PS3 sales may outdo Xbox 360, says analysts |
Ó
According to Lazard's Colin Sebastian, PS3's recent price cut and Microsoft's recuperation from console failure may very well propel the sales of Sony's next-gen console above and beyond Microsoft's Xbox 360. We have seen the huge difference the US$ 100 price cut has done to the PS3: Amazon PS3 sales went up by 2800%, and analyst Michael Pachter has seen a better future for the PS3 in terms of sales. Indeed, the PS3 has greatly benefited from the price cut.Even fantasy video game prediction market simExchange has presented their predictions of how the coming NPD sales results turn out, which will be released on Thursday - their numbers are favorable towards the PS3 as well:
Nintendo DS - 486K units
Wii - 356K units
PSP - 241K units
PS3 - 164K units
Xbox 360 - 137K units
It's certainly consistent with NPD's last report, except for the the fact that analysts are betting that PS3 will prevail over the Xbox 360 this time. Will Sony PS3's numbers win over the Xbox? Stay tuned.

First!!!! Yay Sony
Yea um PS3 has more consoles shipped but only few out of many will actually buy them. Instead they should be viewing how many were purchased.
personally from what i've seen they havent sold more consoles. All video stores in Canada and the US are still way over stocked.
Xbox have at least 1 more year of selling units and i've read elsewhere that a cutoff of xbox price is announced (not sure if 100usd and 50eur or 50&50).
The price of xbox is still lower and when the elite version will come out price of lower versions must lower again at somtime.
sale b3yond
They have already cut the premium by $50, and the other ones but i cant remember by how much.
Polls show most 360 owners don't care about the failures because they aren't that frequent and are taken care of under warranty.
The PS3 price cut was only a temporary move, and being temporary actually helped the short term sales even more. The 80gb model is still the same price as it was originally, and comes with an older unimpressive game plus less backward compatibility. I played motorstorm and really don't care for it. I wouldn't want it for a pack in game.
I do think the PS3 will do better than it has been if Heavenly Sword, Rachet and Clank, and Killzone are any good though. I still think it's unlikely to outsell the 360 unless sony is serious about keeping the price $500 or below.
Um. An 80gb with motorstorm is still a better deal than a 60gb for $600. And Sony has stated they would lower the price in the future.
where in the article did it even mention 'shipping' once ? these predictions are based on sale trends, meaning yes, consumer purchases.
"

"oh its ok if it breaks, its under warranty!" lmao
I've seen people using the "we have a 3 year warranty" as a good point to owning a 360, too shows how smart a lot of these people are.
if the ps3 did outsell xbox 360 for the month thats great but you have to wonder how long this will keep up for will the ps3 outsell xbox 360 next month and so on I think a lot of people were waiting for the 60 gig to be at 500 to buy the ps3, now with the free repair people can buy xbox 360 with confidence but I dont think xbox 360s failing ever stopped anybody that wanted xbox 360 from getting one
I don't see how anybody can think the 80gb PS3 bundle is a good deal. It is better than the old pricing I guess.
I'm just happy I have the $500 PS3 with full backward compatibility and I can choose what game I want to buy.
LMAO...you are right
It is similar to people saying that the PS3 has all this potential, just give it some time...LMAO...
I just can't wait til all those 3 year warranties are up and 360s start dropping like flies. I bet the numbers above don't reflect that.
I don't get it. I can't see how you people thing that by M$ extending the WRY, that this is a good thing. It is a bad thing, by extending the WRY, they are acknowledging that they are selling a polished turd and the least they can do is extend the WRY for doing so.
Their move could be compared to me buying a car that had a 1 year WRY and a high failure rate, and the MFG extending that 1 year WRY because they felt sorry for the end-user. Regardless of the MFG's move, they are still selling me a crappy car that is eventually going to fail when the WRY runs out.
