PS3's defining moment is around the corner |

Ó
I wasn't able to sleep last night. Call me as someone without a life if you want, but my head's just filled with thoughts of Wiimote operating the PS3. With that in mind, you probably would understand if Microsoft and Xbox 360 is not quite in my consciousness right now.The Wii and the PS3 were just launched and as we have all conceded, Nintendo came up with its promised numbers. Even though Sony's having some problems with hardware supplies, I'm not abandoning my horse in this race.
Why? Well, there are a lot of reasons. But since you wouldn't probably buy what I would say anyway, read this:
The PlayStation 3 isn't always going to be in short supply. Several months from now, no one will recall a day when there was precious little chance of snagging the new console with Blu-ray capability. One has to wonder if the Wii controller system might eventually fall flat. Will users yearn for the days when one merely pressed buttons instead of waving a remote-control-like device?
Now, that is an interesting thought. I came across it today over at Yahoo. To be quite frank, the Wii is indeed selling like insane nowadays, simply because it is different. People tend to become curious, they tend to gravitate towards something new...at the start. But the moment the novelty wears off, they will come running back to the comfort of age-tested methods: the SIXAXIS, the DualShock, the analog controller.
And when that time comes, there will be a helluva number of PS3 units waiting in the retail stores...

Another point is that by the end of it's life, the Wii technology will be seriously long in the tooth, it can't be too much higher than the GC as it is simply uprated specs of it, but I suppose this will help Nintendo make stable step back towards being a console fighting for the lead.
PS3 will sell because of the Playstation brand, plus prices will fall as production methods improve and the PS1/2 emulator software comes good which means the Emotion Engine won't be required any more.

Uhm sure that is why it is almost impossible to get a DS (especially a pink one, but others are nearly sold out too). Also no shop in my town has Nintendogs at the moment on stock - all sold out. Obvioulsy there is a quite big market for those "untraditional 'fun' games" :).
The good thing is it won't interfere with the traditional game market as totally different people are buying those new games. So don't worry game publishers will still produce the traditional games, but that doesn't mean a console can't live in that other new market.

Take a gander at that before you start flaming the writers.

there is no arguing that previous Game Boy owners (there are millions and millions of them. over, at the least, 100 million) are going to upgrade to the DS, due to it's backwards compatibility. the DS isn't 100% expanding the market to new types of gamers. most original DS owners bought the Lite. not coincedentally, sales of the DS spiked when the Lite was released. why? because previous DS owners were buying them (every single person i've talked to, whether at work or gaming stores, or my friends that owned the original DS, bought the DS Lite. why? because it was the DS Lite! it was smaller than the original DS! and has a brighter backlight! yay! that's the reason why the DS is pushing so many units. people are upgrading. yes, there are parents and grandparents that are getting into the DS (bravo, Nintendo), but you are kidding yourself if you think that the millions of DSes that have been bought since it's release are completely new people to gaming.
the Wii has backwards compatibility with Gamecube games, but last i checked, the Gamecube sold 25 million units, and the number of games that are worth having that aren't Nintendo made products are tiny.
backwards compatibility sells consoles. sure, the Wii has old NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and Turbo Grafix 16 games, etc, but having played those games 20 years ago, and a few yesterday, actually, they aren't what sell consoles. they are, at most, 30 minute escapes, until you get tired and frustrated by the archaic and insanely difficult gameplay, and what something new.
Contra has a point. without Zelda, there wouldn't be much to keep you playing your Wii for longer than a hour or two, unless you have your friends over 24/7. i have a Wii, as well as a PS3. the PS3 gets more playtime. why? not because the wand tires you out (it can, but you really have to be kind of crazy and going at it for that to happen), but because the games just aren't nearly as fun alone. it's a party console, pure and simple.
ironically, the PS3 and 360 can be a party console also. we recently had a group of friends over and we played the Wii for a bit (fun and enjoyable), but eventually got tired of it and popped in Resistance: Fall of Man. our guests were just as captivated and entertained by the chaos onscreen from Resistance, as they were from swinging a racket in Wii Sports.
back to my underpowered comment at the start of this post. the Wii is underpowered. if there is one thing that gaming has done consistently since it's inception is push technology forward. motion sensing is not new. it will get old eventually. the question is how long will it take to get old, and what is Nintendo going to do when that happens?
why is having power under the hood a bad thing? games like Resistance, Gears of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, Grand Theft Auto 3-San Andreas, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 4 could not have been possible on, say, an SNES or Playstation 1.
it took a more powerful system (as well as a storage medium with the capacity to hold that information) to bring those games to fruition. i can't help but imagine the kinds of experiences Nintendo could have created with the wand if they had more power under their hood. and i'm not talking about the visuals, though they serve to enhance a gaming experience, but the gameplay.
the Wii can't compete in the long term. when games like Mass Effect and Metal Gear Solid 4 hit store shelves next year, people are not going to care about waving a wand around. they'll be fascinated that gaming is now capable of delivering visuals and experiences that can rival a feature film (something gaming has been trying to do since the SNES. don't believe me? fire up Flashback or the Star Wars Trilogy on the Super Nintendo).
that technology is closer than ever now, and gamers and non-gamers will be enraptured by it.

