Sony PS3If any of you guys are in the UK and are planning to pre-order a PS3, then you had better start saving up. Sony is apparently looking into putting a new allocation scheme into effect. If this pushes through, we'll be looking at a deposit of £150 just for pre-ordering the PS3.

In an exclusive report published in the July 21st issue of British trade magazine MCV, it was revealed that Sony is currently discussing this radical new plan with senior retail buyers as it looks to manage a limited initial hardware supply this Christmas.

With the PS3 already being criticized for its rather hefty price tag, this news will no doubt add even more fuel to the fire of its detractors' arguments against it.

It is also believed that Sony wants to use this deposit scheme to avoid the so-called 'eBay phenomenon' that occurred with the launch of the Xbox 360. This incident occurred when some consumers who were able to get more than one unit (some on deposits as low as £5) sold their extra machines for well above the retail price.

No news yet whether this scheme will be introduced in the US, so for you guys living stateside, stay tuned for more updates.

» what now

it's the choice of the retailer.

Anyway all the money you give for the reservation will be remove from the price of the PS3.

only bad rumor

» Ebay effect

That would have no effect on the "Ebay Effect" why would having to pay more upfront deter people? You still pay the same in the end. The preorder cost is deducted from the final purchase price, this blogger either reported bad news or doesnt know how preorders work. The ebay price on these puppies is still going to be astronomical.

I know how a pre-order works, and that's why I never mentioned that the deposit would be added to the price. All I'm saying is that £150 seems pretty high as a deposit, although if you take the original price tag into consideration, it could give people more time to prepare the money they need to buy the damn thing. Kinda like an easy installment plan or something. Anyway, I personally agree that the deposit price wouldn't really affect the number of people selling units of the PS3 on eBay. If anything, it might even send the PS3's ebay price higher than ever so that those who are selling can still get a profit despite the huge deposit.

wasnt this confirmed true? arent sony the ones who said this idk i read it in another forum it really doesnt matter at all if your planning on buying a 600 or 500 ps3 in the end your paying them the same ammount it would even be better if they asked for all the money for a pre order

» Im selling at least one on ebay

Im going to get a hold of no less then 1 PS3 at launch. Im going from stiore to store each day to ensure im on the top 10 pre-order list for a second third or maybe 4th PS3. then i will sell all but 1 on ebay at No Reserve. I did the same with the Xbox360 and doing the same now.

Its called taking advantage of the moment. Anyone who was lucky to sell an Xbox360 on ebay knows they made alot of income.

But to end the debate, the shortage wont be as demanding as the Xbox360 since they can make nearly a million a month.

I expect the ebay rush to last no more then a couple months,

» Well...

This plan is good and bad. Yeah they can "probably" control the problem with EBay, which if it were a PS3 on EBay will be at astronomecal prices, but preorders are going to cost a lot in the UK. However, in the UK Sony is the #1 brand so this could go both ways.

» um..

a deposit goes towards the final price..its not extra money...people who sell on ebay actually pay for the console, the whole amount, and then sell it...this £150 deposit wont change anything...

i got my ps3 pre-ordered on £5 :) now im just saving up for the rest

» preorders

where have all the brits preordered their PS3. I live in watford and no places locally are taking preorders on the console yet, only registering interest. I am however on top of the list of interest, and hence will have the first say when they do start preorders
