PS3: unlimited video playback - "no multimedia restrictions" |

That BitTorrent comment. Funny. But really, it makes you think. You all know I'm a bit of an Xbox 360 fanboy (mostly because these are the games I've known for so long), but (don't quote me on this) I'm willing to admit that there are some of us who aren't exactly overjoyed with the video restrictions of the Xbox 360.
The PS3, on the other hand - is it because it's new and its multimedia potential is unexplored? Or is it really just a multimedia powerhouse? IGN points out that the PS3 can only play certain formats (but any media player can only play certain formats so kicking and screaming won't change that fact).

Here's more about the "unrestrictedness":
- 720p and 1080p from a Memory Stick (compressed AVC format)
- PSP-sized AVC and MP4 files play OK, as do MPEG1, MPEG2, standard-profile MP4 videos (no AVI, though - but you PSP people know that)
- odd-sized videos (we assume IGN meant dimensions and resolutions that aren't really standard)
- you can't reformat videos (i.e., you can't recompress the video with another compression/codec), but you can copy them from one device to another - does this mean let the piracy commence?
Then I'll get some of my QJ buddies together and try to see if we can hook one or two huge 3.5" external SATA HDDs (or so [BOT]Bob and I are thinking) and start enjoying videos (innocent, clean "gaming" videos, of course - because we need all that hard drive space for, um, screenshots, yeah).

With all media allowed + other OS + Homebrew + Blue-Ray it's in way to be the best console ever made. But relax we have to play first.
PS: First I want to be clear, I'm not a fanboy! I have a x360 and a PS3 nov.17. But I just came form the Arcadia festival in Montreal (I live there) and It sucks real bad.
--First Sony was not there. No PSP-PS2-PS3.
--The big Hype was about Nintendo Wii. And lots of peoples was disappointed including myself. The BIG problem are the controller. You can't control lots of things in same time like a conventional controller. Buttons are missing and you can play all the games with little movement with your wrist. Not like Nintendo Ads ( with simulating movement). The worst is Wii-Sport, you only control one thing (the raquette, the bat, the punch gloves etc)You can't move the character! Zelda are the same thing in the GameCube. You got to have both side by side to see a little differences. Exci-Truck was the coolest but it get boring to quick. I think the hype for the Wii will be down real fast. You have to play it to see it's a Gamecube for 250$.
Ok! now the X360 as the good games. Call of duty 3 are F***king GOOD! I think I'll buy it for PS3. The Graphic for Gears of war was over the top! But the gameplay is medium and the way you control your character suck. Most of the action moves are on the A button, so when there is an enemy and you are close to a wall, the character don't always do the good action. So you got kill. It still good but i really don't think it deserve a 9/10.
So PS3 I waiting for you NOW!

But if you get Yellow Dog on your PS3 then just install Video Lan Client ( the BEST media player ever ) and then install it on your--perhaps RIADed--comp. Because it is really easy to stream content with VLC, I multicasted two dvds and several *ahem* 700mb-sized movies simultaniously from my system to my parents comp and my friends laptop with absolutely no lag. In other words I need to start bit torrenting Battlestar Galactica and not even worry about adding storage to the PS3. Actually Sony needs a VLC plugin for their OS(VLC originated as a plugin for firefox) then they could augh at some other company that said thier system would be a media hub.
So those of you with wicked comps just start playing with VLC(it will transcode practically anything to anything else as well) and learn the wonders of networking.

I wonder is we could also run winXP or vista? ... would be cool, but not really great if we count that yellow dog have BD-player drivers lol