So what if theres a CHANCE a 360 could fail? Theres a chance a car could break down, you don't not buy one just incase. At the end of the day, with a library of games as extensive as the 360's, its hard to see fault in the little beauty.
I will say well done to Sony, and I'm sure this time next year the PS3 will be much more desirable, but for the time being, it is FACT that it has far fewer games, and to me, thats what a games console is for (and when you look at the fact that most great games are multiplatform, it makes sense to go in the direction of the larger library).
This is just my opinion, and before people tear it appart, I want you to remember, a "high fail rate" story does not mean the console should die, it means the manufacturers should asses the problem, and from what I'm seeing they are.
If this really is Quixand,
Since I got a PS3, probably the last thing anybody imagined, why don't you get a 360?
I think you will find it is much more reliable than you thought and has many great games available now. I had an early 360 with no improvments by MS that went 15 months until I chose to mod the cooling, and it's still going strong. If you have 3 PS3s, money obviously isn't a problem.
As of now I still do not own any PS3 games or blu ray movies. I'm waiting for the good games, and I don't really want to get games I can get on XBOX, even if they are just as good.
BEAT DOWN THE 360 MOTHER F(_)CKER
I really think it is too early to be praising the ps3's sales since only a handfull of people actually bought one. The price is high and the game selection is terrible at best. i am not saying that there arent any good games just only a few. on the opposite side i can think of several titles coming out this fall for the 360 that are going to be mind blowing. bioshock is incredible. until sony can get me excited out the games i think ill stay where im at... its a shame though since before the ps3 came out i had planned to buy just it instead of having all platforms like i did last generation. damn sony can mess up a wet dream..
"I still think it's unlikely to outsell the 360 unless sony is serious about keeping the price $500 or below."
It depends. If some of the games coming out at the end of this year and during next year do really good, it might be a possibility. Especially if, going forward, most of the games are multiplatform, then for a price difference that's less than 50 USD (am referring to the $500 PS3 and the Elite), it might be that people think that the PS3 offers more value for money. For this to happen though, the following things are a must:
+> PS3 retains its remaining exclusives and the other games are multiplatform.
+> Its Online offering (Home) turns out to be really good - personally, I'm of the opinion it will.
+> Some of its forthcoming exclusive games like Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk, Uncharted, MGS4, the timed UT3 (especially if you can use other people's mods if they are allowed to post online - don't really know how this works), LittleBigPlanet , turn out to be good. Personally, I'm looking forward to Warhawk, Lair, HS, R and C, MGS4 and LBP.
+> The price MUST stay under 500, even after the 80 GB version is the only one left.
+> Blu-ray turns out to be the dominant next-gen format.
I know the above are quite a few factors that need to fall into place for the PS3 to do better, but personally, I think it's possible. If this same question had been raised around February or March, it would have seemed outrageous even to suggest this, but now it does seem a distinct possibility.
the stores in the UK are the same. theres even dust on the boxes, meaning they havent moved any for a while.
AoxomamoxoA are you really that sad to check the PS3 stock in stores, and to top it off check if there is dust on the boxes.
The 360 breaks down like a 50 cent wh0re.
Well MCS as annoying as you were, I congratulate you on your purchase. I hope that in the next few months coming up to December you enjoy all the new features coming out for it.
As a PS3 owner I would reccomend Resistance as it has a good single player and a very addictive online play. Also up and coming games I would get Warhawk (I have played the Beta and it is again very addictive and supports 4 player split screen which is a plus) and Heavenly Sword.
how can people still buy things knowingly that the probability of breakage is high.
"Since I got a PS3, probably the last thing anybody imagined, why don't you get a 360?"
I agree that the 360 is not as delicate as some people happen to think it is - that if you even sneeze upon it, it'll wilt and die :).
That being said, my opinion is, if you really are planning to buy one, hold off until about Christmas (and most importantly, SOMETIME after Halo 3), as I think that is when the 360's with any rectifications to their current design (that might hopefully deal with the overheating issues) will come out. The reason why I said after Halo 3 is because MS might be counting on Halo 3 to push some old stock out the door.
