PS3 will sell 100 million and dominate again says study

PS3 and Xbox 360 - Image 1Despite the current trends in the game console market today, a study by Aussie firm Connection Research conducted in Australia has boldly concluded that Sony's high-powered PlayStation 3 game console will eventually win this generation's hardware race and easily beat rival Xbox 360 by Microsoft.

The study hinges its findings on the answers of 3,995 respondents under the age of 40 to a survey in Australia. The researchers say that the country is a good barometer of the gaming world and should provide helpful insights on how the market will behave outside of Japan.

Graeme Philipson, the director of Connection Research says "Microsoft's Xbox 360 beat Sony's PlayStation 3 to the market in Australia by twelve months. Most commentators believe this has been greatly to Microsoft's advantage, and there is no doubt that one year's start has helped Microsoft's credibility as a games console supplier."

However, he negated whatever edge Microsoft has over the PS3 by saying "new research shows that Sony has retained its mind share, at least among younger age groups. Sony is still the preferred games console vendor, by a margin of nearly two-to-one over Microsoft. Microsoft has closed the gap, but only slightly, and its growth is largely in the over 40 age group."

The study says that 39 percent of the respondents said that they preferred Sony over the other console makers, followed by Microsoft with a 24 percent preference rating, while 8.6 percent said they favored Nintendo.

To date, the Xbox 360 is still the leading next-generation game system in the world, drawing its appeal from advanced gaming experiences and an excellent online gaming system called Xbox Live. The 360 is followed by the fast-rising Nintendo Wii which has led the market on a monthly basis since its release. The PS3 trails the two but has also enjoyed a good market outing with its debut in PAL territories last March.

Sony can get to 100 million again. Their last gen fanbase shows it. Thee only thing standing in Sony's way is the price of the PS3. Once the price drops units will sell more faster.

listen to yourself. the only reason ps2 is selling well is because its cheap, its able to sell in places like philippines, indonesia, brazil, etc. by the time ps3 is selling for U$100 next gen microsoft and nintendo is here and developers would move on to those new system leaving the ps3 support to none. stop dreaming and wake up.

April results shows us that the 360 dropped in america by 12% this drop must be taken seriously

the Wii has dropped by 22% seems consmers finaly are realizing that the Wii an Old-gen system

i,m positive the only thing preventing dominance right now is the Price, the exclusive software for the ps3 will come eventualy but the price must drop

cant wait for Team ICO next project,no software until now is truly inspiring on any system

i can tell you one thing......E3 2007 will be Sony,s E3

there's no way PS3 will sell 100 million with this slow start. I'm guessing it'll be a more equal split like 60 Million PS3, 50 Million Wii, and 40 Million 360. That's only if PS3 manages to pull away and the Wii doesn't die out.

the PS3 has been out 5 months!!! for a console 5 month old the libarary of games that is has now isn't bad!!!! the 360 had a one year head start!!!!

the PS3 has good games... it has been out 5 months and not a year and a half...

and the price is just enough for what you get... there are cell phones more expensive than the PS3... there are high end dvd players close to and even exceeds the cost of the ps3... i mean it's a freakin dvd player!!!

and finally australia is a good neutral country... neither the PS3 nor the XBox360 holds central base in Australia...and also it is a country in which the people actually has sufficient buying capacity.

The only reason x box is even ahead is because it's about a year and a half ahead of sony when it launched. By this time next year the PS3 and 360 will be neck n neck. All in all people need to stop analyzing about what is better and just use the system you got for what it's for, to have fun.

It is always funny to hear people from other countries reference countries like Philippines, Indonesia, Brazil, etc. I have been a gamer all my life, and I started with Atari, Nintendo, Sega, Super Nintendo, PS1, PS2, Xbox360 and PS3 Respectively. through my experience and interactioin with other gamers from my grade school years, to my co-workers now. I would say that it is not a matter of economics. Mind you, Consoles (PS3, XBOX360 and Wii) flooded my country, at the time when its priced like an old car. Suffice to say that we can afford these systems and we are not as poor as you think, I think the legions of PS3 Fanboys in Manila would agree, since most of us have our Xbox 360 alongside our PS3.

So what ? Just because the sales dropped that doesnt mean that it will fail....The same applies for the x-box360 sales drop!. The reason why sales dropped is plain and simple, people are waiting a price drop on the ps3 thats it.

