PS3 USB custom firmware loader released

Heads up the PS3 hacking community, PS3 coder JaicraB has released an early build of his USB Firm Loader, a homebrew program that lets you load custom firmware on your jailbroken PS3.

Developer's note:

This program allows to simulate the dev_flash from USB. Allowing a Custom Firmware. We may modify the files of our new dev_flash (USB) as we please, without running the risk of throwing away the PS3.

It is a beta version, probably find bugs. I will continue working on it when time permits me. Remember that suffers no risk to the console. All that is changed the new dev_flash'll be doing really USB.

Requirements:
Syscall PEEK and POKE.

Installation:
1. Copy the "FTP server" the entire contents of the / dev_flash the USB (the root).
2. Copy the JaiC_USB_FIRM_LOADER.pkg also the root of the USB.
3. Install the package.

Usage:
1. Insert the USB into the PS3.
2. Run USB LOADER FIRM. After a few seconds will return to the XMB. The new firmare is loaded.

You will see that whatever you do the USB will be launched. Ideal for amending RCO, exchange modules, as you imagine.

IMPORTANT!
Do not update while in Live Firmware Mode. It will reboot, setting the original dev_flash back, and then it will update! Do not update from USB FIRMWARE LOADER!"

How is downloading a game to "see if you like it" ANY different than renting? Publishers do not get a penny from rental or second hand game sales.

I bought Oblivion on 360 because I tried it on PC first and liked it. I bought Prey and Bioshock because they had good demos and I liked them.

Many other games I did not get to try first so I only bought them second hand once they were really cheap and again developers do not get a penny from second hand sales.

Had I been able to legally play a trial of those games then perhaps I would have bought them brand new.

I find it so ironic that they only made money from me BECAUSE I was able to try it first, something they are trying to stop me doing.

I wouldn't call that a horrible argument, but you have to admit that you're the exception. Most of the people who pirate games do it 'cuz they don't want to pay for them (myself included).

Personally, my rationalization s are "I'm only one person so it won't make that much difference," which, of course, is flawed because all of the "one person"s add up to be quite a lot, and then there's "I'm not actually taking anything away from them by copying digital data: they still have their game." Once again, if everybody used that rationalization , then they'd stop making games, so it's flawed too. Ultimately I accept that there are no excuses for piracy... and then I do it anyway.

Actually that is a really weak argument as most, albeit not all, but "most" ps3 games have a demo that is freely available on PSN. So "downloading a full game to see if you like it" is utter crap. Frankly I don't give a shit if you pirate games or not but at least own up to it instead of making excuses.

Nope. Not yet. But they creating a custom 3.42 fw. Peek and poke are low level commands that gives read/write access to memory

sorry but these companies i wouldn't say make a 1/3 of their money from games. You'll need a 3DTV in order to watch/play games in 3D, dunno if you actually have (none of my business).

This is awesome, custom firmwares are already starting to roll out.

I think it's possible to expect 3.42 fw to work with psJB and the others, in sometime.

i must admit, i'm leaning more towards anti-pirating nowadays, at least for NEW releases. i do have a hacked psp and i love playing all my emulators and hundreds of games. but for actual psp games i've been feeling a little guilty pirating. especially with bbs and peace walker. hence why i went and bought them afterwards.

It depends on the community whether piracy is bad or good. In our country people can only afford the PS3 itself, buying games is seriously out of budget. So if piracy did not exist no one will buy the PS3, therefore less sales on sony's end and it does not affect the sales of the games because the people will never really buy the game because they cannot afford it.

On the other hand, a community with people having money to buy these games, piracy won't be good, and thus results to software theft and lost sales on the game developer's end.

Not that I'm dumb here, just that I'm a hardware tech not a programmer...
In needing to use the Peak and Poke commands to address and modify the memory on my PS3, I would need a working JickStick? It's not said on the main sight for this hack.

As for the "Hacking is bad" people posting here. Shut the fuck up and go play your cheap used games! I pay for my games on PSP, PS3 and PC new so the companies that make them get the money. I'll wait for a Gratis Hits discount if I need to, but I don't by used. As for the ROM's I play, all of them are of games that I own for systems I own that are best left unplugged in favor of a good EMU.

I'm not alone in this. Who else here payed $500 or $600 just for a 20GB or 60GB PS3 and SIXAXIS at launch? Then $60 for that second controller? Or added a few DS3's for another $60 each? We pay for the hardware, it's ours to do with as we please. I don't condone piracy of any sort, but I sure as hell modded my Xbox and PSP to get the most out of my hard earned cash at no lose to the companies that made them.

I'm no rich prick btw. I make an avg living wage and spend what I can when I can on what I want after I foot my bills.

so this is kind of like boosters devhook for psp. I ran devhook till God Of War came out on psp, then i had to update to CFW. But this totally should work. by running the new FW of a usb i dont think the system should be able to tell the difference and people can play new games without updating. Someone should try it with 3.50 now that it has 3d.
