PS3's Firmware 1.50 reported to cause problems with Blu-Ray

The patch that needs a patch? - Image 1A number of PS3 owners have been reporting that they have noticed that their Blu-Ray movies have started freezing up, right after they upgraded their PS3's firmware to 1.5.

The latest firmware update was supposed to resolve an issue regarding the upscaling of PS2 titles that are played on the PS3 via backwards-compatibility. It was also supposed to provide additional online functionality, though many suspect that it may be this same feature which is indirectly causing the problems in the system.

Among the hiccups that PS3s have been displaying after the firmware update, the most noticeable and most-reported would be Blu-Ray discs freezing up during playback (and many have been able to rule out the possibility of a defective disc in this case), difficulty with using the wireless controller for navigating the BD, and issues with wireless connection to the internet. Many have also noted that only those who have direct internet connections were spared from the bugs that were brought on by the latest firmware update.

PS3 owners who contacted Sony's technical support center were apparently advised to seek help in the PS3 forums instead. If any of our readers are experiencing similar problems, let us know in the comments!

Looks like sony has their own firmware update problems, and that's with nobody illegally modifying their consoles yet. You get 2 minor problems solved and 3 major problems back! Unresponsive controllers, movies freezing up, and wireless not working.

I knew it was inevitable.

360 fanboys spammed IGN when it launched claiming their "PS3's" failed when they didnt even own one. I have the update and no problems AND i went over to a friends house and zero problems on his machine as well in all of those areas.

I have my PS3 and I love it to death, but after I updated to 1.5, Blu-ray movies stopped working. I can get to the title menu, but when I try to play the movie it goes blank. Hope they get this figured out and fixed soon. Not that it's a huge deal -- I'm mostly in it for the games -- but it's an annoyance.

Blu-ray freezes up for 5-7 seconds and then resumes. At this time, it is a minor annoyance. I would assume that the next update will fix this problem. Only happened with one movie so far.

I have been watching many Blu Ray discs over the last 5 days, I actually rented just about everyone at the small blockbuster by my house (12). I haven't had any problems to speak of at all with the sixaxis, remote, or either internet hookup.

The only issue I've ever had was one bluetooth drop back during launch week before the first update and one hang up after it had be on for 12+hours and I was doing something in game.

All in all:

I'M VERY IMPRESSED WITH PS3 SO FAR.

and

PEOPLE NEED TO STOP EXPECTING SO MUCH AND NITPICKING SO MUCH.

Boy, remember the days when consoles didn't need to constantly waste time downloading updates? I was just changing some setting on my ps3 and it interrupted me and told me I had to download the upgrade to continue. wtf, everything worked fine before, why MUST i upgrade? Anyway I wasted the time updating and watched one blu-ray movie with no problems. So hurrah! My system now works as much as it did before.

Rather have small problem that can be fixed with an update instead of a bricked console like 360s has in its dark firmware update history.

With my Playstation 3, the unresponsive controller thing happened before the update. It's annoying. Expecially in Resistance when I'm playing online about to kill somebody and my guy suddenly starts spinning around in circles because the controller stopped working right while I was looking around, and then everyone sees me and I get ganged banged and can't do anything about it. It's happened more than once. The controller usually starts working again after about 10 seconds. I haven't had any blu-ray problems with the new firmware or wireless internet connection problems, though.

# Wireless Connection ProblemsGuest 2007-01-31 16:21
This would certainly explain why suddenly my PS3 has been unable to connect to the internet wirelessly. In running a connection test, I noticed that "UPnP" had failed. However,

I FOUND A WORK-AROUND:

If you go through the wireless connection settings individually (manually) you will eventually get to an option to either enable or disable Universal Plug n Play or "UPnP". DISABLE IT if your router is not compatible. Test the connection again to make sure it worked.

# Its really just for onlineGuest 2007-01-31 16:32
If and when the pirating starts on PS3 sony will use the updates to combat it and the only way to make people want to install these updates is threaten them with no online. ALSO after a while the games start to require updates so even if you use it offline only then Sony will still catch up to the pirates.

notice how only 360 fanboys really go outta their way to start flame wars when PS3 fanboys just sit back on the PS3 section enjoying it all then some d*ckless f*ck like mr common sense comes along and gives stupid reasons for why his precious 360 is better. But in reality PS3 is better and cheaper no one really cares because addons which you need to do anything dont count as the cost of the console. THAT is type of reasoning people like you use. THAT is why you should get the h*ll out of here and never come back but i bet you will because you LOVE to claim you're right. Its like america saying OH THERES NO GLOBAL WARMING. If you honestly think theres no global warming you should go join bush in his realm of fantasy.

This is the problem with next gen systems, they are rushed out the door and then updated. If sony couldn't run firmware updates on the PS3 they would have done a better job of ensuring the software was bug free. Same goings for the 360.

I guess the plus side is more features and improved features. But it's not good when updates take a bad turn and do more harm then good. I haven't had any problems with my 360, but because it's modded i always wait at least a week and stick close to the forums to see if there is any problems. I recommend you all do the same.

