PS3 Steering Wheel with force feedback seems possible

We wish it rumbled. - Image 1 Earlier, we reported on Sony's confirmation that there wouldn't be any force feedback available for the PS3. Well, we currently can't confirm this next bit of news, but if it's true, it's definitely going to be an interesting couple of weeks as Sony and Immersion scramble to see how this impacts their businesses and reputations.

PS3blog.net seems to be stating this at the moment, with an assertion that the writer of the blog managed to acquire force feedback response using his Driving Force Pro:

I just got Need for Speed: Carbon for the PS3. I put in the disc, booted up the game, selected "Quick Race", and started playing with my Driving Force Pro. What did I notice?

Force Feedback!

Both the jarring rumble when you crash and the more subtle pulls on the wheel when you start to lose traction with the road. This is with a plain US PS3 and a plain US copy of NFS: Carbon. No special tricks or settings are required for this at all. And this isnÂ’t me quoting someone else, or reading into something. I felt this with my own two hands.

Currently, we're trying to see if anyone's picked this tidbit up yet. Hopefully, there'll be an official statement or something soon enough. Till then, we'll just have to hinge our hopes on the SensorFX technology of SplitFish.

Rumble, which Immersion holds the patent to, is not the same as ForceFeedback. FF has nothing to do with rumble or Immersion whatsoever.

how did qj miss this, people have been doing this for a month at least, if not shortly after the release. there are a couple of force feedback wheels that work.

I guess it's not totally crazy to assume EA left in the output code for the signal of FF in their NFS game on the PS3, this device (the steering wheel) is just merely picking up on it.

# The lack of included Force Feedback...Guest 2007-01-31 05:07
Seemed to be for the Gran Turismo series...

Sony can't stop developers from putting the support in there - it's not that the system can't handle it - it's just they have decided not to use it in some of their games....

Oh yeah... and why is this fool playing Carbon with his DFP? Carbon with a wheel - total crap... it's an arcade game with auto-counter steering... it's a joke to play with the wheel.

...then what exactly is the reason for "six-axis"?? Gamers are ditching the ability to 'turn the controller" like a wheel in real space for a stationary wheel that rumbles??! Sony truly made a mistake with immersion! ha ha

The ruble coding could be useful for future controllers, too. If more developers decide to integrade the code, a rumble featuring controller could easily be made (maybe a 3rd party one).

Hope more games go that way.

dual shock 2 controllers may have rumble feature back if sony introduce their own version of the USB-playstation controller adaptor (PC has this long time ago but most of them doesnt also generate rumble code and enough eletricity). sony may opt to correct this IF they create their own version of the said adaptor. but seeing that not too many people will use their ps3 for ps2 games they gave it less support. i myself would not use ps3 for ps2 games because 480i games that are enlarged to 720p,1080i,1080p will show/supersize all the edges of the pixel. and the ps3 or the HDTV you use needs something like a scaler/filter (super eagle, anti aliasing) just to beautify the ps2 games graphics which is not currently possible.

# The patent is for asymmetric weightsGuest 2007-02-01 01:47
As mentioned Force Feedback has nothing to do with the rumble on the pads. The patent is for asymmetric weights turning which makes the pad vibrate.

This is gone, luckily, Force Feedback is on, at least until someone places a patent for a motor turning a belt ;)