Also, personally, I don't think that's the real Quixand above.
30% is pretty high. How about if you know that 30% of your car brand breaks down. Are you still willing to buy it with that 30% breakage.
That's not a slight chance, that's a f*cking risk.
i think the 360 is crap :)
personally if, and that's a very big if, Mass Effect turns out to be really really really really good that it would make an RPG whore like me say "i can't live without it" (like to the heights of Oblivion) then i'll a 360 Xmas time (and when I do that's an automatic purchase of Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata too) but if Mass Effect turns out to be a good and even great but not something really extraordinary then i'll go on the wating mode again for a game that will convince me to get a 360.
cause aside from RPGs i like adventure and sports games the most and i'm going to get so spoiled by the PS3s lineup of adventure games this year end and the sports games are multiplat but i will still get one shooter from the choices of Haze UT3 and COD4... so i'm keeping a lookout for the 360's RPGs if not then i'll just wait longer for a must have 360 game for Quixand.
PS3 owners are good at waiting for good games *wink*.
"...because they felt sorry for the end-user. "
Actually, Microsoft did not extend the warranty out of the goodness of their heart or because they felt sorry for the end-user. If that was the case, they would have done so from the get-go. This move of extending the warranty for a specific issue (the 3ROD) is possibly to avoid a major lawsuit.
The reason why they even foresaw the probability of a class-action lawsuit was possibly because the failure rates were indeed very high, and the failure rates were now getting very close to being announced in the media, at which point it would have been very hard for Microsoft to avoid a major class-action lawsuit. So this gesture of extending the warranty was more of a forestalling move.
...the end user still benefits from the warranty extension. We could all argue whether Microsoft should have found themselves in this position in the first place and discuss whether the extension should have been added earlier, but whatever the reasons, it's done.
From what I'm seeing, the hardware problems hasn't really hurt 360 sales. Instead the PS3 price cut has helped the console's sales rise above the 360 for the month, especially since the price cut is to phase out the 60GB model with the Emotion Engine in favour of the 80GB PS3 with software BC. Hence it's really a PS3 end of line product sale. ;)
"PS3 owners are good at waiting for good games *wink*"
Yeah, just look at Lair. Oh wait, you said g-o-o-d games. ;)
The sales trend won't last for long. As an employee of a game store you might be a bit astonished at how many people are waiting for Halo3 before they get a 360. Last night alone (A tuesday night, typically a slow night) we had at least 10 people come in asking questions about the 360, how many we had, etc. etc.
That's just one, very small store. If the same is true around the rest of the US/Canada/UK wherever, then Halo...again...will sell the consoles well enough to solidify them ahead of the PS3 for a long time to come.
I do think that MGS and/or killzone has the potential to sell PS3's, but is it enough to overcome the Halo fanboys? We'll see.
if they ship more they are sellin more because why would sony ship more if the shop hav still got them in stock
It doesn't much matter what 360 owners think about the failures. What matters is what potential 360 buyers think about it. Without question the RROD is costing Microsoft sales.
The 60GB is still the better value in my opinion, but if you don't intend to upgrade the HD it is certainaly debatable. You're being silly pretending that the 80GB will stay at that same price though.
I expect 360 to to pull back ahead during September thanks to their imperfect storm, but after that it should be pretty close. If Sony can afford to cut prices by another $50 for the holidays season it would put them in a very strong position.
I'm not going to defend the breakdown rate, thats not my job, all im going to say is it doesnt scare me as its never effected me, I keep mine out in the open and cool air, with no obstruction to the vent and I've often put my hand over the back to find warm air blowing out, but never hot. Really not gonna sit there worrying over the chance that something might happen and missing out on all the games it has to offer! If it had the PS3 games selection then yes, purchase of said console would be stupid, but the fact remains it doesnt, and all I care about it the games, nothing more, nothing less.
