PS3 vs. Xbox Online Battle Heating Up |
Listed in: PS3, Xbox 360 Tags: Live Anywhere, Microsoft, playstation 3 updates, Sony

Like a vindictive juggernaut, Redmond Washington corporation Microsoft has launched verbal attacks at Sony's online strategy as they attempt to solidify its market position ahead of the arrival of PlayStation 3.
Just before E3 2006, Sony provided an exhaustive demonstration of its next-generation OS online functionality. But Microsoft, now in its second generation of its successful Live service, dismisses the PS3 as attempting to play "catch up" in the online arena, including features already available on the Xbox.
"I'm flattered that they've followed our clear direction," MS representative Chris Lewis says. "Plagiarism is a good thing - that in itself isn't such a problem, it's what the market wants. But we've known that's what the market wanted all along...it's good to see them catching up in that regard," he notes, adding "I think the service is still hazy in my view in terms of how it's really going to work for the consumer - how the pricing is going to work still to me seems very unclear."
At a press conference, Microsoft mogul Bill Gates announced the next step for their online service, the Cross Platform Live Anywhere initiative. Online presence is its biggest asset in the round of corporate battles, according to Microsoft.
"Sony talks about the online component - the analogy used was the air conditioning unit in a car. From our point of view, right from version one, online gaming was built right into the heart of the first Xbox. For us it was the engine; it wasn't some peripheral component people may or may not want to use. It was right at the heart of the proposition then and now," Lewis says. "I think we can be very confident that our service continues to develop. It's a fully connected, seamless environment - we're in a fantastic position there already."

Other than that, sony online is just an attempt at a 1:1 copy of XBL, not a single feature has been shown with sony online that XBL doesn't do in one form or another. What XBL DOES do that sony doesn't (or at least hasn't been announced yet) is having one single profile that keeps track of your game achievements/gamerscore/rankings for all games that are tied to your account and not the game. etc etc etc...
XBL is better by far because of this, the only downside is the 5ish bucks a month (even less if you buy a year at a time)...but hey, i think that 5 bucks is worth it. And it wouldn't surprise me if in the near future, XBL Gold is made free.

ms will never do that maybe they will reduce the price but thats it, xbl is what ms uses to make up loses. as for sony atleast they now know that they definitly need to out do ms or atleast get on par with what they offer; it keeps getting interesting considering how they did the psp i suspect that out the box that it will be similar to live but as time goes on they will update it through the firmware updates.

Incorrect my friend, Microsoft announced Live Anywhere at this years E3, which enables cross-platform gaming with pc's and mobile devices. It also allows you access to your friends list and messages.

I'm also sick of Microsoft trumpting that they 'invented' online gaming. If someone came along and didn't have a clue about anything video games and heard that, they'd belive it, but it's just not true. Online gaming was a huge part of the PC (and not just windows) for years, the PS2 had (sure they weren't the best) for online, hell even the dreamcast had online. All Microsoft did was make an online service that worked and now it's as if the whole idea of online gaming didn't exist until microsoft came along, it's retarded.

"Chris Lewis says. "Plagiarism is a good thing."
Of course it is coming from Microsoft a company that their whole life has been copying features from other Softwares out there.
For example first they took Apple ideas and implemented those ideas on Windows, now they are giving to IE tabs, tabs thumbnails and other features that already exist in Opera, Firefox etc ...
So what if Sony is making something very similar to Xbox Live ...

Even if the whole thing is free, I don't think Sony's online will ever match XBL. Simply because I'm sure MS has a huge patent on the whole gamerscore/achievement thing, and I love that about XBL. And if you need a profile for every single online PS3 game you play, I won't go near it.

