80GB PS3 discount at Asda - Image 1Is this a sign of things to come? Over in the UK, High Street retailer Asda has reportedly already started discounting their stock of 80GB PS3s. Quite the opposite compared to earlier reports of Xbox 360 Arcades getting a price hike in the region.

The discount offers an 80GB PS3 bundled with two games for UK£ 250 (US$ 408), almost UK£ 50 less than the console's current UK retail price. Some Asda stores seem to have pre-chosen games included in the bundle, although there are also some reports that say buyers can choose between a number of games including LittleBigPlanet, inFamous, Resistance 2, and Killzone 2.

This is being described as a "limited promotion," possibly in anticipation of tomorrow's Sony conference at GamesCom. Speculation has it that Asda is clearing up PS3 stock to make way for the long-rumored PS3 Slim.

Doubt if it's a major sign. Sony's just discontinuing the 80's.

Could be a sign. but I doubt it

Retailers in the UK have more free reign over the prices of items in their shops, especially the ones that aren't big chains. My friend bought a couple new games from a legit shop over there for half price, not on sale the shop just charged 50% less for it. In the US retailers can't just chop prices without going thru a lot of channels. That's the reason 360s, PS3s, and iPods are almost never ever on sale here

Maybe

Your right retailers can slash prices if they choose to but most don't unless they need get rid of stock. I've been in retail for 5 years & this seems like a likely option of them making room for somehting els. Unless it's just a reflection of production costs being cut by 40% I'd put money on something rolling out to retailers v/soon, wether it's the slim is another matter....