360 has been out longer, therefore more sales. Period. It's also got the games, which PS3 doesn't. And it's got multiplatform games that perform better. EA admitted that it has PS3 running at 30 fps while the 360 is 60 fps!
I'm very disappointed I got a PS3. :( Almost as disappointed as I am with Nintendo and their last gen console called the Wii. Anyway, my 360 has worked for 1 1/2 years, no warranty needed. :) It's simply the better machine. It can't even get viruses like the others can.

"What matters is what potential 360 buyers think about it. Without question the RROD is costing Microsoft sales."
You can't say it's without question until we see evidence of 360 sales falling *because* of the RROD. Right now, there doesn't seem to be any evidence to support such a claim, therefore it is not 'without question'.
the ps3 has been selling more than the 360 did during the same period of time b4 the price drop, and with the price drop it got a boost in sales for it to catch up to the 360 even quicker
I'm not sure where you got that idea from, but from all the figures I've seen from various sources, they've sold about the same in the same period, and have been selling at about the same rate worldwide for months.
You can see it in charts like this;
http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php
Guys when you buy xbox 360 do not use intercoolers and plug the power cable directly into the wall outlet do not use a surge protector and your xbox 360 should be fine.
"360 has been out longer, therefore more sales"
Well yes, those are the TOTAL sales. This is about the monthly sales, and it seems that last month, the PS3 outsold the 360 (no surprise there given the limited PS3 price cut).
How do you know Lair isn't a good game. Do you believe everything a magazine and the people on the internet review? I'm not getting defensive of the game. Just because Lair got a bad review from the magazine critics you think it's bad. So if I write a bad review for Halo 2 and gamepro or egm decided to post my review would you say Halo sucks? Dude try out the game before you say it suck.
Use the surge protector for everything, you turd.
dude this is soo fake its all a bunch of bull*****!! seriously though are you ppl really gonna believe this!! the PS3 sucks balls big time it will nvr out salel the xbox360!!!
Firstly, relax, I was being a bit mischievous (hence the smiley).
Secondly, I didn't say it sucks, I just don't think it's going to be the kind of 'good game' that Quixand says is worth waiting for. IMO, it's only an average or below average game, which is not good enough for such a hyped up game.
thirdly, yes EGM gave it 5.5, but Gamepro gave it 3.75 out of 5 (75%), and I expect similar reviews to come from other independant magazines and websites (although PS3 magazines and websites are likely to give it 9 or even 10 out of 10 for obvious reasons).
Since the first time I saw Lair gameplay videos, I have been unimpressive with the gameplay. Great water effects, but you don't play water. I've also read many previews and listened to numerous podcasts from those unimpressed and concerned over the gameplay shown.
The independent reviews so far seems to justify these concerns. So yes, I stand by my mischievous comment in my last post. :)
I think they're talking about from Janurary - July sale. Not the total sale from when the console first released.
Do not plug into the wall outlet and do not use the surge protector? Then where are you suppose to plug it into?
Well concidering I go into the store to buy GAMES (something ps3 doesnt have), I notice the pyramid of ps3s in the corner, and you can see the dust on them from the counter since people have put their fingers in them and what not. dust on a black box isnt hard to notice.
Just a troll looking for attention please ignore
Wii has passed the 360 in worldwide sales. PS3 is next
i dont think its right for a company to screw 20% of their customers by approving developers to require HDD use. They even allow game devs to use "30GB of data" for games.
what was that again.... "MS gives you "choices" instead of forcing blah blah blah." 360 owners now have the choice to buy a overpriced MS HDD or not play games. That was pretty smart of MS.
