PS3 XMB getting cross-game chat, voice messaging *UPDATE* A clarification

Cross game chat and voice message coming to the XMB - Image 1PS Home Community Manager CydoniaX has revealed that several features are in development that a lot of PS3 owners have been clamoring for, particularly cross-game chat and voice messaging.

The reveal was given in a discussion thread in the PlayStation blog where one user gave the following comment:

When are we getting game launching abilities for every multiplayer game in the PS3 library? Why is it that the most basic of features for both the XMB and HOME get prioritized and delivered before all the extra stuff?

1) XMB - Voice Chat across games

2) XMB - Voice messaging(30 sec clip)

3) HOME - Game Launching for all games

CydoniaX replied:

All that stuff is still in development, game launching started with Warhawk and should be supported by all future game spaces now. It takes time, but we havenÂ’t forgotten about all the stuff that our users really want!

Now don't go all excited - Sony's got a lot on their plate right now and we likely won't see these features for some time yet., though I'm hoping I'm wrong on that point. At any rate, at least we know these features are in the works. Ah, I can imagine cross-game chatting now:

"I got fragged! Where were you? I needed backup!"
"Dude, I'm on LittleBigPlanet."
"Oh."

Update: CydoniaX clarifies on a few things, explaining that he was specifically talking about voice chat for Home, not necessarily all the other mentioned items. I can sense a lot of unhappy bunnies.

Guys, some clarification seems to be needed on my above comment, apologies for being misleading. I was talking about voice chat for Home in general being worked on, not specifically about voice chat across games or voice messaging on the XMB. I can see how my quick answer was taken as a confirmation on all 3 items, but this is not the case.

Awesome stuff.

Thing I've noticed is with Sony, they proudly announce what they're doing way before it's ready and slowly plug at the goods, releasing them slowly and eventually deliver but people complain. Where as other companies, they usually just release stuff and then get praise cuz it's there.

by jamesbrown900 - 2009-03-24 06:08
» it also has

Well, just because the 360 got it first doesn't mean the playstation shouldn't have it.

And to the question about what else it has that PS3 doesn't. The USB Dildo peripheral for that hentai game.

sony does work slow as hell. i dont see why it's so hard to put voice chat? and like the guy before me said yeah xbox has it...wtf is taking sony so long? it took over 12 months to get in game xmb...zzz seriously. and home...gosh get more publishers onboard and do something. it's lacking so much content and no one uses a headset to chat so u see all these f**king bubbles everywhere and it's annoying. how is there not a killzone/resistance room already? zzz warhawk room? who the hell plays warhawk? i love the playstation brand a lot but damn..sony kinda sucks in software development. maybe m$ should make the software and sony make the hardware.

Well, it's confirmed, but maybe this means 2.70 isn't as fake as we thought it was? Remember what that one dev accidentally said, 2.70 will have "new fun stuff" and will be released "IIRC, late March"

Doesn't look like we'll get it soon though. That makes me one sad panda...

Im not trying to start an argument just felt that should be pointed out. This is the first time ive come on a ps3 post and said something.

I do think that ps3 is a good system, however it annoys me that all the PS3 fans act like Sony is god and Microsoft is satan. The truth is Sony cares just as little as microsoft does, if not less.

» yamagushi

I've read your comments on the 360 board before, one recently about the ps3 being useless so it appears you are just a fanboy trying to start an argument. The main difference here is Sony is giving this stuff to us for free and Microsoft is charging you for it. After this update there really won't be anything that Live offers over PSN that justifies a yearly charge. Id say Sony cares more about their customers because 1. they gave us a reliable system and 2. they are giving us all of the features Microsoft charges for for free.

"Sony is god and Microsoft is satan."

Why are you putting words in peoples mouths ?

We Qj readers support both systems, believe me we are not stupid . We know Microsoft is an American company and the more they sale ultimately we "win", in terms of the economy, more players available online etc. etc. The thing is Sony meets all my requirements perfectly . I don't game as much as I used to so why should I pay for something I'm not using? ( To me it's like ordering cable TV and only getting the basic channels ) When the PS3 gives you all the package pretty much FREE. Some people feel like 50 dollars isn't much, but I do especially when I can get a game like Warhawk, Flower or LBP add ons. Or just come up with another few dollars and buy Killzone and enjoy online (if you find the time ). Don't get me wrong it's a great system just not for me and well many people .

