PS3 may get a price cut this summer, says Pachter |
Ó
Here's yet another prediction from Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. Last time, it was about the Wii outselling the PS3 by a huge margin - now it's about Sony considering a price cut for their arguably expensive PS3.The prediction itself is based on the recent drop of the PS3's production costs, with the ultraviolet diodes going cheap. Even with the drop, however, there's still a wide chasm between the actual selling price and the production price, so we're not sure how it all figures out.
Michael Pachter also reiterated that the PS2 will still be alive and kicking even in the midst of all the powerful, next-gen consoles - it might even be the most popular this season, with the influx of movie tie-in games proving a hit with the videogaming masses. He puts it like so:
"Over the next four months, we expect the PS2 versions of Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, Ratatouille, Transformers and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to sell more units than on any other platforms."
What do you guys think? It'd REALLY be awful nice of Sony to give their shiny black console a price cut, but it's also good that they're not abandoning the PlayStation 2.

the japanese dont leave their console: Sony with the PS2 and Nintendo with GBA and Gamecube. Only Microsoft leave its console after few years.
Nintendo left the N64 when the GC arrived, and Zelda was the last big game for the GC, and now the GC has been left in favour of the Wii. The fact is, it is the market leading format which can continue into the next generation. The GBA was a market leader, the Playstation and PS2 were market leaders, hence they survived well into the next gen. The N64 and GC were not, the XBox was not, therefore support from Nintendo and MS switch to their new consoles.
...there seems to be a prediction from Michael Pachter being reported almost daily. Why do so many hang on his every word?
I think they should make a price drop when all the good games come ut and apparently quiet a few are coming out next month so thats the time. I bet microsft make a price cut too though to further hurt sony. I recon it will be a $50/£25 price cut.
The only reason the PS2 is still around is because the PS3 is failing and the PS2 still makes money. It has nothing to do with sony doing you a favor. The XBOX was an expensive machine to manufacture and sell for $130, plus MS had contract disputes with Nividia.
Sony can't afford to cut the PS3 price because they lose over $100 on every unit sold, yet the $600 price is hurting the sales. Looks like they're screwed no matter what they do.
"The only reason the PS2 is still around is because the PS3 is failing and the PS2 still makes money. It has nothing to do with sony doing you a favor." Then the PS2 was failing, while the original Playstation sold well at the start of last gen? Well, we all know how that gen eventually turned out...
Mister Common Sense you just got pwned bigtime!!!! Stupido!
If Sony was REALLY losing so much money making the PS3, they wouldn't waste their time making it. THINK!!! The PS3 has been in production for several years, they already knew exactly how much it would cost to manufacture such a console! Besides, has anyone EVER heard of wholesale? Just throwin that out there...
Money is not to be made making systems. It is made selling games. Nintendo is the only one that has made money selling systems. (But you get what you pay for) Nintendo is not next gen. Google (Ps3 production cost) if you dont believe it. $800-$840 to make 60 gig model.
panasonic is selling their bluray player for $599. Since Sony is more focused on the format war, they would prolly undercut panny with the ps3 as the cheapest bluray player.
Yes, but all those cost estimates are just that: estimates. Just because a research firm pops the lid, catalogues all the parts, and then assigns them a market value, doesn't mean that they're right. It means that they have made a cost estimate on those parts based upon what manufacturers/suppliers of those same parts have been known to sell them for in mass quantity. However, that doesn't mean that Sony didn't arrange for an even better cost structure. Remember, when Sony (with a PROVEN 10-yr per-console history) says that they have want an Nvidia part for their new console (in this case, PS3), Nvidia needs to factor-in how much they will make by the end of 10yrs (not 1 or even 5). So, this could mean even cheaper than normal costs. Whereas a PC-card manufacturer might pay more per-part for a lesser video chip, Sony might get the Rolls Royce part for next to nothing, since the contract will still give Nvidia a generous price for the part in year 7 when they can make the chip for a handful of dollars. (I use Nvidia as an example, although it could be any part in the console inventory.)
at least -$100 and couple it with a game. otherwise its to little.
Actually SONY they have just announced 2 BILLION LOSES from the game division go look up on google..
I've only been around this forum for 1 month and the only UNcommon sense postings I see are from this guy calling him self Mr common sense man!Its like he is Microsoft's attorny or something...man!! talking about irony...
The PS2 never had the lack of demand the PS3 had post launch. Everyone I knew wanted a PS2, but nobody could find one for like 6 months. At the time the only competition was the dreamcast, which was pretty inferior. The PS2 managed to beat Nintendo and XBOX by a year and get the most games too. The PS3's demand was almost totally gone and they were sitting on store shelves right after christmas the same year. There is a big difference. Take a business class since I have no time to teach retards. If the PS3 had no blu gay, cost $400, and launched near the XBOX 360 launch, it would be up to 11 million sales easily with a good game selection, and Mister Common Sense here would be a happy PS3 owner with it sitting by his PS2! Even sony's own David Jaffe said he would have taken out the blu ray! You people are completely hopeless, even when I try to show you the truth.
