PS3 SIXAXIS mod: Xbox joysticks on Dual Shock controller |
Ó
Talk about wanting the best of both worlds: Gamer mmmonkey wasn't getting along with his PlayStation 3 controller because his thumbs kept slipping off the thumbsticks. The solution? He got a donor original Xbox controller and replaced its joysticks with the PS3's.
The basic idea is simple, even if the execution wasn't as quick and painless. First he had to open up and rip out the joysticks from the original Xbox controller, then he had to pry open the PS3's Dual Shock 3 SIXAXIS controller, which is a sensitive process in itself.
Because of the physical differences of the two joysticks, he also had to do some more intricate mods to the joysticks themselves. He filed off a small section of the pole the thumbstick is attached to and widened the hole in the thumbstick to make the two fit together.
Then there's the whole "fitting the whole thing back together" part, following some good records of what goes where and how it's attached. You could try this for yourselves but judging from the sensitive work that goes into it you may have to prepare a controller-shaped coffin just in case.
In case you're wondering, mmmonkey's controller survived the operation. Head over to his site (linked below) for more details on how the mod was done.

Do your thumbs "slip off" the joysticks? You must have some oiled or sweaty thumbs for it to actually slip. Pretty kool what he did but its kind of stupid he put all that time into somthing so retarded.
Very nicely done, respect for being able to do this, or atleast, attempting it. I would think twice before i were to mess with a 50€ piece of equipment.
although I do think that the PS3 controler now looks like a cheap-third party one with those 'dimpled' analog sticks...
That's awesome, good job!
I think the Dualshock 3 is a great controller, although when it gets sweaty your thumbs can slide off. I would never take it apart to do this though, I tried taking apart a sixaxis to do a LED mod and it was incredibly difficult. I decided to give up and leave it alone.
I wouldn't be suprised if his controller was full of sweat from his thumbs slipping off, all the sweat dripping out of the controller haha
respect. this is the easist thing to do, just need a proper scredriver and a file, maybe a few other very basic tools.
accept he replaces his ps3 controller with an xbox controller (he took all the parts out of the ps3 con and put them in the 360 con. so why is this guy getting praise.
I dunno. I don't have much of a problem with slipping thumbs... if any..? I dunno. I know I like the 360's grooved sticks more than the bump the PS3's controllers have but w/e I'm not going to attempt to rip it apart and change it. It's fine with me.
...you need help in more ways than a controller mod. I never have that problem except when I let someone with dirty hands use my controller. You just need to clean the controller once in awhile, not prevent from keeping it clean. Remind me to never touch your controllers then, nasty zh!t.
Someone actually realizes that the thumb sticks on all of Sony's consoles are of horrible design. Not only do they provide a slippery playing surface, but Sony seems to not understand the concept of accurate 360 degree control. If any of you have noticed, the positioning of the left joy stick is wrong, and has been since duals***t 1. In or to rotate 90 degrees (up, for all of you brain dead Fony fans) you have to fix your hands position on the controller, thus not utilizing the the 14+ year old controller design, for which it was intended for playing old school/non intricate game (these games diddnt require pin point accuracy, due to huge hit boxes.) Correct me if you think im wrong, otherwise admit your in denile. Great and functional mod by the way. You should work for sony, cause someone doesn't understand simple concepts
You're full of *****. They're not slippery, you don't need to change the position of your hand to move the analog stick forward.
Maybe you and others who say these things have extremely sweaty and miniature hands. Maybe you're clumsy and don't possess much dexterity. I'm not sure. But I have never had any of the problems you point out.
As for you calling people "Fony" (how clever, or maybe that was just a typo?) fanboys so quickly and readily, it sounds to me like you're the fanboy here.
If you really want to talk about "simple concepts", I have one for you: Regardless of whether you have the troubles with the controller that you claim you do, you don't represent everyone else.
You mam, are definetly in denial. Fony
I still miss the design of the original analogue controller that came out for the PS1, at least in europe. This replaced the original digital pad the the PS1 had.
The controller didn't have the vibration, but it had longer handle bits either side. Along with dimple sticks. Much easier to hold with larger hands. of course they replaced it a few months later with the dual shock1. I still stuck with my large controller except when playing gran turismo that supported the rumble.
if i remember there was some sort of legal problem getting the dual shock out of japan... oh how things repeat themselves.
To come up with a childish saying called "fony fanboys" Seriously do you think your smart, clever or funny. No one finds you any of these, the fact is the PS3 controller which i had said once before is a simple design that works, and which also sells.
I can't see how Blood-Black is in denial, your the one who's delusional. Seriously just leave fanboy we don't want you here ever.
Have some funky shaped hands then xbox mutant.
It doesn't take much sweat to make the analog sticks lose friction. Plus the texture wears off as the controllers get older. Maybe you're not human, but it's a natural bodily reaction to get a little sweat on them.
Don't get me wrong, I love my new Dualshock 3. But, I think the features of the DS3 in the XBOX 360 controller's case would be the ultimate. The DS3 is made for midget's hands and your thumbs can colide when playing shooters.
Im trying to see how in hell your thumbs would slide off lol. First of all I dont even think its possible to sweat from your hands, and if it is then you must be one fat guy lol (sweat out oil lol).
I never once had my hand "slip" off the joysticks. lol its kinda funny when I hear people complain about it (all im thinking is ...how??)
Im holding my controller right now dmanv2 and can move then up without moving the position of my hand at all. And omg.. I can do it without my hand slipping! AmAzInG O_O

Correct me if you think im wrong, otherwise admit your in denile. Great and functional mod by the way.

Im not in denile cause im holding my controller right now and im not having any problems, so I guess I just corrected you cause your wrong.
Go to the store and buy a logic tech controller or somthing, you act like its that hard.
Fony farmboys in denial. Shame on you all :(
A load of baby powder or flour to actually use these slippery surfaced thumb sticks...oh my, Sony just cant get it right
dmanv2 is the new Xman of QJ, the bad thing is he thinks using Farmboy is funny.
Are you messing around with your controller or your c0ck?
Ever heard of clammy hands? Yes it is possible and it does happen to people who are not fat.
Why are people here so retarded? Am I on the Wii page?
WTF!?!?!?!
The 6axis analogues definetly feel a lot lighter and sensitive than PS2 controller, but my thumbs do slip off only when i react too fast. Its not like fking end of the world jus regrip it