MS has been stealing from the start of computers from anyone with a good idea.
I am sick of this whole MS school yard yelling, I'm better than you are. I mean, come on, lets say this together kids... BETA. Sony has had the servers for nearly 7 years (IE. SOE) that could handle the traffic. So, they were half way there anyway.
Now that someone is going to give them a run for their money in the "live" area, they are yelling that Sony is stealling their idea. Talk about calling the kettle black... sheesh.
I guess that BETA for Sony's "live" stuff is so good it's making MS jump up and down. Love to see the final release then.
Everyone, play nice, and wait for Sony's release and THEN compare each of them side by side. Then we can say who is better that who. And if MS is, that will only give Sony something to strive for and make it better. And if Sony is, MS is going to yell up and down the streets about Fanboy's saying they are better. I can already see MS gloating or yelling at the end of the day.
Here is a thought, be happy, customers will be the ultimate winners due to both racing each other for stuff. Making their "live" areas better and better to out do each other. We gamers will win in the long run, so pipe down and lets watch the show.... shall we.

Updates to improve the online play for the different games, blocking modders, cheaters, undesirables.
On pc u get online play but its full of modders and cheaters.
With live u get a personality online, game scores, the types of games u play, the friends list, easy to use voice chat, no matter what u are playing, or what your friends are playing. they are continually making it more difficult for hackers, and moders to ruin our online play.
And most importantly, quality control.
I realize that some games can suck at first like, COD but now the bugs are worked out in online play and it is a piece of art online. (to me anyway)
PC servers/online play can be totally unreliable and complicated if you dont keep up with software trends.
And personally, I dont have time to keep up.
So $50 a year is pocket change in comparison.
M$ is right, they do lead the way in a easy, fun, userfriendly way to play online.
And now in the next generation of online play u can
* Download free demos of the games before u buy them.I had to buy a $10 magazine every month to get that.
* Demos in live arcade, and then purchase them easily right from live.
* Video, in September. And not like the PS2 this is full video, in game. It means video chat line. We can use it to map our faces onto our characters, (look at the artical for rainbow six Vegas) As well as the video motion sensor.
To me this is some exciting S**T!!
All of this for $50 a year!!
I cant wait to see what will be created by the developers!!!
I find it hard to believe that Sony can provide all of this for free!!
The cost to keep things like this going would have to put Sony under if they provided it for free.
I Know that pc has had these things for a while now, but the fact that it is put together in an easy to use console has got to be appealing even to the PS# and pc fanboys.
It may seem that Im ranting like a fanboy, and in truth I am completly stoked with what the M$ people have done.
But in the end Im a hard core gamer and always will be. And if any of the other gaming platforms were puting out somthing better I would be all over it.
Hell, Nintindo is my gaming roots, Playstation got me hooked on 3d gaming, PC brought online play, and now Xbox perfected voice chat in gamming.(I know pc did it first but Hands down Xbox made it totally easy on every online game they had.)
And here we are in the next generation.
Nintendo brings the wimote, 360 bring full video online, market place, Integrating the pc and 360 together online, (yes it is almost here!!). And Playstation brings, Blueray and High end pc like system performance!!
I leave it up to you fellow bloggers!
Are you a hardcore gamer?
Because what fun is a game really, if you are at home playing with yourself?

I would talk to Blizzard on that one. They have had that since Starcraft/warcraft day's. Nothing new to gaming world.
Opps, was that something MS stole again. Not suprising.
Is it something gamers want, yep sure do. But can you TM it, not likely, to vague. Has to be very specific.

And that would mean the technology we have today is stolen!
It is not stolen if is is improved upon. Its called innovation.
There is nothing wrong with taking an Idea and making it better.
The one that is better wins!! And benifits us all!!
If any of this was stealing, Im sure there would be lawyers all over it!
Microsoft and Nintendo are not calling sony thiefs, they just want some props from sony for having a good Idea. So good that they plaigerized/copied it.
The only time M$ is in the wrong is when they monopolize on something that should be available to all to improve on. Technology is not like art it should never be left as is, it should be redesigned and improved as much as possible.

We cant compaire until we know all the facts but I beleive that Mircosoft are always going to do well with online gaming.
Online gaming to me is one of the biggest factors i look for now in games.

Sony will kill them. And besides, PS3 onloine will be for free, unlike XBL. XBL makes the 360 much, much more expensive than the PS3 in the long run.

