Remember the PS3 3D demo Sony showed off at CES earlier this year? Well 3D talk is back again, and this time there's now a date for when PS3 owners can experience it.

According to a report from Engadget, a PS3 firmware update to be released sometime next year will let gamers experience "all" existing PS3 games in 3D. Of course, you'll have to shell out a few bucks for the 3D glasses and a new TV, but it sure does feel very exciting.

Here's a vid of WipEout HD running in 3D, although without the glasses all we can really see are double-vision images -- basically what the game would look like after a few bottles of beer.

The tech apparently goes like this: The PS3 itself sends a regular HDMI signal to the TV, which in turn will sync with the 3D glasses. Says Engadget, "A 200Hz TV, for instance, alternates 1080p frames, with 100Hz for each eye."

The Financial Times also explains that the glasses themselves will have "tiny shutters that open and close rapidly in synch with the television image to create a 3D impression." Sony's calling this the "active shutter" technology.

Earlier this week, Sony CEO Howard Stringer also unveiled plans for a massive rollout of the 3D tech spanning the Bravia TV line, Vaio laptops, Blu-ray players, and of course the PS3. All of this will also happen next year.

well this looks promising,im guessing it'll be something that you can activate and deactivate in game or in xmb.it'll suck to upgrade but this still looks pretty badass i can see it happening.

"basically what the game would look like after a few bottles of beer." XD exactly!!!

» Wow...

I want to play MGS4 and Dead Space in 3D. The only problem with this is it's going to hurt my eyes after 2 hours of gameplay. This is badass. Every game in 3D is just amazing.

» Actually....

It seems to vary on a per-person basis. If you use it long enough (it took me a week) and play a decent amount, by the end of the week you don't feel hardly any discomfort.

Like I said though, it seems to be on a per-person basis.

» 200 HZ

what happened to the 24 frame standard? Sony was all about 120 being divisible by 24 making picture smooth. 200 HZ just seems like a weird choice. I think in the future where specs are finally final it would be 240 hz atleast. since 200 nor 100 divide to 24 at all.

» Also is there

something else holding back 3D on current TVs besides refresh rate cause my TV is 120HZ and 60HZ in my opinion is a decent enough refresh rate to play games on. There are also 240HZ TVs on the market right now as well. What would be stopping me from playing a 3D game if I was to pick one of those up.

» Sounds great

Games in 3D would be nice, I finall saw my first 3D movie when I saw Coraline and that looked amazing so I can only imagine what devs will be able to do in the future. It might become the new "in" thing. I'd like that more than motion control, MS and Nintendo need to hurry up and steal this if they haven't already, spread the love around.

And I should have an HD TV by next year anyhow if its necessary.

» Anaglyph red blue glasses should be an option because anyone can use that.

Anaglyph red blue glasses should be an option because anyone can use that. No need to upgrade tv if they used anaglyph and it will be so easy to apply. Also it gives everyone the chance to see what it would be like before upgrading tv`s. I just paid $3,200 dollars for a sony bravia tv and will not be upgrading again just for this. I will be pissed if they don`t use anaglyph as an option.