# Do you care about the truth? Of course not you need to support your PS3Guest 2007-02-01 01:44
This is classic:

"notice how only 360 fanboys really go outta their way to start flame wars when PS3 fanboys just sit back on the PS3 section enjoying it all then some d*ckless f*ck like mr common sense comes along and gives stupid reasons for why his precious 360 is better. As I recall, shortly after problems with the 360's fall update surfaced it was revealed the people with problems used a certain version of hacked DVD firmware to allow piracy. ILLEGAL MODIFICATIONS DESIGNED TO STEAL. Did that stop the desperate pathetic fanboys looking for ammo to feed their lies about the better console? Of course not, even after it was confirmed. Even after MS offered to fix all consoles free, despite illegal hacking, I still see that come up. That is what's pathetic, because it seems to be the best you can come up with.

This is really sad sony doesn't even test their firmware on the one version of PS3 hardware with nobody modifying it, still has problems! Then the PS3 fans act like it's nothing. It seems like it's easier for $ony to program peoples' brains rather than their PS3.

I'm really happy I'm pissing you off so bad matt, and I will keep it up until your kind realizes the truth. You might think you're offending me with your childish name calling, but that is quite possibly what I enjoy the most. I can just picture matt shaking his fist at his computer saying "that SOB is making fun of my PS3! I'll show him!" Really all I did is restate what the article said on a PS3 site and you get so mad. Truly pathetic.

Every day it becomes more of a reality, the PS3 is and will always be a failure! Acceptance is healthier than denial. In psychology, it's called a psychosis. Accepting a different reality than what exists in the real world. There's doctors that can prescribe medication for that you know.

# Why do you care about the "problems" of a console you don't own more than the one you paid $600 for?Guest 2007-02-01 01:49
STFU joe mama. If you cared about the truth (a no no for a hopeful PS3 fan) you'd realize it wasn't Microsoft's fault and they fixed any affected consoles anyway.

Really how stupid is a comment like that?

Never update as soon as a new firmware comes out! That applies to all consoles. Let others be the ginea pig.

For the record, my 360 never had a single problem with anything.

Let me change what I said actually ... since my grammar was horrible and detracted from my argument. It's completely okay for me to spend my day on QJ trying to make the Xbox 360 seem like the best product in the world. However, if you try and make your console seem like the best - I'm going to be right here waiting to post my bull***** just to make you mad. And, by the way, I have no idea what I am ever talking about - so that's why I hide behind a screen name.

Let me be an example for all. If you have no great meaning in your life. Try and boost the sales of a company that you like. Or, in my case. Work for MS and go around bashing competitors, just like MS has always done. I do a great job at that.

I really would like to apologize to Mr. Common Sense. It's just things have been rough lately. I bought my PS3 for $1600 on ebay last year and it's just not doing so hot. Then Mr. Common Sense comes along and points out all these problems with it and I just feel like I wasted my money. Then yesterday I broke up with my boyfriend of 6 years (I think for good this time) and I'm ready to have a nervous breakdown. It just seems like lying about the PS3 to make it seem better is the only thing that makes me feel good anymore.

Honestly, if it weren't for me, you would think the PS3 is perfect and sony is doing a good job supporting it. If nothing else, I am making you aware of the PS3's shortcomings, so hopefully you will complain to sony about it! If they really are a company that cares about the consumer that made the PS2 an incredible success, they will fix them! If not, maybe you should take your business (and all the money you pay on the system, games, and accessories) elsewhere.

MS doesn't make empty promises. They make it happen so they know it's possible, then make an announcment. Sony makes outragous claims, struggles to make it happen, then it fails or is not possible, then they sweep the lies under the rug so hopefully nobody notices. If I notice these lies why don't you guys?

All I'm trying to do is keep sony in check, because most people don't care or remember their lies!

I still enjoy it when people get all pissed off though. It's like half these kids are still in grade school.

# USB may be causing Lockups under 1.5, 1.51damonous 2007-02-04 02:33
I have something very interesting to report regarding firmware 1.51....

Just yesterday, I had decided to try out a PS2-to-USB adapter and the Intec PS2 infrared remote control (I'd like to program my Universal remote for PS3). I had this in the USB port while on v1.50, and then upgraded to v1.51. I had also bought Wicker Man on BluRay yesterday. When watching, I got annoying total-lockups randomly every 10-15mins throughout playback --requiring me to skip back/forward to unlock.

I also noticed sporadic 1-second deadlocks on the BluRay controller in Ridge Racer, causing me to slam into walls.

I removed the USB, and Ridge Racer was fine. This morning, I'm running Wicker Man again and have so far been about 25mins into it with no sign of lockup.

...So, check what other stuff you've got plugged into your PS3. That may be the real issue. I'll try to post later and let you know if it cleared the whole movie.

# No USB - No movie lock-updamonous 2007-02-04 03:48
Okay, the movie just finally ended, and NO lockups at any point. Now, I had seen 1 lock-up at the end credit roll on v1.5 last week on Scooby Doo bluRay. However, it was only 1 and I didn't think anything of it. I think that my experiment here does prove some sort of relationship to external USB adapters, etc. as a possible source of problem.

But as far as firmware downloading is concerned, can the PS3 take CD-Rs?