And don't worry about the PS3 price it will fall soon after the shortages stops and mass produstion begins then the War of the year in 2007 will begin when both titans get thier best exclusives and bring them to the gamers.
O ya now thats next - gen

#25 is right. Every single thing Sony mentioned at their conference can be done for FREE ON XBL. They didn't mention playing against people. Who knows, maybe Sony will do a service that is just like XBL, pay for multi, free for single.

much, much more exprensive, hu?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Xbox 360 premium bundle = $400
Xbox Live = $50 a year
Xbox 360 + 4 Years of Xbox Live = $600
PS3 Premium Bundle = $600
---------------------------------------------------------------------
it would take over 5 years of xbox live in order to make it cost ANY more than the PS3, and then, only $50 (which is NOT "much, much more")
by the time xbox live would cost "much, much more" the next generation will be here...
Bash back and forth all you want, but dont try to twist basic mathmatical principles to prove a poorly thought out statement.

yet exploded and it has been growing at a lower pace than expected,
now I realize one of the main reasons: Sony has not promoted online gaming in a serious way, that will happen in november, with Play Network launch, PS2+PSP+PS3 fanbase (some millions) are being fully incorporated into online world.
See you.

I mean c'mon, instead of just releasing negative comments on what Sony are doing, why not show us something new.
I personally never 'got' the Xbox thing; not a single exclusive game that I want to play on either boxes and no innovation whatsoever. Seriously, when I ask Xbox users "Whats so good about it?" I get the same old tired answer "Halo and Live". Can someone answer my question without using those two words?
I would personally buy a PS3 just to play Gran Turismo and Tekken.
Lets also not forget that PS3 will be running Linux (yay!) that means full access to the internet for free, not some locked down Live content. Combine it with the supported keyboard and mouse and you have one hell of a powerful computer. For many people this will be their first experience with using Linux and I hope this will encourage them to consider using it as a permanent replacement OS for their desktop PC's.
You kids enjoy paying for your s*****-fed Live content while the rest of us have full access to the uncensored world of information for free!
In your fat, greedy face Bill!

Gran Turismo > All
You know you want GT instead of Forza.
Tekken > All
The controls, the combo's, the counters etc, its just so well balanced. A game of skill to master, not just button bashing (ala DOA).
So lets make it clear what you are basically saying
360 $399 + Live Subcription $50 + PC $500(+?) + HD DVD $100-$200(?) = $1000+
or a
PS3 $600 all in one neat little box and displayed in true HD
Linux is free, open source and lets you actually do what you want with your hardware, so why the hell not use it? I think it is rather interesting that MS choose not to run Windows on their consoles, 360 could easily run XP even if just embedded but no, Bill wants you to purchase a PC and Windows separately - he's all about the money.
Bill Gates has never recieved a penny from me, and never will, I think that guy is rich enough already.
Interesting point about viruses though, if we can write and freely distribute homebrew on the PS3 then I guess it is only a matter of time before it is used malicously.
If in doubt, always buy Sony!

Just out of interest, why are Sony fanboys attacking the 360 and Xbox Live?
Reply
I'm simply stating the total cost to achieve a simliar service
Just out of interest, why are Microsoft attacking the PS3 and and its features on an almost daily basis? Have they got nothing new to bring to the market?
I have simply tried to show the other side of the argument and have backed up my original comment due to the personal attacks that followed.

Stop whining about how rich Bill is and just accept that the 360 has what the big boys/and girls want.
Get some social skills and get online to the best, diverse gaming community out their today.
You know all us 360 live fans are razing you because you just refuse to get out, get on line, and show us your skills.
I hope after September has come and gone, and youve spent 600+ and your still playing with your self, that youll wake up and pick up that 360 and live subscription.
Come on people, sony is going to be playing catch up for 2 to 3 years trying to master the live service. M$ has been doing it for years and you think sony can put together a solid community right off the bat?
M$ is also moving leaps ahead with marketplace, Live Arcade and the addition of the live video. And dont tell me its an eye toy. You dont have live video feed with your friends, or put your face on your avatars like you can with R6 Vegas. Imagine what we will have with these new toys within the next year. It boggles the mind.
And PC fans, you dont need to get one. 360 and the pc will be integrated in the gamming community, and Im sure ill see you online soon enough.
And then we can see which is better, Keyboard and mouse, or the 360 controller.

