complicated for no apparent reason other than sony really doesnt know how to build a well conceived system.
Its like saying, hey lets throw a rocket on this car to make it go faster, instead of actually thinking about the crazyness the idea is.
Ah well, in a lot of ways I hope they die the painfull death their arrogance deserves. And that makes me mad that I have to feel that way.
The cell is just hype. It isn't the next step up in technology. Why do you think only sony uses the cell? Why don't any computer manufacturers have any interest in it? It has inferior general purpose computing power compared to a good dual or triple core processor. The cell may have it's uses, but computers and game systems work better with more than one TRUE core.

does anybody actually think that SONY as a company would die or just the PS3? I'm no fanboy, but saying that SONY will die over and over is really getting annoying. You gotta remember, SONY makes more than just video game products. If anyone is going to bash the PS3, at least refer to SCE(Sony Computer Entertainment) not the entire SONY corporation. At least that would show you know something.

if the games do look any better than gears of war... then they will hav to sacrifice disc space , where they could have put more levels, vehicles, characters,,
and dont start with ,ohh there not gonna use all that space....cause resistance was going to take 22 gig's to make , but they converted the movies to keep it at 16 gig'z...........already almost twice the 360 disk capacity

Even if sales are terrible, do you really think Sony would just stop supporting this thing that they made out to be such a huge thing? Sony has a lot of money. Even if the units do not move, PS3 will be around for however long they want it to. Plus, I would not imagine sales really going down from here, considering actual Sony games are on the horizon. We will see if PS3 can even catch up, but I really doubt it will disappear until a PS4 or whatever comes out.

it needs more than blu-ray to make that a reality. so dvd is not holding gta4 back, that's the excuse stupid ps3 fanboys make to try to explain the lack of difference between the consoles.
what you're asking for would also need more ram to store everything during gameplay (loading from hdd is not good enough), and both 360 and ps3 have only 512MB (half of that for graphics), not 1GB or more!
and how long do you think it will take developers to create the game you suggest? the reality is, even if devs have all power and storage needed to create your massive game, they probably don't have the time or the money to create it. unless you want gta4 in 2010 that is?

iunno i played motorstorm demo.. its kinda cool i guess, but definitely not worth the price of a ps3 game... the tilt steering is fun, really hard tho
lets hope they "unlock" the ps3 soon enough to save it
instead of just repeating same style games with better graphics... once 2 or 3 really good games for ps3 comes out, sales will boost for sure, just get 1 or 2 really good online games out and it'll be a console seller

However, if you actually knew anything, you would know that the SPU's handle absolutely no branching code, which is what general purpose Cores handle.
It's a fact, PS3 has less general purpose computing power then even a 2 core cpu, read some technical articles and quite THINKING you know what you are talking about.
You WILL NOT see cell in any desktop PC's, I can guarentee you that....it's only true application is in Servers and science applications...

Sony always does this with their consoles, makes something advanced(more than the other consoles at least) and then their product wins in the end because it's just as good as the other ones are new because of its library, its just their technique, and Microsoft probably has realized this, but decides not to do the same thing as to prevent failure. As for the Cell Processor, it's not being used by computer manufacturers because windows doesn't support it Lol...go figure...those bastards.
Anyhow, he's right about it being untapped, Xbox360 is reaching its full potential as we argue.

Yeah!!! LEts compare the WORST PORT from Gamecube->PS2, IT WAS A PORT!!!! Meaning that it was made for the gamecube, then crapily put on the Ps2 and it took a graphic cut because Ps2 is DIFFERENT.

The cell hasnt proved anything yet, and restitance was 22 gigs becasue of uncompressed audio, movies, and the game is on multiple locations on the disk to increase load times. Both systems show promise, one is in a better place right now, but its still very early in the life span of these consoles. I do think it's too early to tell which format will win the next Gen console wars but I will say this:
I have played alot of 360 games and completed some of them, I have also kicked some ass on some of the Live games (Gears and Rainbow) but - I have never really been that excited about the Xbox360 console (I'd have bought my own if I had) and as far my needs are concerned I am looking for convergence in true pure HD and in my opinion this can only be achieved through PS3. But this my opinion and I am not trying to push this on anyone especially the Xbox fanboys. I hope you can respect that. It's a shame that we cannot express ourselves on a PS3 news forum without having our opinions bashed or tarnished by utter crap and untrue speculative bol*@cks (e.g. mister common sense).
i never go into the xbox forums to complain, i do own a 360 tho, but bought it second hand while i wait for the ps3 to come out here. i am greatly disapointed in my 360 experience and hope my ps3 one will be better.
Lol. Had you actually READ what I had posted instead of being in a rush to spout your nonsense, you would have realized that my "brilliant observation" was made in sarcasam. But, since humor is obviously useless on the ignorant, I appologize for trying. Two things: 1) You don't see the cell in a pc because it's so new. It's the same reason you don't see hydrogen-fueled cars on the road; they exist, but they've very new. 2) The current Cell processor can reach 6Ghz non-overclocked, which is faster than any non-overclocked dual core on the market. Oh, can you please provide links to these technical articles, so it doesn't seem like you've suspiciously made them up? Thanks. :-D