Why the hell are there so many ps3 onwers on an 360 website
360 is outselling the PS3? ROFL...granted it's been out for over a year before the PS3 was out so it has more systems sold in total. BUT, the PS3 is selling at a faster rate than the XBlowx711 did and it seems that the momentum is not going to stop. There's plenty of untapped power in both systems, but just think: if the PS3 has no games and has sold better than the XBlowx711, what's going to happen when the PS3 gets its first game? FOMG. F.o.M.G.!! GG buddy
You're getting nervous that the $600+ investment you call a XBlowx711 has its days numbered after Halo 3 comes out. It will be you be your last stand before Nintendo returns to glory and Sony's sales go up the roof.
its also on the ps3 site......
A) Before this was a PS3/XBlowx711/PC/etc site, this was a PSP site.
B) This is also on the PS3 page and share the same comments, so do some reading before you run your mouth.
C) The only reason why this is the top article on the XBlowx711 page is because M$ slaves are getting nervous that their days may be numbered. ROFL!
Sorry, but you don't need a sales chart for it to be a fact. All you need are the people out there saying they won't buy one now, or that at best they will waiit until Zephyr is out and stocked in stores. Just because you want to ignore the evidence doesn't mean it isn't there.
I just got Madden, Friday I'm getting Warhawk. I'm still playing Darkness, Me and my boys go at it at NBA street's. AoxomamoxoA stop being such a crybaby, we get it you bought a PS3, you're disappointed, now move on. Someone should slap your parents for raising you to be such a sniveling b ! t c h.
wtf kinda name is this?
Maybe if halo3 and bioshock both weren't coming out this year this may be true. Sorry ps3 fanboys maybe it will happen next year who knows but def. not this year.
The pyramid of PS3s that you see in the corner are not more than empty boxes and they are there for display only. when people actually buy a ps3, the retailer will take one from the their store at the back of the cashier for them! no retailer stupid enough to put real ps3 in boxes and put them in a pyramid. get your fact right!!
If the PS3 continues to sell at the same pace it's at right now then maybe it might surpass the 360 in terms of total sales by early 08. Maybe not sure we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Why the hell do people think that the godamn PS3 is going to do good, it sucks and the freakin PS3 is dead, XBOX 360 won by miles so can these analysts and sony please STFU if they think this $hit will beat XBOX 360!
------------------------HALO 3--------------------------
lol, i'll say
..i like dis guy...u sound korean... GG
AoxomamoxoA you just got owned! Also it does have games you idiot and there are like another 12 coming out from now to the end of september
Why would an Xbox 360 user be concerned that he might have made a bad investment, when, and correct me if i'm wrong but the 1 year birthday of the PS3 is coming up and as far as I can see it has NOTHING to show for it yet.
Really the issue is the games. MS are hurting as many are waiting for an XBOX 360 without issues. SONY are hurting as they have a good console but not enough content.
I have a 360 and it is collecting dust. I live in China so there is no warranty. I therefore have no choice but to wait for the falcon chipset and hope that this will resolve the red light issues. However i am very happy with the games I can play (could play)
I really dont give a rats *&% about which is the better console, i do however care that I can get games to play that I find entertaining.
Quote:
stop. stfu.
LOL the ps3 is dead huh, keep telling your self that to make you sleep better. While the people in reality will continue to watch the PS3 grow in sales.
Besides why do you think that, are you scared that the PS3 will become dominate like always.
Face facts PS3 is a great system and the 360 has hardware problems.
PS3 owns . . . if not this year it will destroy 360 . . . 360 still uses old formats (DVD) it won't last that long and if you were to get a 360 to go wireless it cost 130 and for the stupid HD drive 199 so put all that together it comes to the same price as the PS3 all you Gay gamers need to look at what will last in the long run and sony makes wicked games oh and microsoft always copies ppl they can't even think of something great them selves
PS3 RULEZ!!! The domination has begun!!! 360 owners, lower your pants and prepare to cry
play b3yond
the only people who likethe ps3 are asians
And Asians make up alot more people that the america's and europe!
What games require 30gb of data?
My 20gb hard drive is barely half full, and I have 10 games with saves, 40 arcade games, 10 CDs copied to it, a couple demos, and the pre-loaded content still on it!
