PS3 Shortages to be worse than the PS2 Scenario?

Most people who own a PS2 remember the shortages that surrounded the PS2 launch. In fact, anybody who watches the news will probably remember seeing people barging and standing on others in order to get their hands on the much-awaited PS2. According to information leaked from the large games store Gamestop, things could be much much worse for the PS3.

An internal email sent throughout the Gamestop chain expressed major concerns that they wouldn't be getting enough PS3s on its launch in November. The email stated that they could be receiving as little as 20 PS3s per store on launch day. Although the report didn't go into detail on why this was expected to be the case or if they'd be receiving more at a later date, it did paint a rather gloomy picture for the PS3 launch.

This is very worrying if you take into consideration the size of Gamestop. Surely a large video game chain like Gamestop should be receiving much more than 20 PS3s per store. Just like millions of other PlayStation fans, I'm looking forward to the PS3 launch and will probably be pre-ordering one soon; but with shortages such as this - will I actually get one on the release date?

N.B. Although this appears to be true in the surface, I would advise QJ.net readers to take this 'news' with a pinch of salt. I'm not convinced about the reliability of the source, or whether this email actually exists.

Hmm

Somehow I doubt I'll run into a problem of not finding one launch day. With the large price barrier I doubt every single one will be sold out on launch day.

...

Its not that bad. My town Got 5 X360's only during Launch. So if that 20 Is true. 20 X What.... 50,000?
by - 2006-06-27 06:42:59
It's true

20 is a little more on the conservative side but the email is real. Other sources have given reason for this low number stating that Sony plans on taking much better care of the European market within which they believe lays much higher opportunity for sales than previous launches. Bottom line is that this release will be just like the Xbox 360 - maybe a little better, maybe a little worse. I read the email. It's accurate. Don't cry over it yet. Hold your breath and wait for an accurate number from Sony. That's what GameStop is waiting for.

Real or not real, doesnt matter

Considering Sony hasn't giving any store details on number of units why would you care about Gamespot's estimates? That is, if the email is real which I doubt completely due to my previous fact. In either case we won't anything remotely concrete until at least September.

I never buy consoles from anyone else.

launch day.. ha

I walked in to a store on launch day for the ps2 and picked one up, had a lot more trouble with the 360 launch than I did with any other system even though I brought the systems home on launch since the N64.

cOLD

It's a little cOLD in here guys you need to keep up I posted a thread about this a while ago and it got locked for some reasons but no one denied it. Most will not buy a PS3 at launch so no one cares there will be plenty.
by - 2006-06-27 10:32:55
Well...

We do get 2 million units worldwide on launch date, which is double of what Microsoft attempted. But Microsoft ignored a lot of countries at launch while Sony's trying to play fair to everyone. I think it's safe to say that 20 PS3s per store sounds realistic. Let's hope they avoid any major problems.
by - 2006-06-27 10:37:50
you...

You also have to consider how many stores they have. 3600 stores all needing ps3s on launch day. :/ Of course it is only going to be about 20 per store. You also have to lump in all the ebgames with them now.

Im not worried....

ive already preordered mine!

wow

if its true what everyone says that the high price will make it not sell out then it will be fun walking in and getting the 600$ one on day one with no rushing
by - 2006-06-27 12:26:23
it will be chaos

there will definitely be a shortage... come on, its the new playstation(9again).. especially with all the people that have been holding off for a year since 360's launch hungry to get their hands on a next gen console..

what?

Lets see, 20 per store, is usually for sale not counting the pre-orders made. This is not counting those who will be pre-ordering directly with them, Gamestop/EB/all others they took over. And then having them shipped to them directly to their houses. So, MS gave 5 (including the preorders) per store. Yea, there prob will be still a shortage of units, but it's better than pre-ordering and then waiting months for your unit. And as it stated, it does not state anything about next shipment, or numbers. They are just getting their kids ready for the rush here shortly when they do start taking pre-orders. And yes, some stores, i.e. Walmart, k-mart, etc, will prob have them in stock that week, due to most people going to the "game stores". Some will wait for the second batch to come through, some will wait for the after X-Mas sales on them, or shortly there after. But it will not be as bad as anything like the whole MS situation.

1g ps2s

if people were willing to pay over 1000 on ebay for a ps2 at launch, then there will definitely be no problem selling them at 600.. if they don't sell out, its probably safe to say sony has lost this one ;)
by hush404 - 2006-06-27 13:34:24
of course there'll be shortages

It's playstation. ;) what I mean is that there will be huge demand for them and no matter how many Sony ships they'll always be short.

yeh looks like sony are winning the war based on demand alone. Ps3 will be highly sought after, even more so then the 360 at launch. anyway, i've already preordered 2 ps3's since march. hahaha

Gamestop

From what I hear each store is getting less then 15.
by - 2006-06-27 14:31:00
high price...

As far as those thinking that the PS3 will not sell out because of the high price...Home theater gurus will fill in the void because to them they are getting a cheaper Blu-ray player at $600 than having to pay $1000 for the stand alone players

PS3 has a huge demand period!

PS3 has a huge demand. I made a survey among my friends and co-workers who are gamers. Out of 24 people 20 will be buying the PS3. And those 20 people, 9 will be buying the PS3 on launch day. So if a XBOX fanboy are thinking that the price will hindrance a consumer to buy a PS3 because of the price...IMHO its not, because price is only one of the factors when you buy stuffs. You might not take this survey seriously, but try doing it among your friends and coworkers. And please don't pretend because i know that you guys are still going to buy a PS3 when price go down eventually.
by - 2006-06-27 20:33:58
ill just get mine at walmart

my uncle is store manager so i'll have no probablem getting one might two sell one on ebay
by - 2006-06-28 08:15:26
$600 or not

It doesn't matter what the price is for the ps3, the bottom line is, people will pay it...so you bums saying not all of them will sell out on launch day need to get with the program, there WILL be shortages, you watch...
by - 2006-06-29 09:35:28
Maybe not a sellout?

I thought that PS3 would sellout at launch for sure, and in most territories it will however I recently found out that locally PS3 preorders were so low that you can count them on one hand. Compared to the good few dozen Wii preorders placed at the same store and I begin to wonder if the PS3 is actually going to sell out where I live, and yes I live in a city, albeit an Australian one (read: not very big city).

no

Gamespot knows nothing this early. The only reliable source right now is Sony, who says there will be 2 million available at launch in america. There were 500,000 PS2s available at the american launch.
