PS3 may get Freeview programmable TV by early '08 |
Ó
UK outfit MCV predicted earlier that the Sony PlayStation 3 might become an integral part of Freeview's advent, and they may be right on as a bit of confirmation was made from New Zealand recently.Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand boss Warwick Light told The Press that the PS3 camp is hoping to seal the deal to carry media from terrestrial broadcasts in order to transform the console into a programmable TV tuner.
"We're (also) hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service (expected to be in March) – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder," Light says.
The move has been deemed as a very feasible one in a technical perspective as data input could be channeled from one of the PS3's USB ports and stored in the hard drive.
This leads Light to conclude that their console is an "incredible transformer" because "we (Sony) can transform the PS3 capabilities so as to meet people's changing entertainment needs."
Light even went far enough to dispute the PS3's classification as a game console. He says "a lot of people think that the PS3 is just a games machine. It's not a games machine. Well (laughs), it is, but it isn't (laughs again). It's a future-proofed super computer."

"It's a future-proofed super computer."
your damned right it is....
i was upset when i saw that it didnt come with a coax jack to start with.. but this is the next best thing i guess!
Only a company like sony can make a product that can last a very long time and not just for gaming entertainment but also home and high def entertainment. Too bad you cant say the same with the Xbox 360 since it vwill probably get the ring of death when you start the damn box. lol
microsoft annouced while ago about their IPTV service... I don't know what happened to this... can someone tell me? anyway I don't want a TV service by internet.. I want my own digital cable entertaintment that have all channels... not another service... with a TIVO like service...this feature is what I wanted always... not music in game... this is what I really wanted... XMB in game the only thing I want is the PSN... to send and receive message when I use the blueray player.. not just for games... anyway, at topic... I don't know what they do because an usb tuner will look a little ugly with the cable in the front but hey... is sony... they make almost all beautiful their gadgets, not the sofware but yes in the hardware... so.. let's see
The PS3 just gets better and better.
the TIVO would be sweet!
I have been waiting for this myself. I have IO digital cable i know the DVDR can record shows but if my PS3 can do it why spend another 10 bucks a month to just get it for free, assuming it is. Good sony keep up the good work.
"We're (also) hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service (expected to be in March)"
But Freeview already is terrestrial broadcasting. Thats what its all about and i can switch on my TV now and watch stuff on Freeview.
So that means you could probably watch live tv or prerecorded programs over the internet on the PSP from the PS3! That would be great!
but where do you live?
"Freeview is the operator of free digital terrestrial television in the United Kingdom, using the DVB-T standard. The Freeview brand name, owned by DTV Service"
Freeview is just a brand name, one that hasn't launched globally (but is heading that way as it moves into more and more countries). Yes it has been 'out' here in the UK for ages but thats only because DTV Services Ltd took over the licensing from the defunct ITV Digital (which took over from a broke ONdigital)
Eh, this is cool and all but i bought the playstation 3 to play games. Its like they're compensating for the lackluster of good game, atleast they're trying though. I mean, i guess its good that they are still picking up on other aspects of the PS3.
in September...i forget the adverts but i think it was then
it looks like sony is slowly turning the ps3 into a super awesome locationfree player. i already have the locationfree player and it will be pretty much useless if it can stream tv to the psp.
I wish I could hook up my Sky+ box with my PS3.
Well i hope that you are all aware that you can already do this on the PS3. >>

would you rather they not compensate for the games?
if i install this stuff will i
a) have to reformat my hard drive hence losing my gamesaves, games, trailers, music, etc
and
b) once i put it all on, will i be able to watch it all from my psp???
Of which requires gentoo and a compatible tv box,and I dont know about you,but gentoo is a ***** to install.even people used to linux cant install gentoo.