Or did you think that 100 million ps owners would buy the 360 and the wii leaving behind the ps3? No no i think that at least 70% of them are waiting for a ps3 price drop, so they can buy one.

PS2 - 111.25 million

PSP - 22.94 million

PS3 - 3.16 million

SNES - 49 million

As I explained, sony HAD the customer base to sell over 100 million. The PS3 isn't selling well anywhere, even Japan.

With no price reduction any time soon and only 2 "system seller" games coming out in the next year, I would say 20-30 million sold over its 5 year lifespan is fairly reasonable. Yes, a 5 year lifespan because I can't imagine how horribly obsolete it would be in 6 years.

» New medis Formats?

YOu're kidding right. I guess they made you buy a dvd player on the ps2 huh? Did you use it or not. With the psp umd's are for games, because they are cheaper to produce than carts. You don't have to buy the umd movies just convert your dvd's.

Let me get this straight the ps2 sold over 100 million units, and made all the xboys hate Sony.

By the way what media format did the ps2 shove down your throat. DVD's, how did that work for you. I guess you think the ps1 made you start buying cd's. Sony isn't shoving ant\ything down your throat, you are just behind.

As a side note what do xboys need the 360 elite for? They are all happy with 20gigs and no hdmi, why would M$ add them. For a year xboys have said they don't care about any of that stuff. I guess you guys were lying, at least thats what M$ thinks.

by Hellraiser - 2007-04-24 04:13
» the real conclusion

The XBOX 360 has the best chance of success because it is sold cheaply as a game console and has a huge game library, the same thing that made the PS2 a success.

Japan is a tough market that is hard to understand. Here's why....

Nintendo DS - few third party games and very little variety; how many mario games can you stand? Very few games use the dual screens or touch screen effectively.

Nintendo Wii - last gen system with a next gen price, but with a cool controller. Does nothing but play games and crappy internet browser. Few games take advantage of the unique control.

Playstation 3 - we all know the problems with this. HORRIBLE LAUNCH, PR DISASTERS AND INCOMPETENCE, PRICE, NO GAMES, OVERLY RESTRICED LINUX DESPITE BEING SOLD AS A COMPUTER REPLACMENT, POOR INTERNET BROWSER, PATHETIC FIRMWARE FEATURES AND UPDATES, NO SCALER CHIP, OVERHYPED UNDERPERFORMING CELL PROCESSOR, BLU RAY TROJAN HORSE, the list goes on.

Why doesn't the 360 sell in Japan? Japanese love their own electronics companies aparently.

i was shocked that psp is only about 2 million behind ds... it always seemed like ds was totally kicking ass... hmm

x360 isn't as good as ps3 imo, but tha'ts just an opinion.

the npd sales figures aren't the bible, this study isn't gospel, and australia isn't really a great example for study... but regardless things aren't looking too bad for ps3.

just thought i'd mention, if you really want sony to lose money and microsoft to gain it then go buy a ps3 but x360 games, that way you actually send your money where you would like it to go.

having released only about 2 games worth buying for ps3 sony must be losing a fortune, but then if you look at ms's 'home entertainment' division (or whatever it's called) they've got operating losses of about 6 billion usd over the 6 or 7 years they've been open... that's not good business.

regardless why not just enjoy your game system? buy halo3 or mgs4 or dmc4 if you like, you will enjoy these games won't you? it doesn't matter does it.

» yes, always with the new media formats

Sony used to be better.

They used to be content just being part of a group of companies developing and profiting off DVD.

Then they got greedy.

The just had to have their own HD movie format and they were far behind HD-DVD so how to catch up? Force gamers who want no part of an early format war to buy into it anyway at the cost of sony's entire games division! To further enforce their own profit agenda, they also started a scam front company called the blu ray association! Basically its job is to inflate sales numbers, count PS3s the same as dedicated blu ray players everyone buys movies for, announce victory after a mere 2 weeks of better sales than HD-DVD, pretend HD-DVD doesn't exist, count free and heavily discounted movies as sales, host completely rigged forums with non-approved comments supporting HD-DVD filtered out, make absurd predictions saying blu ray will completely take over DVD in 2 years, and many more deceitful scandalous acts!