So what if some games require the hard drive?
The PS3 has games, but very few good ones the 360 doesn't.
That's why I have no games for my PS3 at the moment. I rented motorstorm, and it had good graphics but wasn't fun for very long. I'm caught in the PS3 waiting game now.
There's some games coming up that look promising, but I'll wait until I read the reviews or rent them first.
Back to topic, I don't see the PS3 catching up to the 360's sales unless it's discontinued and a new XBOX comes out. I don't see that happening until 2011 at the earliest. I saw a large stack of 60gb PS3s at best buy with probably 20 PS3s just last week. That's not counting the new 80gb models.
"So what if some games require the hard drive?"
As 360 fans are so fond of shouting, MS likes to give you 'choices'. So let's see what choices a 360 Core owner will have if he/she would like to play a game that requires use of the hard disk, shall we?
Either:
+ Opt for the 'choice' of going without the game, not being able to own it and not being able to play it without going to some friends house and hoping that your friend won't be irritated as you hog his/her 360.
+ Opt for the 'choice' of ponying up for an expensive proprietary hard disk.
As I see it, if the only choice other than buying a hard disk for playing a game is NOT BEING ABLE TO PLAY THAT GAME, then that is NO CHOICE at all.
"I'm caught in the PS3 waiting game now."
Not sure if you are into such games, but you might consider trying Warhawk. I haven't played it yet, but I've read the previews and they sound good. I've even placed my pre-order on Amazon.
Actually, that's one of my present gripes. Currently, there are about 3 games that are going to come out within 15 days (Warhawk, Lair, HS), and I'm looking forward to ALL 3, and there is NO WAY I'm going to be able to afford all 3 within that time-frame without making my wife angry. :( . And if the games are good, I don't want to rent - I'm more of a buyer than a renter. Anyway, that's the end of my rant for the timing of the upcoming games.
It already is selling at the same rate as the 360 did over the same period of it's life cycle while having the 360 and the Wii as competition.
The 360 had no competition over the same period unless you want to count the already 5 year old PS2 which still continues to outsell both the 360 and PS3 to this date.
You are wrong, my friend. The PS3 is doing fine! It hasn't even really picked up steam yet. With a bunch of good games coming out before the end of this fiscal year the future of the PS3 looks very promising indeed!
With soundly built hardware including one of the better BD players on the market it has even more going for it. In case you haven't noticed many major chains are going exclusively BD. More will likely follow.
Comparing only the PS3 and 360 the 360 is currently ahead. Given its large head start it should be. But if you count the Wii, which anyone with intent to post something thoroughly thought out, factual, and meaningful would do, the 360 has won absolutely nothing.
Go play with your 360 and give us all a break!
You have an invite waiting on PSN.
yeah takes sales from asian countries and the PS3 has ***** all sales.
Wii sells more than both so go pew pew fanboys.
Hi Guys,
I've added you as Friends.

Thinker/MTK
The XBOX 360 outsold the PS3 again in July, even with the PS3 price cut. Now sony is going in the wrong direction with more expensive bundles and features cut out. Doesn't sony want to win?
Listen to me sony!
Keep the price at $500 or lower with no bundles!
Bring back rumble!
I'm not that excited about home, but some people are so get on it.
Announce what the rockstar exclusive franchise is and don't be so secretive about this crap in the future.
Does peter dille still work there? Fire his arse!
That is all.
PS3 has one of the most insane lineups right now. what the hell does xbox have besides a unified dashboard and the rrod? tell me because i would like to hear this. I own both a ps3 and a xbox 360 i admit i play 360 more. However i know for a fact that the 360 is reaching its limits. Unless microsoft decides to integrate the hddvd dongle with the 360 and starts producing hd dvd games. As far as i know up to this point xbox this generation is at its limits so face it. *snaps fingers* wake up from that zone and jump out.