» I give PSN another year before it's on par with live

Ive had the PS3 since launch, and Ive never really cared whether or not PSN had these functions. But as soon as COD4 came out I soon realized how much of a struggle it was to get into games and communicate with your friends.

Home sounded like it would solve these things, but it still isnt off the ground. These features are like music to every PS3 owners ears.

by Matt-N - 2009-03-24 13:17
» @ Yamagushi

Honestly, you could not be more further from the truth!

I'm a PS3 owner, so I'm always on the PS3 boards, here on QJ, plus on the official PlayStation forums, and believe me; collectively, the PS3 user base is very hard to please.

We're a picky lot who moan when we haven't got something, then moan when it's in development too long, but would also moan if Sony rushed it and released it full of bugs - so in truth, Sony can't actually win!

You only need to look over old articles such as HOME being delayed, and the way SCEE always get it wrong for us in the UK and Europe (the UT3 Titan pack and SF2 HD Remix delays, and lack of PSN Store vouchers, spring to mind - among an endless amount of other things - oooop... I'm off), to see just how much of a hard time we give Sony.

So, don't worry about your beloved 360 - it stands united with the PS3, in the world of... "COMPLAINING" DA DA DAAAAAA!

PS: Where the hell is Bomberman Ultra?????????

by NarooN - 2009-03-24 13:18
» .

She only said that because she's under NDA like everyone else. She's not supposed to actually say anything about a future update unless Sony announces it first. Obviously she just tried to cover it up. How would Home have "Cross Game chat and voice messaging" by itself?

by Yamagushi - 2009-03-25 04:37
» @TheDude and _____

Microsoft doesn't charge anything for updates, So your "free" defense is BS. Xbox Live Silver is free, has updates, cross game chat, voice messaging(As well as Picture and Video Messaging), access to XBL Marketplace, the works. The only thing it doesnt have is online play. So saying that PSN is free has no justification here.

"After this update there really won't be anything that Live offers over PSN that justifies a yearly charge"

How about a video store nearly double the size of PSNs, Community Games, Lag-Free Servers, Many Exclusive DLCs for Cross Platform Games. Just to name a few off the top of my head...

@Matt-N, Good to hear. I lawled.

by xInSoMnIaTiCx - 2009-03-25 05:17
» Amazing!

I've switched from a 360 fanboy to a PS3 fanboy and now know that the PS3 can have more potential than the 360 if Sony puts effort into it. With that, I'm really glad they're starting to amp up the community features rather than just sticking with self features like blueray compatability etc. If only the community truely had a say in the firmware updates; how amazing the system would be. That goes for both PS3 and 360.

» sony...

Has themselves too spread out it seems. M$ has a lot more money to throw around and probably a lot more programmers. They probably just took a bunch of apps they already had for windows and rehashed them for Xbox. Sony has to program it all from the ground, and also work on all of the other things that people are asking for. It seems like they would be better off just having a team working on debugging and only a couple of large teams that are working on a few new features. That way we would get new features more often, but less per update. I don't really know Sonys programming hierarchy but thats how it seems to me.

by Miclowgunman - 2009-03-25 05:59
» why would CydoniaX even know about the XMB?

She is a Home dev. and probably specifically Home. You think sony tells all the Dev.s about every PS3 project they have. The japanese operate on a serious need-to-know basis.

» why be a fanboy...

fanboys make real gamers sad. Don't make us sad. Play all games and be happy! (This has been a public service announcement. P.S - fanboyism causes stress, which can cause cancer. So don't be a fanboy, or you will get cancer )

@Yamagushi:

the argument that PS3 has laggy servers has been disproved so often....

Also, what do you mean with Community games? If you are talking about games like LBP or Warhawk, well they're PS3-exclusive.

And with updates like this:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/03/13/playstation-network-video-content-update-20/

it won't be long before the PSN video store catches up.

As for the exclusive DLC: With the growing userbase of the PS3 developers with think twice if they bring exclusive content to one console, so Microsoft can't keep much longer the exclusive deals.

Besides, the DLC is surely not worth paying, considering you not only have to pay the DLC, but also the monthly fee for Xbox Live.

» I agree

Some of those features like Cross game voice chat and stuff are not a big deal to me. Hell I know some of my xbox friends who barely use it. I rather talk to my team online like in (killzone or battlefield bad company) rather then talk and bull$hit with someone else. But I do see the appeal some has with it. I just hope the method isn't patented like MS did with in game music.
