PS3 prices will fall by US$ 100 in October - analyst

ps3 - Image 1Goldman Sachs analyst Yuji Fujimori has boldly predicted that by October, consumers may very well see a price drop of US$ 100 on Sony's PlayStation 3 game console, citing pressure in the market and the scion of a new economical design as the primary catalysts in the move.

According to Fujimori, the third of Sony's family of game consoles has experienced significantly different welcome from the industry and consumers in its first few months in the market. The relatively high price tag, which runs the cost of a bundled PS3 to about US$ 900 when accessorized and taxed, has scared off consumers and left the console trailing the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii in terms of sales.

Fujimori cited history as another basis in his prediction, saying that Sony is likely to redesign its torch-bearing entertainment system by introducing a more cost-efficient processor. He also cited that reduction in the number of parts in the original PS and the PS2 is likely to be a trend that will continue in the next generation and push prices down to make the high-end PS3 more budget-friendly.

Even if it cuts the prices, Fujimori asserts that Sony will not see a drop in the long-term profitability of the project. For everyone out there who's thinking of getting a PS3, we hope he's right.

There are a lot of parts it could do without...like that dog slow blu-ray drive....that would only nock about 300 off the price though...besides sony thinks we will buy any turd with their name on it....they even had the nerve to admit that..If they cant lower the price to be competitive they are finished...

Really I believe the magic number for sony xbox360 + $50. By october that might end up being $300 (if the '360 drops to $250 by that time).

I guess sony hasn't woken up yet to the fact that the cost of current gen games means game companies must have a bigger audience to sell to. With microsoft having the '360 out there and having billions of $$$ in the bank, no wonder we're seeing traditional sony exclusives start to ditch the platform. This could lead to the death of the PS3...

# ps3 price dropGuest 2007-03-23 04:57
You all have to consider this.

Xbox 360 is still 400 dollars for a premium console (Also got the elite coming for 480?) throw in the fact if u want a hd optical drive thats another 200 bux, so your up to 600 already. Not to mention the 360 doesn't have a media card reader, wifi, nor blue-tooth built in. (I also understand you can get the non-premium for 300 and tack it on)

Now with the ps3, 600 bux is getting you a lot. So if they manage to drop the price to 500 for 60g, and 400 for 20g that would be really good. They may even be able to do it for less because the cost of production is going down every month on the components. At compusa, the sony blu-ray player (1000 bux) cost only 600 dollars at manufacters cost.. hmmm.... and it seems to go down by 50 bux every month or so. (was at 700 3 months ago). So factor in by october after sony releases there 600 dollar blu-ray player, advances in the actual laser eye, the drive itself should be below 250 bux. The cell chip is already in 65nm being produced at ibm now, so its a matter of time before sony gets on the ball and implements it.

To me its going to be interesting to see what will happen because i've also herd ms has / had plans to drop the price, but with a new model (limited) coming makes me wonder what there real plan is? because adding a bigger hdd and hdmi dont really bring cost down all to much.

XBox 360 with wireless networking, memory card readers, 60GB HDD space and HD-DVD is MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE PS3!!!!

I wanted a HDplayer, i wanted a next gen console, i wanted a new PC (Linux), I wanted to be able to load music, pictures and video from my Digital camcorder and digital camera's memory cards, cell phone memory cards, and PSP MSduo's, I wanted online gaming, and web capability.

I am an audiophile and the uncompressed sound on Bluray was more appealing to me than HD-DVD.

SO I got ALL of that in a PS3 for far less than I could have with an XBOX360.

The benefits that I saw (for me) in the 360 - is that if I didn't need/want a particular accessory I could choose not to purchase it. If a day comes when you need to upgrade the DVD/Wireless/Memory card reader BEFORE the console itself then I could buy the new component.

The 360's been hacked to hell and back and if I want illegal games I could do that on 360 easily but if I want to on PS3 it's only a matter of time.

Price isn't what made my decision for me, it was the features.

If it HAD been the price - PS3 still would be in my living room. =)
