PS3 Motion Sensing Controler? Big Deal...

Everybody has been pointing the finger at Sony stating that they stole the idea of motion sensing controllers from the Wii.  Well maybe that is partially true, but what about the accessory company Pelican?  We have here a video of the PSM podcast of an old tilt controller from Pelican, playing PlayStation games and PlayStation 2 games.  What is really interesting is that, the controller does have a rumble/vibration feature.  The PS3 will not have an included vibration feature in the new controller, due to interference with the sensitivity of the motion sensing.  Check out the video for yourself.

And remember kids, keep on PlayStationing.

If the Dual Shockless 3 doesn't end up having rumble, at least we can throw this video at the Sony execs for lying to us. I mean, even Immersion (their now mortal enemy) has a tilt-sensor controller that can cancel out the effects of vibration. Sony better step and make a deal with these *****s soon 'cause if they don't all Playstation owners are going to feel the consequences. To play an FPS or Driving game without rumble is something i can't even imagine. I don't stare at my lifebar every second in order to see if someone's shooting me; i feel the bullets hitting me from the back. I don't have a special camera angle to see if my car is teetering on the edge of the road; I feel the vibration of doing so. Without these subtle but necessary hints, gaming just isn't going to be the same.

Can someone please show Sony this video? They seriously need to stop saying that vibration wont work with the tilt sensoring mechanism. And the guy in the video is one of the staff members from PSM Magazine. ;)

well the ps3 controller tilt maybe more sensitive.. so idk it "could" effect it with the force feed back... maybe the vibration is a little stronger. I think sony just said that so they dont have to try to create a new way to make vibrating contollers which i think they should.

umm no.. nintendo was not pwned.. the technology is different (or have you been living under a rock since e3 ?)

Was sony pwned in this video ? YES

Why? because it shows us that sony is a stubborn child who, once scorned will act like a little brat towards a company

they did it with nintendo and they will now do it with the company that originally made the vibration tech.

its not that it messes up the controller.. they just dont wanna side with companys that basicly 1uped them

prove me wrong.

they got sued by immersion thats why they are not using the tech. what did you expect sony to say at E3, "well we got sued, and we lost the case now we cant use the rumble feature anymore." the most practical thing to do is to take it out and wait to see what will happen the first playstation didnt have the analogue sticks when it launched but later on they released a new unit with one, so who knows they might release one in the future

Sony better add the rumble feature back into the controller. After 10 min, that Fat guy from the clip got tired with tilting his hand and started slowing down. Im not fat but I am a lazy person like most gamers out there and waving, moving or titlting my hand for more than 5 mins is hard work.

The ps3 controller has more features then that controller, it has the accelerometor also. Allowing for it to detect moving the controller up and down. I don't know if this would affect the implementation of rumble technology but, i thought i should at least mention that.

# RSI probable?Guest 2006-06-23 09:30
I can see alot of ppl with RSI from using the motion sensor controller. Did you see how much that guy twisted his wrists. Hardcore gamers are gonna get RSI.

We all know interference caused by the rumble isnt true, so why dont developers make games that would support the original controllers and third party controllers with the rumble feature. I think its logitech that have the license to use the force feedback so they could make a motion sensor, vibratoring gizmo thingy for the ps3

Im not saying that the rumble/tilt technology wasnt possible for sony to make in a controller but if you guys look at that pelican controller its big and bulky. The thing not only looks like it weighs 10 lbs but is huge. People that have actually gotten their hands on sony's controller have said its light and feels good to use.

Dude who cares. That becasue that not the real ps1 controller. Also it have the rumbler in it becasue of that controller size. It stll a very good thing for PS3 to have.

And I wont use it tho, lol. But PS3 controller is more then that it can be wireless like already controllers I know. But stll that how it suppose to be done so there.

And they changed the r2 and l2 buttions makeing them bigger. And they did other stuff to the controller to make it better.

And by the way this is the first time Sony made the main controller for the next PS to have the motion and tlit in it.

And dont worry I think there gonna add the rumbler as well. Just wait for tgs for that.

And really it just a controller it the console and whats in the console where all the love sould be and for what everything that is in the console it got next gen and of whole heck alot of lovein, lol.

Altho yeah the new controller owns too, lol.

Playing GT4 he mentions that its pretty tiring. Thats the problem I see the Wii is faced with.

At first I though the wii was the best thing since sliced bread but the more I think of it the more I disagree.

I think that just like light guns and steering wheels that once the buzz wears off people arent going to be so keen. Playing for like 15/30mins is going to leave your arms very very tired.

But the wireless contol could have sommit to do with motion control but I think its all bull.