What does the dumb consumer do?

Great job sony good work! We buy eveything you tell us to!

Really makes me sick. Now I understand why honest bussinesses don't stay in business very long. How's an honest company supposed to compete with that BS?

The DVD player in the PS2 was welcome. It didn't add $200 to the cost, there was no competiton with other formats because in those days sony wasn't as greedy, and it was great. The PS2 also had many great games and it was my favorite console. I never even played an original XBOX.

Take the memory stick for example. They are only used in sony products. There was already 4 different (more popular) memory types out there, but sony just had to have their own. It just adds confusion and makes the consumer spend more money needlessly. My PSP is the only thing I have that needs a memory stick. I have lots of SD memory cards, but because of sony's arrogance and greed I had to buy more. I made sure I didn't buy and sony brand memory cards because that's BS consumers shouldn't have to deal with.

Blu-ray is a great format and is proof that people want better quality entertainment. If you are not ready for an upgrade at this time that is ok. If Ps3 can sell 100 million units, I can fly by flapping my arms. Get real ppl, the gaming industry is not what the numbers are saying. Of course everybody wants a PS3 because it is an expensive plastic box. Drop the price, and you would get half of those ppl going for other systems.

Of course, i know a lot of people who wants a PS3, but ththat is if right now you were giving them one, or offering an easy way to get it free. They will eventually buy other systems and forget about it. Maybe they will buy one in 5 years when it goes down under the bar of 300$ but then, it depens what the next gen consoles will offer at that time.

tbh look at when the ps2 1st come out ok

it sold crap, was expensive and a few games for it

now look at the ps3 its the same but ps2 picked up later in its time because of gd games and we dominated the xbox even tho the xbox has a much better online system and had better grafix

its different this time round tho even tho the 360 come out 1st both the 360 and ps3 have the same grafix's so far and online system r both as gd as each other but theres one big difference. live cost £32 a year. psn is free so even tho the ps3 cost more if u add 5 years of xbox live it adds up more than the 60gb ps3 and the ps3 had more extras like blu-ray, wireless, 60gb hdd and upgradeable, more quiet ect ect

ppl who think the 360 is cheap r wrong. the 360 its self is cheap but u have 2 buy extras for it like battery charger, battery's, gold live ect ect

this thing with the elite is bull crap

its old technology. no hd-dvd, no wireless, no hdmi 1.3 ( uses 1.2 lol), its still loud.

ppl who buy a ps3 know they r getting a decent console and value for there money. it might be expensive but if u add all the extras u need 2 buy for the 360, 360 works out more

Blu-ray is also good for movies studios. As more people get high def tvs they will buy high def movies and blu-ray is obviously the best choice if you considers longer standing use for the future. I am not saying that hd-dvd is bad, I am saying that when people see the specs involved between the two and what the future needs as far as capacity are, they will most likely prefer blu-ray, I know I do for that reason.

Oh and I forgot to mention at least Sony and Nintendo actually made NEXT GEN consoles by taking a chance on new technology and not rushing out an absolutely $h!tty system that breaks too much as well as uses nothing more than just a slightly upgraded CPU and GPU like the 360...There is not a single title on the 360 that has impressed me.

1) Gear of War - does not feel nor look next gen just a standard FPS like every other MS title

2) Lost Planet - see above

3) Halo 3 - via preview it does not seem any different than before, same game play with slightly better graphics and even then I am not impressed plus see above

While gameplay is key and the games above touch on that I can't see how people swear that the 360 is a more powerful system when even after more than a year NOTHING is jaw dropping in BOTH graphics and gameplay. Wait and see what a year will do for the PS3 when titles like Motorstorm 2, GTHD, MGS and FF titles come out.

PS3 - $600

Cables - $50

Bluetooth Headset - $30+

TOTAL: around $700

Xbox360 Premium - $400

Gold Live - $50

Battery Charger (includes battery) - $20

TOTAL: around $475

I dont see how the PS3 and 360 are the same price after all the accessories. Yea, you could throw on a Wireless Card and HDDVD drive or whatever to inflate the number and make it side in your favor, but it wouldnt be the real price of owning a 360. I dont own a wireless card or HDDVD player for my 360, nor do many people. You sony fans have a twisted logic, i swear.

