PS3 Slim confirmed, dated, and priced |
Ó
Kaz Hirai has announced during Sony's GamesCom conference that the PS3 Slim -- it's a PS3, but slimmer! -- will be available in stores starting the first week of September, although rollout dates will vary by region.
The features in the Kmart listing, particularly the 120GB HD, are pretty much the same as currently available models, but the Slim is 33 percent smaller and 36 percent lighter. Price point has been set at US$ 299 / 299 Euros / JPÂ¥ 29,980.

I am not complaining about this at all. I just want Sony to do better, because while I have owned a 360 for most of this generation, I am not going to buy a PS3 until support starts growing for it (ala, no more crappy ports of multiplatform games).
But, in the past, as far as the design goes ... when the PS1 was reduced in the form of the PSone, and the PS2 to the PStwo likewise, there was a significant reason to call it a slimmer version. But then the PSP went through a similar transition and changed Sonys whole perception of what they consider slim.
The drop in weight was much appreciated, the size of the unit was still pretty big. That and they complained they couldnt fit another analog nub in because of space. Well, the slim opened up for the possibility of that space, and they didnt act on it. after that, it became a little to late to add a second nub, without pissing off a lot of PSP(prior to) users. Hell, the PSPgo has more of a right to be called the PSP slim.
I will go as far as saying this should have been the PSP2 with two analog nubs that are better and more accurate than the current PSP's, and it should have included L2,L3,R2 and R3 buttons as well as force feedback. But 250 just for a smaller design, and bluetooth (not to mention buying all the accessories over again?). I will just wait until 2010 when they release the real PSP2.
And now we have the PS3 following suit ... and while the 30 percent reduction of the psp slim was significant, the PS3's reduction in contrast is slim to nothing. I imagine a day where Sony releases a new console/handheld every year or two that has a bit of a reduction and takes out features that they believe no one uses and adds more crappy features they will determine at a later date that no one will use.
However, I am happy about the reduction in usage of power consumption and it has no resemblance to the ugly photo that was initially released earlier in the year. Just upset its not smaller, and still has no extra bundles like a headset or extra DS3. Maybe if I get a decent paying job in the future here I can afford to not be so picky, otherwise I am stuck waiting for another 100 dollar price drop ... hopefully by the end of next year, with the release of the PS3go.

Still not as small as Sony's consoles used to look when they released a slimmer version. They should have waited longer, but I guess in their deffense this also means cheaper production costs.
But if that is really the case, then wth is the deal with the PSPgo? An extra 70 dollars for Bluetooth? You get a smaller screen, smaller memory card slot, a unified port (is there even a headphone jack left?) and no UMD slot! Dont even tell me 16GB internal memory cost that much, either.
With everything taken out, the addition of BT and the 16GB of storage should have kept it at 169, if not dropped it to 149. Hell, Sony even said it .... its 249.99 because of the "new and shinny" factor.

the 120 gb hard drive is a nice addition.

I wonder what is the next thing people will complain about?

I really don't think it will drop another $100 anytime soon. There's no way Sony will sell this for $199, least not until PS4 is on the horizon. It will just be a slap on the face to the product.

No qualms for paying the price of a new game in order to play all my games online. Games with Trueskill ranking systems would be ruined if you could keep making new accounts on one box. That's my dollar and 2 cents because qj needs to quit with being biased and save the sh*t talk for when you're fragging people online ;]