# ps3 crapGuest 2006-06-23 12:33
wow ps3 controller is crap, i know they got sued and fanboys believed their excuse, which is about a fifth of all sony gamers by the way, but still they could of added a different rumble technology, not only did they copy nintendo and chose such a low tech thats been around for 10 years even in gameboy color but they totally *****ed up at originality too, this type of $hit is not meant for playstation but the wii, it would be unconventional and impractible to use ps3 controller for games that used its tacked on gimmick

Immersion Sued Sony for a bunch of money and won, Microsoft bought up a good 30% of Immersion when Immersion tried to sue them. THats why Sony has no rumble in the controller. Why would you expect Sony to trust a company which cost them a good bundle of money and is now partially owned by their competitor????

# Meh..Guest 2006-06-23 13:15
Chances are Sony will stike a deal with eDimension for their Vibration...

I don't think Sony would take out vibration or bring it in at a later time... Immersion want's Sony's support but Sony won't give it to them.. so like articles before, Revenue's for Immersion are going to decline something major. Think about it... 100million plus DS2 controller's using their technology .... how much revenue is that for the company if Sony goes through with the deal? Alot...

So really... Sony has nothing to lose - I don't use Vibration on my wireless 360 controllers... there's no point... I'm too distracted playing the games then wondering if my hands are vibrating...

If Sony add's vibration in the controller.. then good, but if not... it's not the end of the world... the Playstation 3 library of games can compensate for lack of novelty vibration.

They certainly however did not copy Nintendo. CSony patented a motion sensing controller back in like 1999 or so.

Lol, I saw PSM at the end of this, and that however is a big deal to me. I trust that magazine. (Well not with everything). But if this guy's writing for it, I'm going to see some serious bashing about the past which has little to no relevance to the future of the PS3. Owell.

# tilt = not 6 degreesGuest 2006-06-24 04:38
it's not so much tilt sensors that don't work well with rumble, but accellerometers . And the new PS3 controller uses that to sense movement along the z,y,x axis. The tilt controller only senses rotation along those axis, which doesn't have quite as much trouble with rumble at all.

Gosh, how exhausting ignorance can be.

# Not really surprised.captainX 2006-06-24 05:03
Most of Nintendo's innovations have come from somewhere- the thing is that they know when the industry is ready for them. They *****ed up with the Virtual Boy, but they won't with the Wii- the industry is ready for the change. As for Sony, they are really floundering here. Terrible greasy PR- such gems as 'We invented 3D and Nintendo copied us' and 'We will sell 5 million PS3s without games' are sinking them.

What about the Miscrosoft PC gamepad, my mate has one, used to play motocross madness, fairly good fun :P

Still the new PS3 controller is quite an improvement over the Dualshock 2 (thank god there are triggers now + slightly elevated joysticks), and I dont think rumble is much of a concern. I play mostley PC games, and 100% rumble isnt a problem, its a benifit, no fumblimg when im going for an awp shot in CS.

Still rumble is somthing that is considered in every new console, so sony should just settle this crap n` go for some gyro rumble tech.

And can those damn nintendo, Xbox fanboys pipe down. Sony didnt 'rip off' nintendo, the gyro tech is alot different to the wii's motion sensor (which mind you can go ape if you move the controller out of the sensors range!).

All sony has done is utilised technology that has been out there for years.... Sony may be the barstard corporation, but they do listen to their users (hence the Batrang :P), and do make good quality prouducts :D

Im no Sony fanboy, and I do like Nintendo n` Xbox, but there is a serious amount of flak floating round round the net nowdays about the 'next gen' consoles. I think i`ll stick with PC's as my 1st preference :P

I heard while playing socom 3 that Sony got sued for 90 million from a privot inventor who created the rumble motor and offered to sell it to sony, and they declined but used his idea in the ps2. SO the dude won and sony didnt add the rumble feature. That makes more sense then the 'mess with tthe motion' thing, but i think i would have heard it more, and they could always develop a different kind of motor...

Sony just doesn't want to lose/dish out more money on the PS3.....if they put in rumble then they have to pay a licensing fee or some sh*t for each controler they make, either rasing the price of the ps3 more, or making them losemore money.

Tilt is useless, very nice and novel idea, but for most gamers, too much of a bother....especially as a steering wheel, as you have to hold it out in front of you in a precise method and rotate it, making sure not to tilt it forward or back....very strenuous to say the least.....gimme a real steering wheel that I can rest my hands and let the wheel support me, not the other way around....

# sony liedBigperm 2006-06-26 05:23
Get the facts straight. The reason there is no rumble is not becasue of interferance. Its becasue sony is in a lawsuit for the rumble technology becasue they didnt pay for it. It has nothing to do with interferance. Its just Sony lies, come on..we should be used to it by now ffs.

Just look at motorstorms "real time demo" Last year, in comparison to this years real time demo. Hahaha

Thank god sony has so many die hard fans, blind to the fact that have and are getting lied to. Becasue if they dont solve these issues with immersion, then the ps2 will get pulled from the shelves since it contains immersions technology. And sony still needs the ps2 to cover losses (200 rumored per console) of the ps3.