Gran theft auto sold more ps2s than any other game I knew this one guy who bought a ps2 just to play GTA, when people find out GTA is coming to xbox 360 sales will sky rocket it is real simple GTA at $600 ps3 or GTA at $300 360, I see xbox 360 making a killing this holiday season with Halo 3, GTA 4, GOW, and Lost Odyssey you can't go wrong, after this holiday season any chance of sony coming back will be put to death for sure.

"I'll say you are uninformed and uneducated"

This sentence completely applies to the poster.

Blu-Ray is superior to HD DVD. It supports the same video codecs (yes, including that VC1 crap), but better audio (Dolby Surround in fully uncompressed linear PCM - that's as good as it gets) thanks to the additional storage capacity.

Better picture quality my ass.

So, the "better features" consist of adding the (pointless) SD version of the same movie to make it look like "so much fits in here", heh?

HD DVD is crap, accept it.

"The blu ray association must have gotten to you since they don't even want people to know HD-DVD exists."

Actually, HD DVD should not even exist, it's part of a desperate attempt of Microsoft of monopolizing the DRM business and Toshiba of having a standard media format under their control.

Money saver is a liar working for Microsoft or Toshiba.

» Slow Start?

Really? So...by your figures, I'm assuming that the PS3 should have sold...40 Million PS3s. In five months. Logical.

How would a slow start really affect them? The majority of console owners DON'T buy the first consoles off the assembly line, they wait for good games and price drops; if anything, sales will probably be better than the launch sales when some of the bigger named titles come out and the price drops.

Man this was clearly a study that Sony paid Connection Research to conduct. I'm a 360 die hard, but I have a feeling Wii is going to win the console war. The only way Wii cant beat 360 and PS3 would be graphics. This was the stupidest thing I've read all day and I was on Digg earlier.

» @ oo

1: Cables? $50? You don't need component cables to use a PS3, they come with the same composite cables the 360 comes with. Component/HDMI cables just help you use the higher resolution available in many games.

2:Bluetooth headset $30? That's not a require peripheral. Nice try though.

And live is 50 bucks? Isn't it by year? If it lasts 5 years, that's 250 bucks. 400+250+ 650, the price of a PS3 with "cables."

Plus PS3 60bg has it's own WIFI card included, while 360 needs a 100 buck add-on--not good for anyone like me, who can't use a wired connection...

» Microsoft and Honest Business don't belong in the same sentence

Mr Common Sense (Unregistered) says: "Really makes me sick. Now I understand why honest bussinesses don't stay in business very long. How's an honest company supposed to compete with that BS?" .......Really? --And you're referring then to Microsoft as an "honest business"? ...The same company that famously ran Netscape out of business? The same company that squashed or bought-up good small companies and software to turn them into static, money-grinders (Visio is just 1 example). The same company that the DOJ filed suit against for monopolistic practices? The same company that essentially put Be Inc out of business (only to afterward have to pay them millions in damages). "Honest business". --Like proprietary $100 20gb hard drives, or $180 120gb drives? --How about the persistently high 360 defect rate that doesn't seem to improve, even as one would assume manufacturing efficiencies would? ...You know, we all get that Sony is a big corporation; but so is Microsoft (and MUCH bigger at that). Slather on what you will about the supposed sexiness of the Xbox 360, but please don't make us reach for the barf bags by saying that Microsoft is some honest, earnest, downtrodden underdog of a business.

by damonous - 2007-04-24 11:57
» Toshiba not really honest either

Oh, and just too add: selling a product (HD-DVD player and format) to general consumers, many of which who may not be immediately educated about the format war, that is implied to be the replacement for DVD is on its face dishonest. --When the only major studio soley in its camp is Universal, while Blu-Ray holds exclusives to Fox, Disney, Sony, and others. Let's just face it... there was no format war at the outset. Toshiba knew at the start that they were the underdog, and that they would have to make up a lot of ground to even tie Blu-Ray. Now, no one knows for sure, and they could stay in the game indefinitely or even win. But the point is, that their game has always been to stay in as long as possible and hope that they can draw the right cards before having to fold. That is not an "honest" strategy. Its akin to padding your income amount on the credit card application. You MAY be able to afford the payments, but you are betting on things not yet manifested in the long-term (yearly raise, new job, other payments finished, etc), not the facts. The same for Toshiba (but not Sony and Blu-Ray).

