PS3: Top 10 quirks

PS3A few days ago, we were talking about the top 10 things we liked about the PS3, all as a show of devotion for our new companion. But like all love relationships, you gotta expect things to go through rough times, all the more as the relationship is just beginning.

1Up.com decided that it was time to throw all the big quirks they've picked up on the PS3 into one cohesive list, and while a lot of these probs are pretty normal for a new console, we thought you'd be able to relate with at least one item on the list. Rememeber: Always expect bugs on a console's first launch; It's as certain as toast landing butter-side down.

SIXAXIS Syncing
More of an irritation than a major gripe. It's annoying that every time you and your buddies have to play, you gotta jack up your SIXAXIS controllers if they're coming from another console.

Multitasking
We found out about this the hard way: we started DL'ing our copy of the Resistance: Fall of Man demo, only to find out that the console doesn't do multitasking: If you're DL'ing, you can't even load up a Blu-Ray game while you waited for all 800+mb to finish their trip. Have a good paperback or your PSP handy, and remember that even early 360s had this problem - expect updates to cure it.

PS3's HD cables...none here
We like HDTV, and while the PS3 was all about making the most of HD-TV technology to go with its next-gen graphics, we'd like to ask: where are the cables? The PS3 bundle only comes with standard composite cables, and while you can get a separate HDMI set, it'll cost you US$ 70. Then again, how many of us even own an HD-TV?

PS1/PS2 Adaptor
We don't really mind having to upload all our old PS1 and PS2 save files into the PS3's HDD - we had a habit of losing the cards anyway. What we do mind is that the PS3 requires a memory card adaptor to load the cards, and while there's already news of the adaptors being out on the market, we'll keep our fingers crossed.

PS1 Downloads Only Play on PSP
Good news: you can upload PS1 games into your PS3 and store it on the unit's massive HDD ala Virtual Console. The bad news: You can't play them on the PS3. While we like the remote play ability advertised, we find it funny that Sony's monster can't even touch PS1 games. Expect firmware updates for this in the near future to alleviate this problem. For now, enjoy the homebrew and emulators.

Controller Screwups:
Resistance is a fun game, but not when your SIXAXIS seizes up as you're about to frag your next kill - turning you into the fragee. On the plus side, it's curable by just jacking up the SIXAXIS to the USB terminal again before play - we hear it fixes this prob instantly.

No System Level Custom Soundtracks
Connected to the "No Multitasking" quirk: You can't play your own music while playing or downloading. Remedy: keep your MP3 (who doesn't have one anyway?) around when doing the above-mentioned tasks.

Setting Up a Wi-Fi Connection
WiFi support's always good, but not when you have to type in a 26-digit WEP on a display that hides everything you've written with an asterisk - programming launch coordinates on ICBMs is easier than this turkey. Good thing you only have to do this once, and it's nothing a piece of paper and a pencil can't fix - cross out the digits as you punch 'em in.

Being Online
As soon as you get online, good luck finding something or someone to talk to. The server's as barren as a brick (Pardon the term). What does one expect with a system this new? Like that new mall that's just opened up, give it a couple of months, and things should start crowding up nicely.

Streaming video to the PSP:
Word of advice: don't. Not yet at least, as the current videos seem to have serious encoding probs like the sound being out of sync, and crappy video quality. Once again, we're waiting for somebody to drop some sort of video encoder app - there's a ton of them for the PC, and given the Linux OS for the machine, it shouldn't be too big a problem.

When setting up for Linux, you can either leave 10GB for the PS3 or 10GB for Linux. No other choices (so one can't install a 120GB drive and expect to be able to evenly split it between the two.

(Side-bar questions for all you Linux installers out there: Can you install Linux on a USB-attached HDD leaving the internal drive for PS3? Or even give 10GB to Linux, but then in Linux mount an external USB-attached HDD during Linux to appear in Linux as if it is part of the internal drive?)

» PS1/PS2 Compatability

How about the fact that while it will play all your old games, you cannot attach game specific controllers (i.e., guns, dance pads) to work with your old games without buying a USB adapter. Not even a single old style controller socket.

» 8 hours

8 hours for 800mb wtf the 360 will pull a 800mb down on live in hour min ,2 hours maX and you can play games watch a dvd

hells bells

sony Y r you beep your selfs over again and again ???

» not

the 360 can download over a gig in less than 40min, broadband... and yes you can multitask. although saying "the 360 had a multitasking problem too" doesnt help matters since sony is stupid enough not to learn from others mistakes.

I remember when you only have to push one button to connect a controller, well then everyone was cheering how easy it was over 360's way, but looks like the 360's version is in fact better, just push two buttons.

» hum, that sums it up I suppose.

that's why I'll take a warranty ( buying my ps3 in january with a best buy 3 year full warranty of 99$ ). lol

Yeah, and the ps3 have some problems, but it's all things they can fix so I don't really care, with the next firmware updates we'll have multi-tasking, that's for sure!

