PS3 recovery menu discovered in FW 2.50

Well now, here's something that came out of nowhere. Yesterday, someone at the PSPGen forums discovered a system recovery menu for the PS3. The French PS3 owner who made the discovery stumbled upon it after messing up his installation of Linux on FW 2.50. Here's his video (most of it is Linux stuff, but it's only towards the end where you actually get to see the recovery menu):

According to PSPHax, the recovery menu can be accessed by doing the following (given that you're running FW 2.50, of course):
  • Place your PS3 in STANDBY mode
  • Hold the power button until you hear 2 beeps.
  • If it goes into the video reset setting then you messed up, and do it again till you hear a double beep.
An interesting discovery? Yes. Useless? Well... it depends on who you're asking. For a homebrew developer, this doesn't really lead to much (yet). And practically speaking, the only use this has is to recover your PS3 from a semi-brick without having to bring it into a shop.

For anybody who doesn't want to try this out (for whatever reason):

1. reboot system

2. restore default settings

3. restore database

4. rebuild database

5. restore PS3-System

6. system update

» Here.

Reset the video settings, by holding the power on button, while turning it on from stanby.

When you see the screen set up, turn it off while holding the power button till completely turned off. (Until green light is red.)

Now, turn it on but keep on holding it till you hear a funny beep and it turns off automatically. (Even if you don't hear it, continue anyway.)

Now, do it again, holding the power button, and you should hear two beeps. Let go at that point.

Try this.

» this isn't a recovery menu

» Yay!

Great news, now we don't have to be afraid of bricking our expensive consoles!

But i don't think it's possible to use this for any homebrew developing. Sony put it there to make it possible for us to fix our units and most likely they have made sure that it cannot be explioted. They can't just take for granted that no one would discover this.

» playing around

playin around with this recovery for PS3 and found a way to corrupt the file system of hard disk. LOL. but the PS3 fixes it if you turn it on again. pretty funny though. coz i didn't know i could forcefully corrupt the files system. and about the system update. it only accepts 2.50 or later firmware which in my theory is a force update, means no firmware check or whatsoever, basically used to restore the flashed files of a firmware. just like the PSP. thats just my theory though. except for the forcefully corrupting the file system. haha. there is a step.

» Help :(

Has anyone notice that there is something wrong with the video setting with this new FW update. Every thing works fine, DVD , Blu-Ray works great and sound fantastic, except my Mpeg 2 and MP4 file, the play in black and white, I tried setting the video setting and nothing work. It's almost like play NTSC game on Pal machines.
