Sony PlayStation 3 - Image 1

Here's some great news for PS3 owners who don't want to update their consoles to firmware 2.70 but still have access to the PlayStation Network.

A Spanish hacker named Bakke has come up with a way to access the PSN even when you're on a lower PS3 firmware. You can still browse and buy stuff from the PlayStation Store, play around in Home, and play with your friends online without having to update to 2.70.

Bakke's trick works on Sony PS3s with firmware 2.30 and up. All the instructions and pertinent files are available at the source link. The original page is in Spanish but you can read the translated instructions here.

Thanks to Josha for the tip!

this will only come in handy if someone finds an exploit to run homebrew in a earlier firmware and has been fixed in a new version

but yeah atm its pretty useless unless you wanna run BD java homebrew for some reason :|

as cool as pirating and other homebrew aps are on the psp I can't support it on the ps3. I payed way to much for it to have all of the good games (that we are actually getting now) disappear because people stop buying games in favor of a free ISO. Just update your system already. There are some pretty good updates that you are missing out on just so you can run a stupid 2D app that would run even better (without restriction) on your pc that is probably 2 feet away from your ps3 and television.

When they find a way to unlock the RSX in Linux on PS3, I'll be interested for sure. I need my OpenGL fix.