I only hope that in january they'll have 2 thing fixed: 1st: multi-tasking ( or at least if we can line up downloads anyway I download when I'm asleep ). and 2nd: the 10g/+ partition! I just don't want any of my partitions to have only 10g :S. I want 30/30!!! ( 30 for sony because of the demo, video, and other downloadable stuff, also for installing games on the hardware, and 30 for linux because.... hell it's a full supported OS, I'll install all my homebrew there! just hoping we'll see some emulators soon, like a gc/ps2/xbox/ds/psp emulator, lol. )

» where did you get 8 hours from?

i have a rather slow cable connection(1.5Mbps) yet i was able to download the motorstorm demo in roughly 30 mins. that is fast for my internet connection. however this was during an off peak time and my friend on launch took him roughly an hour for that. and he has a 6Mbps connection.

by Spector - 2006-12-01 04:33
» motorstorm demo

I got comcast cable and Motorstorm took me just barely over 5mins to download.

by Shatterdome - 2006-12-01 04:34
» I wonder...

If they can even add background downloading. It seems to me that the PS3 just uses it's webbrowser to view the store and download the demos.

If this is the case, it will be using alot of memory while it has a download going, since it is not built into the XMB like 360. Chances are you could still watch a movie, but possibly you will not be able to play a game....I hope i'm wrong though...

» THE adaptor

The ps3/ps2 adaptor is out now. I caught my local gamestop manager hiding them in the back of the sixaxis controllers. Apparently, they only got 2 or 3 and they want to stock them up.

I caught those bastards.

It did seemed weird, though, that at Monday, Gamestop.com listed the adaptors as "in stock", and 12 hours later they were "back ordered".

Anyways, I bought mine yesterday from a Gamestop.

» get your facts straight

What "lol" said doesn't make any sense and is not true.

You need a broadband connection to connect to the ps3. No broadband connection is that slow.

» forgetful folks

did everyone forget that their going add downloaded PS1 playable support to the ps3 in a near future update? i guess so, be patient! Grip all you want about it, Id rather have them get full 100% backwards compatibility first before the ability to play downloaded PS1 games on a system that might have a few glitches playing it still.

Damn good thing I sold my PS3 yesterday!!!! What a Piece!

» ...

so far i havent really seen anything that cant be fixed with a firmware update. and as far as i'm concerned.. i havent really seen any problems that the ps3 is having with launch that the 360 didnt have with its launch -- the multitasking.. the High Definition.. the online system.

dont forget that the 360 has had a full year of system updates to fix everything, so you cant compare the launch problems from the ps3 with the already fixed-up 360.

by shinsen - 2006-12-01 07:07
» yeah... but

You would think they could have learned to fix those problems *BEFORE* putting the console out on the market, by learning from the 360 launch problems.

But, considering how much crap they have been getting about all their shortages and such, I guess it's lucky that we even got a shipment of consoles at all, eh?

200,000 units for the US.

by truth - 2006-12-01 07:08
» ???

RE syncing the controllers.

don't you only have to do that once, and the system stores the controllers ID?

My PS3 had so many problems that I took it back. Ive played my friends xbox a bunch and it can do a lot more than what my ps3 could do. Hopefully ill be able to get one soon and maybe get gears of war with it. Ps3 to me just wasnt worth it.

by Mr Toasty - 2006-12-01 09:05
» i bet...

thats why the XMB takes up so many system resources, so that things like downloads can be performed on the reserved space that games wont use anyways

» Get a PS3 when everything is fixed..

It's weird that Sony didn't fixed the issue that plaque the 360 at launch. More proof that the console was rushed even though it was delayed for some time. Sony is well known for their firmware releases but at the same time not a lot has been announced concerning what will be fixed or what won't be fixed (what possible and not possible). Firmware at the same time can fix or break a console, especially if it constantly have to be updated.

Some hardware issues may not be fixed by firmware but will require some tweaking of the console (multiple console versions). This may be bad for gamers that already shelled out hundreds for a launch system. If I do get a system I will get it once the kinks are ironed out. Right now everyone who has one is basically a guinea pig for Sony.

» why am i still holding on to my ps3 when i have a 360

Im really hating the ps3 right now, everything about its year late release makes it seem as if sony just wanted to make a quick buck. I can't help but believe that the ps3 is a suped up psp with a blue ray lens and oh yeah a hard drive, it doesn't do anything superior to the 360, i mean nothing at all. However, its like i can't let it go, just thinking about socom 4 and metal gear 4, its a big enough reason for me to keep mine, im praying that thats not the only reason im going to use it, but these or the only reasons im not selling.

by SteveTao - 2006-12-01 16:02
» Don't forget

The PS3 doesn't include an HDTV, a 360, and a Wii. The 360 also doesn't include a real life size of Ken. They should add these to the list of PS3 negatives. Because being the PS3, everything must come with it or it isn't next generation. Meanwhile, if you buy a $200 next generation call Wii that looks crappier than the PS2, then you should be a very very happy fan because you made a smart decision.

» counter attack

are you very sure ps3 does nothing superior to your wackbox 360 as i recall ps3 2.16 tflops>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>wackbox 360's 1tflop no comparison come again and why does the wackbox 360 sound like an old vacum but ps3 not have any sound and why does 360 leave a ring around your disk and why do i have high speed internet but can't hook up to xbox live don't call out the super computers problems without recognizing your own. thank you for your time. i love my ps3!!!!!!!!!