i would rather own a CORE XBOX 360 BUNDLE AND A NITENDO WII then own a 60 GB PS3.
CORE XBOX360 BUNDLE - $400 CAD
WII - $280 CAD
TOTAL - $680 CAD
60 GB PS3 - $660 CAD
now lets take a look at those numbers... for an extra $20 over the ps3s price... i can own a wii system, a xbox 360 in which i get innovation AND high end graphics system, and a HUGE SELECTION of games.
Now who in the right mind would choose PS3 when for $20 more you can own an xbox 360 AND a wii.
Thats the bottom line. Out of the 3 next gen consoles, one of them cost just as much as the other 2 put together!!!

First things first the core system is a horrible rip-off on true gamers. The system allows for no backwards compatibility since it also lacks an HDD. There for you also have to buy memory cards.
The core also has no headset or the ability to play online with other people unless you buy a live subscription.
Also there is no wireless controller with the core system which is a standard in all the next-gen consoles now.
You also seem to over look completely the $500 PS3 which offers all the backwards compatibility of the 60GB model and all its other features except for a card reader and wifi.
The card reader can be bought online (usb card reader) for around $20. The HDD can be upgraded for less than $100 (the 20GB HDD for 360 costs $100 and cannot be upgraded with anything else) to be over 100GB and wifi adapters can be bought as well for the same price as the 360s wifi adapters (which are needed on either the premium or core models).
So it's easy to see that you tilt your numbers in the favor of bashing the PS3. Pricing wise the PS3 20GB model is a good deal for a new console that also functions as a BD player.
Please refrain from anymore slander.

Also the fact you judge how well a console will do based on online availability is very short sighted.
You make all these statements based on your own conjecture and nothing more.

a core 360 is $400
a gamecube is about $80
plastic baseball/basketball/bowling/tennis set at flee market $20.
thats $500 for a 360 and a Wii. use the plastic sports equipment with your gamecube and youve got wii sports.
all that for the same price of a 20GB ps3

HDDs should be pretty much standard. I mean Wii has built in memory even, but not all 360s come that way. Give me a break.
The core is only a good value for someone who doesn't play games often and only plays them offline. Hence people who aren't in the truest sense gamers.
If your own news threads like this your a gamer, and you won't ever buy a core system just so you can upgrade it while getting charged a ton for a small HDD.
Atleasts the low end PS3 still has lots of stuff to it and is a great value. 360 is also only a great gaming system if you just like shooters and sports for the large part, which I assume you are because you think Virtua Fighter isn't even that great a game.

The bule laser diode thing has already been sortted out, and I love you just guessing at numbers off the top of your head for consoles worldwide.
All these average figures are a hoot too. It'd be alright if you just stated your opinion, but to back it up with numbers that are only in your head is wrong.
PS3 is still hot and peopel are stilling lining up to buy them so your little consumer analyst report is far from correct.

how many games does the 60 GB ps3 come with?
so add 3 ps3 games at $70 a pop to the mix and you will see now how the numbers are still in favor of the wii/core 360 even when you add a separate hard drive.