I admit that Sony is good at making hardware, the PSP is a beautiful piece of tech, that i've dropped 4 times and it doesn't even rattle....however, Sony is the most horrible company when it comes to software...Their PSP video conversion program actually inflates the size of movies and makes them 30-40% bigger then free homemade converters.....the studio used to convert songs to AC3 to go onto your MD player or whatnot is so freaking slow and the interface is horrible.....I can just wait to see what happens here....
Oh, and technically the PSP and PS2 have free online play....look how well that turned out...
M$ has been into the online matchmaking buisness since the early 90's (The Zone) and has been making community based programs for almost 2 decades and has 4 years or so experience just in the console side of thing....Sony, 0 years experience total.....well maybe EQ but that doesn't really do much......all i'm trying to say is, it's gonna blow at first.....

1. They copied Gamespy
2. 16 Players is still the limit.
3. Matchmaking is poor and waste of time.
4. If the Host of a game has a poor connection, Everyone feels it.
5. If the host decides to cheat using standby, everyone has to deal with it.
6. If the host uses a speed limiting filter, everyone in the game suffers.
7. You have no control over who is the host.
8. Listenservers are not as stable as Dedicated Servers.
Theres one reason why the PS3 online system will be a success. Gamespy is helping Sony and they have been doing this type of service for "free" long before the XBox Live system was even thought up.
Just one more to put down all the rumors of people saying PS3 wont be able to play against PC users. Microsoft has no say if gamespy is being used in the PS3. Gamespy technology can span across multiple platforms if needed. So PS3 and PC connectivity with gamespy technology will probably be confirmed when the release of the PS3 is near.

(P.S. If you promote the 360 here, your efforts will NOT prevail!!! If you disagree with someting i said, go cry somewhere else!!! Please , I would really like to know some simalarities other than it uses the internet.
2. 16 Players is still the limit.
where are you getting your info???
3. Matchmaking is poor and waste of time.
you know matchmaking is different in every game, ok you have never played more than 1 xbox game.
4. If the Host of a game has a poor connection, Everyone feels it.
thats why it automaically switches the host to the highest internet conection, and I have never experienced lag on any xbox game except call of duty 2.
5. If the host decides to cheat using standby, everyone has to deal with it.
WOW, thats when you report them and they get banned whoopty do that was a hard one.
6. If the host uses a speed limiting filter, everyone in the game suffers.
.............ok so you have obviusly only played one xbox game in your life.
7. You have no control over who is the host.
the host of the internet conection, but who cares, they have no special abilities. The person wiht the fastest internet connection gets the host.
8. Listenservers are not as stable as Dedicated Servers.
thats why not all the games use listenservers.

The thing is when it comes to online gaming live is the way to go, now and in the future.
360 gamers are responding because we are a competitive bunch of gamers, we want you to play against us. Its fun. And yes we want u to convert because we want more people to play with/against.
And when we read from the ps3 fanatics, that the 360 is crap and sonys ps3 is going to be a better system we get excited. its a easy win!
You are all talking about a system that does not exist. Not yet! You have no real way of knowing if it will be able to compete with lives service or the online games.
We already know live's service Rocks, we play almost every day. And there is an extensve online library.
And so we are enthusiasticly discussing our excitement.
I have little doubt that PS3 will have and edge in resoluton, but as we all know that dose not make a great game. Its what u can do with it. 360 has that edge.
How about taking a look at a 360 site for once. you might actually want to join us online!
Reply
Instead of paying $50 for the online service take that $50 and put it towards the $200 addtional price tag of the PS3 (Blue ray player with playstation controllers) over the XBOX 360.
Also look at PS2 and PSP(should be named POS) that was free online play, how did that do. Look at SOCOM 3 how was that online; or Killzone (who plays Killzone online) Halo 2 is still number one on xbox live!!

You can't relize on 1 system for everything. Because if you do, it's not going to last LONG.
For me the xbox 360 is the right system for me, it have everything that i wanted and it's CHEAPER!
