Old and New PS3

Much has been said about the PS3. Be it good or bad press, no one could debunk that this game console is one of the most talked about machines of 2006, heck it occupied three spots in that Yahoo Buzz log. And that's just Yahoo, we haven't even scratched the surface yet since it's just one of the many search engines around.

Anyhow, time passed by like a blink. It seem like only yesterday that we we're dishing out one of the many early captures of the PS3 and now it's here and we have to update our firmwares. So for kicks, let's take a trip down memory lane when we were still second guessing about the PS3 (oh shoot, there are still some people second-guessing about it).

Someone over at TekkenFan posted some now and then pictures of the PS3. From the time that it was just a shiny, silver thingamajig up to now when it seems like the PS3 is living up to the hype. Anyhow, here are the 2005 and 2006 pics, feel free to share your sentiments in the comments section below.

This news is SO old, it even doesn't have HDMI in the 20GB version...

haha my PS3 is bigger than your 360 :P

and my PS3 looks more like a cheese from swiss!

in 2005 the hardware wasn't made.

It was soooo clear that the hardware didn't fit into this small case.

if you know some geometry you would agree with me that the inner volume of the case now is ~the 1,5x of the PS3 in 2005.

I remember now there was supposed to be dual HDMI outputs on the PS3. Whatever happened to that anyways, since I don't recall them ever announcing why that became unfeasible. Whereas I know they took the router capabilites out to reduce the cost a little bit; that's probably the same reason behind the dual HDMI not making the final cut.

# um wait...Guest 2006-11-29 06:15
am i missing something, or does the 20gig version not have HDMI out? the pics show that it doesn't, but ebgames.com says the 20gig ver has HDMI. i know originally it wasn't going to have one, but i thought sony threw it in so they didn't "segregate or shut out any of our consumers from our entertainment experience because they didn't buy the top of the line system."

yeah everyone knows ideas and features get cut as price and other factors dictate... but why couldn't sony of been even the slightest bit realistic? sony knew half the big features would be dropped and they couldn't meet the target renders...

it was all mega hype to steal the 360's thunder, "lets pack in features that will never make it, and show CG videos we can't come close to and get everyone to wait for our system"

so we end up getting a system only marginally better, and not even when it comes to gaming. it really only shines when classed as multimedia pc that happens to play console games. i mean come on what else can you load linux on right out of the box?

this isn't a fanboy rant, no i don't have one, and yes i want one. i'm just sick of being played like a pawn by corporations, i'm a good consumer and damnit i deserve to be treated with respect. announcing that the ps3 doesn't meet it's 100% backward compatibility goal with either previous PS system ON LAUNCH DAY, is so wrong it borders on criminal.

When they show the console i was so excited. And i was looking forward to the different color ones to. Especially the white one. Oh well its still awesome in black and i can still hope they release it in the future.

The one time in history $ony actually did something extra than what they promised. Of course it originally was supposed to have 2.

# Sony rethought the ideahush404 2006-11-29 10:40
and realized that a lot of people don't have one HDTV let alone 2 of them to put side by side. It would of been a needless addon that only the extremely rich would benefit from.

I don't see any problem with how the 2006 version came out in comparison to the '05 box. I'd rather have the 'holes' than 3 flashing 'overheating' lights. And the colors? Who cares, I thought the black was the sexiest from day 1, and there's still a good chance that white and/or silver will be released as well.

20 and 60 Gig versions? As far as a developer is concerned, they're still identical systems (ex: Both have a built-in hard drive, high capacity disks, same CPU and GPU, HDMI port, etc), so you don't have to develop for the 'crippled system' to maximize profits.

The dual HDMI/ HDTV 'lie$': It was impractical and expensive then, and it is now, so it was dropped; kinda like when they dropped the 'boomerang' because everyone thought the PS2 controller was perfect. Whether $ony listens to their fans, or if they just want to watch your pocket-book (and their own), it's your call.

So is there a problem?

# not really a problemGuest 2006-11-30 03:04
it's just i really looked forward to using the ps3 as a gigabit media center.

since those features were dropped i upgraded my server instead, so no biggie.

i just wish companies would stop showing stuff that isn't going to make it into what i can purchase. play it safe and you don't piss anyone off and people are happier with your product...

Please keep your fanboy comments to yourself. If they are intelligent and based on fact, it would be slightly more excusable. Your comment is not.