Hellraiser is a dumbass. Your assumptions about the PS3 only make sense in the eyes of XBox fanboys and no because it has no fanbase like Sony. For them to win they have to adopt new people to the market which isn't going to happen. Also, we know the problems with the 360 as well. It's a red ring ever heard of it?

by Tails - 2007-04-24 12:26
» Blind...

You guys must really be blind to think any single console this generation is going to sell below 30 million or above 80 million. PS2 is the best selling console ever, that type of success won't be repeated generation after generation. PS2 never had a "slow" portion in sales, it's always sold ridiculously well. No console this generation will match that.

360 - seems to be repeating Xbox's sucsess and is currently doing better because of the year long lead which it's already begining to lose. It's still doing horribly outside of the US.

Wii - is currently a fad and like all fads it will die out, but with decent planning and good games Nintendo can ride the steam to a decent amount of sucess and could possibly pull out on top this generation.

PS3 - is doing decently so far which is impressive for an high priced console with no real system seller games. But with the games set to come out in the next two years and a price drop PS3 should still manage to come out on top in the end.

by Warrior - 2007-04-24 12:27

It would be stupid to buy a new XBOX 360 when you can get it fixed for $140 if it's out of warranty. How many times do I need to say REPAIRED 360S ARE NOT COUNTED AS SALES!

Sony didn't really offer to fix out of warranty PS2s so people bought new ones to replace the broken ones and that did up their sales figures significantly. I know because I bought a new PS2 after the first had the disc read error.

Everyone knows the 360 sold over 10 million because of the one year headstart, the better graphical capabilities, and the much larger game selection. Stop trying to blame it on other things that make no sense!

Same thing happened with the Sega Saturn. The Genesis was awesome because it had a much faster processor than the SNES and had a huge game library. Gamers lost faith in the company after the Sega CD and 32x add ons were not well supported. The Sega Saturn was a good system, but much of their fanbase switched to other systems. That's why it died 3 years before the competitors. It can happen to sony too!

» The real story

The Nintendo Wii is pretty much a current gen system when it comes to hardware and graphics. And Nintendo is smart because they are already making money on each Wii sold. Unfortunately it's lifespan is going to be shortened greatly by HD tvs and Next Gen systems. Majority of gamers are still living in this generation and have not adopted next gen, and Nintendo and Sony are banking on that.

The 360 and the elite are definitely next gen. systems. Microsoft is just starting to make money on each console, which means they are trying hard to push it's consoles out and start ushering in the next gen. They only had their foot in the door last gen with the xbox and actually lost money on the system as a whole. Obviously they are smart to drop out of the last gen race and they have a great advantage being out first as a next gen system, but this is also why they will be suffering in the long run.

The PS3 is expensive to buy but it is more expensive to make. Sony is not trying to push next gen because they are making a killing off this gen. The second a video game system starts to rival the PS2 all of a sudden Sony will start pushing the P3 out. Sony would be stupid to compete with itself and try to rob sales from it's PS2. This same thing happened when Nintendo had it's 8bit money maker out and Sega started to steal it's business with a 16bit rival. Nintendo waited on the Super Nintendo because it would hurt their cash cow. And although Sega had the advantage of being out first the Super Nintendo came out on top because of slightly better graphics, games and particularly sound.

Well the forecast shows the 360 and the PS3 as exactly that same race. The 360 will have a healthy life but the system that will sell the most will be the PS3. And for anyone arguing about the price, go out and buy an elite, a wifi adapter, a blu-ray player, a computer that runs linux and a web browser, and some rechargeable batteries for your controller and tell me how much you spent.

Have a good day,

kGold

» Why?

This is a ratio and not an actual number:

On any post/news/article about Sony, the number of XBox-morons-bashing-Sony is about 13-15

On any post/news/article about X360, the number of Sony-idiots-bashing-MS is about 2-3.

So the ratio of XBox-trolls-on-Sony-articles to Sony-trolls-on-MS-articles is approximately 13:2.

In my estimate, this means that XBox fanatics spend a lot of their time bashing the Sony PS3 rather than actually playing on their system-of-choice (or of necessity, depending on their wallets).

Anyway, this is my opinion and I'm entitled to it, as others are to theirs.
