PS3 to retail at $499?

PS3Gamers all around the globe have been anticipating every little bit of information regarding Sony's much-awaited PlayStation 3 next-generation console. Here's a little info that may (or definitely may not) douse the interest of many - PS3 may cost about $499.

This rumor has been circulating around after Californian developers supposedly leaked the said figure. According to them, SCEA (Sony Computers America) publishers that are continously involved in the console's development has been informed that the price is final (argh, no amount of haggling will work).

Although the rumor is still, well, a rumor (with emphasis to the word "rumor"), it is almost good enough to be taken as a fact. Considering all the hype about it being a far superior machine than, let's say, Microsoft's Xbox 360 that was pegged as much as $399, it is then quite logical for it to be a dollar under $500 (you are free to disagree, and no, I'm not in Sony's payroll).

Besides, consumers have long been spoon-fed with the expectation that PS3's price will only be equal to the amount of hype it has undergone. PlayStation development lead Ken Kutaragi, in a press conference staged in Tokyo, even stated that “I'm not going to reveal its(PS3) price, I'm going to only say that it'll be expensive”.

The launch games better be good. If not, i'm going to wait until three good games are out for the PS3.

you can play ps2 and ps1 games on ps3, so regardless of whether the launch titles are good it will not be redundant if you only buy the console (and my ps2 is getting a bit old)

now it appears you're stating that 500 dollar is quite expensive, i remember ps1 debuting at about 300 quid (uk), and this is not far off that value (although it'll probably be 400 quid just cos they're bastards).

also, there has been a lot made of a stupid financial analysis' company's (merril lynch = idiots) take on the ps3 where they stated that it would cost 900 dollar, so at least it won't cost that much.

that is, if this news is true...

"Considering all the hype about it being a far superior machine than, let's say, Microsoft's Xbox 360..."

Actually, the general opinion of just about every developer in the industry is that both consoles will be about the same graphically.

The Merrril Lynch report did say that the cost of the PS3 was going to be $900, but that was the cost to make it. Their goal in that analysis was to estimate how much loss Sony would take depending on how muuch they sold the console for. So they're really not idiots. People are going to buy this console because its called PLAYSTATION. Parents will buy it for their kids regardless of all of the issues that may concern HDMI, the processor, etc. Whether the console will be Sony's downfall depends more on the software than the hardware.

At $499, I think it is priced fairly. To get a Blu-ray player of any kind is incredibly worth it. That's been my estimation of a price for a while now, and I surely wouldn't mind it.

all i ever hear....

I really want to play games...

not watch movies.

100 extra bucks for a movie player that is just like a DVD player except more GBs of space and a slightly higher resolution that I won't notice under the title of Blu-ray?

thanks but no thanks.

If it costs 500bucks...I'm going to buy it for the games...not the movies.

I don't think that would be quite right, sony would be all over the developer if they told the launch price. "law suits". I am going to have to remind you all that a sony employee stated the ps3 will be under 425. Why don't we take his side to this, since the guy is a sony employee. I forget his name though
